View Full Version : NBA Power Rankings: Spurs on Top

The season's first change at the top of ESPN.com's weekly NBA Power Rankings sees the defending champs from Miami taking a two-spot drop.

LeBron James' Heat are looking up at the San Antonio Spurs as well as the NBA's only remaining unbeaten team -- indeed, still the New York Knicks -- after the Heat were routed on the road for the second time this month Sunday night in Memphis.

There's certainly no shame in losing to the Grizzlies, who just climbed into the top five themselves in the so-called "human" rankings, but the Spurs and Knicks have vaulted into the top two slots. Which makes for some interesting showdowns this week with San Antonio poised to visit the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night and then play host to the Knicks on Thursday night.

In other notable upward moves, Denver (No. 22 to No. 8) and Philadelphia (No. 18 to No. 9) made the biggest leaps, with the L.A. Clippers (No. 5 to No. 4) and Oklahoma City (No. 7 to No. 6) rising slightly and the Lakers -- after winning a couple of games and hiring new coach Mike D'Antoni -- inching back into the top 10. Among the steepest falls: Milwaukee dropped from No. 4 to a more fitting No. 14, while Indiana sank from No. 9 to No. 15.

The rankings are compiled with ever-helpful dishing from ESPN Stats & Info and the Elias Sports Bureau. Click here to rank the teams yourself.

god i cant wait till the knicks shooters regress to the mean. so sick of them being overrated.

They are getting a combined 6.5 made threes per game at ridiculous percentage from JR Smith, Jason Kidd and Ronnie Brewer, all of whom dont shot high percentages at all from 3, let alone near 55% from 3.

Stop overrating your team and wait till the numbers even out.

As a Spurs fan, I have a distaste for the The Knicks (and their overzealous fan reactions).

That said, Knicks should've been on top. Only unbeaten squad and killer efficient now with Melo at the four.

They are overrated for being ranked 2nd? Being the only undefeated team left and beating Miami, Philly twice, and Dallas who all have a combine record of 13-3 when not playing NY?

Hate much? It's a power ranking. They aren't even Number 1. No one is overrating them.

It's not future power rankings, it's current rankings. As of right this second, i do think there are 9 teams better than them.

So, hypothetically speaking, if every team stepped out on the court tonight, you'd think there would be 10 teams playing that you'd say are better than them right now?

Right now, at this very second, they're a top 10 team. That's what I believe, and I think it's crazy not to.

I don't buy it. Yeah, they have a sub .500 record, they started off slow, but I'm still CERTAIN they are a top 10 team. If all we were basing this on is records, well, that's what standings are for...

Spurs schedule is about to get tough this month... Including a 5 game in 6 or 7 nights with the last game against Miami later in the month.

This week is against Lakers, Knicks, and Nuggets. I'm kinda hoping NY is still undefeated come Thursday ;)

In 2011 the Knicks were back to a defensive team

its called power rankings, not standing rankings.

The coach was clearly most of the problem. They're undefeated since he was fired, two straight 20+ pt victory blowouts, and now improving and starting to learn to play together. Not to mention, the new coach hasnt even arrived yet...

Oh and Nash returns in a week. Dwight's starting to show flashes of the real dwight, he's coming along and shaking off that rust.

They will be fine.

In fairness those wins were against the Kings and the Pistons :) I think they win those even with Brown on the sidelines, but do agree they will continue to improve.

True but that all has had to have been taken in context of where we are coming from and who is saying "we're back". I will say 2010 we were happy to be semi relevant and make the playoffs after a decade of embarrassment. Last year was extremely disappointing and we made lots of excuses but it should have been a great year but wasn't for various reasons.

I don't believe that the Knicks were really back until this year because of Woodson - sorry Laker fans (maybe Mike will be different for you) but D'Antoni and his no defense wasn't going to win in NY where defense and toughness has been who the Knicks are through all the good times. This is where the Knicks are back because they finally play on both sides of the ball again. We'll see how much but I would say to those that haven't had a chance to catch a Knicks game this year they aren't overrated at this point and it isn't just the shots they have been hitting - it is the defense, ball movement, and smart play that is leading us (none of which has been said since about 2001). I think being excited is completely justify and while power rankings in the first week mean about less than nothing it is exciting for us and it has been a brand of basketball that is more reminiscent of the early 90s which were the teams I loved so yea we will say we're back. Should be a fun year in the NBA again.

If they're gonna do these power rankings, why don't they utilize some sort of tangible data instead of just going by arbitrary standards?

Power rankings should be based on team efficiency, period.

The Knicks are currently first in the league in offensive efficiency as well as defensive efficiency, and that's with playing two elite offensive squads (Miami and Dallas) as well as elite defensive teams like Philly.

Do the math!!!

Also, Knicks are back!!111!!
