@jadande

Source confirms the same to me RT @Mike_Bresnahan: Source: Mike D'Antoni will be the next coach of the Lakers. Not Phil Jackson

Lakers won't have D'Antoni in place till later in the week; he's awaiting medical clearance post-knee surgery.

Kobe made it clear he wanted Phil, but said after game tonight that he let Lakers know he was fine with D'Antoni.

@ESPNSteinLine

Says one source of LA Times report that Mike D'Antoni will coach Lakers: "Yes ... just happened."

Honestly, I love the move for the Lakers. I realize its not Phil but its a great second option if true. If they can pick up on the defensive end they'll be right back where they were projected.

Kobe today said that Dantoni would be a great coach for them. Understandable if Phil was asking for increased control + travel restrictions.

The travel restrictions are probably what killed it. If he isn't on the road consistently, and say he does go on the road and gets tired (like we saw in his final year), it does indeed affect his coaching... still better than Dantoni by a large margin, but Dantoni >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Brown

I understand the disappointment of not re-hiring Phil, but from both this season and the immediate future I think this was a good hire.

Phil was more then likely coming on a 1 year deal, who knows really, and his demands were incredibly high.

A 4 year deal with D'Antoni could mean some coaching stability and someone who will maximize the offensive talent on the roster.

I'm completely fine with it.

D'Antoni's style hasn't always been "successful" but he's now got arguably the best defensive player in the league to anchor around his frantic-uptempo offense.

Don't count him out completely.

Now Nash is going to have the ability/control to really elevate Pau/D12.

This could be an awesome offense to watch.

Now to find some consistent outside shooting which could be the kryptonite to it all.

I agree. The defense will not be a problem at all when Dwight gets fully healthy, and the offensive changes should be rather easy to implement, especially given Mike's long-standing relationships with Kobe and Nash, which should allow him to avoid the mess that happened in New York (rival factions tearing the team apart).

I actually like this hire quite a bit.

I Did grow tired of Phil and how he lost his fire. He was always quiet at the end of his tenure and did not see the desire to win. The only thing that was great about Phil was his ability to get the best out of his superstar players.

You're not going to win anything with relying the whole defence on Howard.

I never said the Lakers would "rely the whole defence on Howard" but he makes a bigger impact on the defensive end than any of the players Mike D'Antoni has ever coached, with the exception of Tyson Chandler.

Saying things like the Lakers will allow 100+ every night is absurd by the way. The Lakers have assistant coaches assigned to the defensive side of the ball, Chuck Person in particular. D'Antoni will hopefully improve the offense which has looked better since Mike Brown was shown the door, but he will not be in charge of the defensive end and instead will defer to his staff (Mike Woodson ring a bell).

Its a 7 second offence, hence more possessions per night for the opposition.

100+ will most likely be scored against a night, perhaps the biggest misconception with D'Antoni is that this is perceived as a bad thing.

It doesnt mean the defence is bad, its just that more shots will be put up by both teams, doesnt matter what the defensive coach does.

Doesn't matter, D'Antoni's defensive game plans suck! Unless you guys are planning on having another coach run the defense (like he did in NY with Goodson but problem then was that he didn't have Nash) the Lakers will be bad defensively IMO.

Time will tell. I think the Suns would have beat San Antonio the year Amare and Diaw were suspended. That was just ridiculous imo and they would have made it to the Finals and won. I kind of like the hire because Phil was a short term solution and did not really coach the last year or two.

I blame this on Phil, he was asking for everything in the world.

- Say in front office decisions
- Travel Restrictions
- Lots and lots of dough.

The only one of those that may have been too much is travel restrictions. The others were perfectly reasonable.

Yep. Last years Knicks were top 10 in the league all season defensively. They improved after Woodson took over but it wasn't like night and day.

Its also a myth that D'antoni breeds poor defensive teams.. Average to mediocre, yeah, maybe. But nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. Watch this be a top 5 defensive team or something... I think they will be top 10 with their eyes closed. SVG attributes D'antoni's defensive success or lackthereof to a lack of defensive players. I honestly think there is some merit to that. And regardless some of those Phoenix teams were top half defensive teams.

Exactly, i don't even think Kobe wants to iso anymore. He's to damn old. Now its time to put his cardiovascular to work and get some open jumpers. Dwight has never seen so many open dunks to his life and Nash continues to put up elite passing numbers. Its a wrap.

