View Full Version : What happened to Jonny Flynn?

The former number 6 overall pick just signed to play with Melbourne Tigers of the Australian basketball league, which is shocking in a sense seeing as how bad the players are over here and how little he will be making seeing as team salaires are capped at 1 million.

A pretty good rookie campaign had him averaging 14 points and 4 assists in only 28 minutes of play, he was also pretty good at syracruse from what I can remember.

What happened?

He was a bust from the beginning, just simply not nba material.

His position is the toughest to maintain a job in, especially when he doesn't excel at anything pg related.

they completely missed out on Curry that year.

Well at least Rickey Rubio will be a stud. 2 for 1 in the draft isnt bad.

EVERY TEAM

If Kahn didn't have a PG fetish, Flynn would've fallen to the Knicks. His career might be a lot better. D'antoni gets production out of worse combo guards.

He was a terrible draft pick.

Didn't he go ahead of Steph Curry???

I scratched my head when it happened and I still do to this day

Just about any team you look at has made a large number of "bad picks." No one has a crystal ball and the teams who have been in the lottery most recently are generally the ones we remember being the worst.

Let's not forget that Seattle/OKC drafted Robert Swift 12th in '04, Petro 25th in '05, Sene 10th in '06 and Cole Aldrich 11th in '10 before finally trading for Kendrick Perkins to fill the center spot. It took them 7 years an 4 wasted picks to finally fill a position comfortably, but no one remembers that. People just remember Durant (supreme luck), Westbrook and Ibaka (deep draft) and Harden.

Ricky Rubio went 5th which made people in Minnesota scratch their heads when Jonny Flynn was taken 6th (instead of DeRozan).

He wasn't even that good at Cuse. Idk, that was a weird pick by Minnesota.

Kahn with no coach, on his 3rd week on the job, with minimal basketball knowledge. Not defending the pick at all, just stating how it happened. We knew Rubio wasn't coming for a year or two, but I was very, very surprised with the pick.

Lol you watch he will probably be crazy good in the NBL. We have such a crap league out here. Our MVP of the season cant even get a spot in the NBA.

That SOB sure could dunk though. Any team would be lucky to have him on their summer league team.

Oh yes, that draft. The draft where Minny drafted 4 PGs? and an undersied SG... hmm....

Why the T-Wolves would draft Rubio and Flynn, one right after the other, and the pick up Lawson and then Nick Calathes (who was also a PG) is beyond me.

I know they didn't expect Rubio to come over from Europe that season, so they needed a PG, I guess.

Why is Flynn not in the NBA? He did have a pretty good rookie year, despite his low FG% (which was due in part to the fact he shot a lot of three, which he actually did well in his rookie year). But at the end of the day, PGs are supposed to do three things: defend the opposing PG (Flynn was average at this), pass the ball without turning it over( Flynn couldn't manage this) and have a decent jumper or be able to drive (Flynn didn't have a jumper, but I don't know about his drive).

Flynn caused a lot of turnovers and shot at a low percentage. That is just not going to work out in the NBA.

I understand the T-Wolves traded Lawson likely because he wasn't ranked as high coming out of college and he is a little undersized (they gave him up in a trade to Denver, then gave up that pick to Portland for a player they waved so they essentially gave LAwson away for nothing). Still, drafting 4 PGs in one draft seems crazy.

He was so overrated in 2k12, he would drop 25-30 points on me each time I would play against him

He had a pretty decent rookie season actually, but it all went downhill from there. I wish he was better because the Wolves could sure use him right now with Barea going down.

Are people expecting a lot more success from Waiters? I'm not. Flynn was a better shooter and passer.

Flynn was a beast in college so what are you talking about? He got injured in that tourny game agains Ohio St. by Blake Griffin and was never the same since. A hip injury is no joke. I seen that boy light up the dome many a night. He was the highest rated pg in college hoop his last year, thats why he went #6.

Flynn was awesome at Syracuse and had a decent run in Minny before he got that injury...bounced around a few teams but never could make his way back. I hope he gets healthy soon however because he is still very young what 23/24 he can come back and perform in this league for sure as a back up PG.

The only laugher from that Wolves draft is Flynn, as I recall Lawson and Calathes were picked for the teams they ended up on and NOT PICKED FOR the Wolves roster.

"Flynn sure does have a great smile, though!!!" I can't tell you how much I hated hearing that about him. His damn smile isn't getting him buckets, finding the open man and D'ing up anyone.
