View Full Version : Wil Stan Van Gundy Ever Coach In The NBA Again?

There is no doubt in my mind that SVG is a great coach. I think he is one of the best coaches in the last ten years. I think the same could be said of his brother as well. But there are questions as to how he handled the Dwight situation. When Doug Collins was fired from the Bulls, it was a surprise to many, especially considering he had gotten them closer to an NBA championship in each season he had with the team. Fans and sports writers alike were shocked, but it was reported that other coaches reached out to Collins and told him to essentially keep his mouth shut, because while many viewed his firing as unjustified, owners would be unlikely to hire a coach that spoke out against one of their fellow owners. Collins was uncharacteristically quiet that offseason. SVG on the other hand was rather vocal, not so much after the firing, but before it. He had, according to him, been informed by ownership that Dwight requested he be fired. I expect that he was told this in confidence, but it would seem he broke that confidence by bring the issue out to the press and adding awkwardness to an already tense situation. Dwight went off with his back shortly there after and would not return to play for hte Magic. I think we all know that Dwight was gone by this point regardless of whether or not the team hired or fired SVG, but I think the fact that SVG violated a confidence placed in him by ownership is going to be a major roadblock to him ever working as a head coach in the NBA again, regardless of the fact that he is one of the best at what he does.

So, do any of you think SVG will be finding work in the NBA again as a head coach? Or did he shoot himself in the foot by making the Dwightmare worse than it already was?

And, on a side note, will JVG ever been working as a head coach again? I thought he would have been perfect for LAL (though obviously they would not have hired him since JVG had taken his brother's side on the Dwight/SVG situation, but in terms of how he coaches, he would have been perfect for LAL). Is JVG just being picky? Or does he not want to coach again? Or do no teams want him?

Yes. I think his name got tossed around for a second for the Lakets job (oh, the irony). Whenever Del Negro gets canned, I could see SVG replacing him and installing some structure.

I want him coaching the Nets. The dude flat out wins wherever he goes. He may piss players off but he gets them to buy in.

Of course he can.

It just won't be the Magic or any team Dwight is on.

Will it be This season? Who knows... but he sure isn't a slouch when it comes to coaching and that's what matters the most for most owners.

I thought he would have made a decent coach for the Golden State Warriors, to be honest.

Pretty sure ESPN/NBA/ABC screwed him out of that job.