Also, SO WHAT if D'antoni isn't the best defensive coach. It isn't like he's the worst, AND YOU HAVE DWIGHT IN THE PAINT.

Dwight might bust a nut on the court w/ the amount of pick n' roll dunks he's going to get.

Lakers have a chance to be best offense ever if players buy into more ball sharing and faster tempo. Suns were never worse than 14th or 15th in defensive efficiency and didn't have defensive talent Lakers do so stop worrying. Great hire.

the fact is they play D'Antoni's offense in the olympics. Just his offensive sets. Yes I know about the 3's running gag. That's not all his system is. The 3's are off drive and kicks. The pick n' roll is used to make the PG the main offensive guy or the PF or C. The wings have the license to fire away when the ball gets to them.

Dantoni isn't known for defense but he has never played with a perennial DOP like Dwight. I think this will work out great. The only thing that this proves is Buss does what he wants lol. Kobe didn't sway him maybe 5 years ago but he stood pat. Especially with the ludicrous demands Phil had.

That Nash-Dwight pick n roll will be as deadly as the Nash-Amare in Phx

It will need to be changed some as amare did/could shoot the jumper. Howard can't even hit rim with a jumper.

Eh, the knicks never bring out the best in players and the Lakers USUALLY do. I don't think it's too much of a coincidence that Trevor Ariza and Jordan Hill from the Knicks all of a sudden became really good with the Lakers. And then players to the Knicks regress (Amare, Melo, Dantoni, Zach Randolph, etc.).

So maybe all of a sudden Mike Dantoni's system shines here. Never won a championship? Well there's a first time for everything.

Phil didn't ask for the moon. All he asked for was HIS market value. He's got 11 rings and can almost handpick which job he wants that's available......remember the Lakers need him, he doesn't need the Lakers.

I don't think price is what killed it. I think the travel plans and how much power he wanted did. Did he want to be like Pat Riley was with the Heat?

They need more shooters if they are gonna run Mike D's system. I really disliked him as Knicks coach, but he never really got a roster that suited his system. Nash, and Howard will be good for it, but I don't really see Kobe or Gasol being good fits for his system. If he can adapt his system, and be open minded he could really succeed, but if he doesn't make adjustments, and is stubborn it could be a disaster. Should be very interesting.

Lakers now become a better version of the Nuggets: very good in the regular season, lots of points and excitement......fail in the playoffs due to lack of defense.

I dont think so to be honest, Nash is older and I dont think DH is a better Pick and Roll player than Amare once was, it will be good though.

Nash is older and you don't think Dwight is a better pick n' roll than Stat? If Nash were a Knicks PG does this also apply?

To be fair, the Knicks trade away all their young players. It isn't really about bringing out the best because the Knicks don't even give it a chance. Ariza was a great steal his rookie season and traded before anything materialized. Ironically, Jordan Hill didn't even play under D'antoni and was traded to Houston for cap space and Jared Jeffries. No joke.

Kids are just haters and act like they don't like watching D'antoni teams, but people forget, outside of Linsanity, the man hasn't had a decent PG in a half decade. Thats New York management fault.

Mike D is like that old girlfriend that you dated. You really liked her but she just wasn't right for you. I wish Coach D'Antoni much success in LA. Perhaps with Nash at the helm you will do better there than you did in NY. And just to show you there are no hard feelings, I will gladly trade Amare to you for Gasol. It would hurt me to do so, but I really want you to succeed. Call me...

Not surprised at all with the hiring.

Nash has proven chemistry with D'Antoni. Kobe has been coached by D'Antoni with Team USA for years, not to mention D'Antoni is one of his childhood idols. Dwight gets to shine as a scorer in PnR's, as does Gasol.

D'Antoni will do fine with Dwight and Gasol in the paint. He's already stated in interviews that he's perfectly fine with getting a defensive co-ordinator ala Woodson if he got the job.

The 3 year + 1 year Team Option makes sense. He's around for the length of the Nash contract.

And Kobe is NOT Melo. Kobe is one of the most self-motivated players on the planet, and he's played against Nash often enough to know how effective D'Antoni's system is when done properly.

It's going to be an interesting season...
