I remember how the whole world (including me) thought they were stupid for the moves they made

Trading Gasol for NOTHING (at the time)
Trading Love for OJ Mayo
Drafting Hasheem Thabeet with the 2nd overall

In reality, that Gasol trade gave them Marc Gasol and room to sign Randolph & Tony Allen
They traded Love & drafted Thabeet but they now have one of the best frontcourts in the NBA so you can't really hate them that much for it.

Back then we thought all of these moves were stupid but they end up with a top team in the West... Much respect

Also the Rudy Gay for Shane Battier trade was a steal.

But they are not stupid just average.

^^^That was a toss up... Rockets needed Battier & Memphis needed a scorer... It was always pretty even to me

its not even at all. Rudy gay is a good 2 option on a contending team, battier is just a role player.

Not really those were some pretty stupid moves, the development of Gay, Gasol, and Conley is what has made them so good. Randolph was a great fit in Memphis. If anyone deserves credit is Lionel Hollins and his coaching staff for developing these guys into great players.

At the time, the Battier trade was good. He was a piece that Houston really needed, but obviously Tmac messed everything up. Rudy Gay + Tmac wasn't gonna work when Houston was in win now mode.

How were they in "win now mode"? Yao and McGrady were both like 26 years old.
Battier trade was terrible.

edit: Memphis also got Stromile Swift in the deal... who was serviceable...

All those moves are still terrible but it just shows that you can put a winner on the floor despite terrible mistakes.

Pity Psd deletes threads/posts after a while.
Or you could read it from me in my posts on trade day.

I mean Marc was in the middle of his MVP season in spain.

Other Mvp Winners of spanish league?

Petrovic
Sabonis
Pau
Scola

I mean, the hints were there.

You will never convince me the Grizzlies came out ok of the Pau trade.

They'd be ridiculously good with Kevin Love...holy hell that'd be a scary team.

Because management knew they didn't have much time, its why Tmac left Orlando.

You obviously didn't see how bad Stro was from that point on.

He was a dominant role player while Gay was an average scorer until recently

I'm going to go extremely far out on the limb here. I think the Grizzlies would be worse and love would never have bloomed the same way had he stayed in Memphis. Zachs gritty in your face style of play is a better compliment to Marc. Obviously Kevin Love is a great player but they don't need another guy to stretch the floor from the post.

Love developed behind Al J. And every team could use additional spacing, particularly when they have been as poor from deep as the griz have so I don't get your post at all

Um... yeah, can't forgive them for trading Love away for Mayo. That was awful! lol

And Thabeet, I forgive them for, teams always draft big, but in hindsight, drafting him over Harden and Evans and Curry was a mistake. This team would be SO awesome with:

C:Gasol
PF: Love
SF: Gay
SG: Harden
PG: Whoever the fawk you want to throw in there.

How? Battier is way past his prime and he is now a role player. Rudy has yet to reach his prime and still has a lot years left in the league as a good 2-3rd option if he can stay healthy.
