View Full Version : Why did Carmelo stop dunking?

He's 6'8, I'm sure we would all say he his gifted athletically, so why does he not slam it home like he used to? I think your team/fans need dunks for momentum but he seems to be boycotting it. Is it a precaution to not get injured or something? C'mon Melo we miss this...

Because he's trying to lose games. Knicks get #1 overall draft pick imo :D

He doesn't run many fast breaks, and thrives for contact. So he isnt gonna jump that high with contact.

Bruno
11-04-2012, 03:47 PM
he's getting close to 30. he could be adapting his game to get ready for a drop off in athleticism. which is smart.

he doesn't want to embarrass himself and get rim stuffed.

The Melo haters are really grasping for straws huh? I mean they can't bash him right now, so you talk about this nonsense. Comical. What's next after he gets a couple of dunks, he doesn't get enough left-handed lay ups?

knicks=love
11-04-2012, 03:57 PM
He still dunks though. Not today. But yah who cares how he scores.

if he had 10 opportunities to dunk, he'd dunk it maybe 3 times. that's nearly not as much as he used to.

KnickaBocka.44
11-04-2012, 03:57 PM
you obviously didn't watch the game today

He didnt really have any opportunities other than that break right before halftime and I think he was just more concerned with getting the bucket in before the buzzer than posterizing someone.

because he looks for contact iz hard to do that and dunk and he is not that athletic to begin with alittle above avg he only dunks with a head of steam

Didn't he hurt his hand on a dunk before? Not sure.

Its not just Melo, its Bron, Wade, Kobe etc.... Iggy prolly too since hes the one whos noticing when players start cooling it on the dunks

Why dunk when a layup is even more effortless and has less risk of block/foul/injury?

Seriously. Why be flashy? You play efficient ball to win. Not flashy ball.

LongIslandIcedZ
11-04-2012, 04:23 PM
He doesnt blow by guys in the open court like Lebron. He works from the post and bullies people around and tries to draw contact. His game doesnt really lead to many dunking situations.

Glen Davis

It's probably for the best anyways considering he won't have his athleticism forever. He'll probably one of the players who age well and can still play at a high level as he gets older.

Cromedome
11-04-2012, 04:27 PM
He'll dunk the ball when it counts.

meloman1592
11-04-2012, 04:27 PM
1...he's not super athletic, just above average
2...it's the same damn 2 points!!!
3...he's probably getting used to 30+ age life

meloman1592

and he dunked on joel anthony in the playoffs last year if i remember correctly

Most importantly. He doesn't see the point of it except making the highlight reel. And getting close to 30 and watching Lebron hoist up that trophy, he realizes that individual stats pail in comparison to the rock

I prefer the layup! I want to see him playing well for another 5 years at least.

jimm120
11-04-2012, 04:35 PM
1: I think it might be because he's gotten wrist injuries from dunking

2: And this is the most important, imo. He LIKES CONTROL. When he's in the air, he loves to be able to control the ball at all times. In dunks, once you reach a certain point, you can't go back.

I HAVE noticed that he he barely dunks. I LOVES layups. But I think its because of what i pointed out above, specifically #2. He prefers the layup since he'll more easily adjust

thats fine. but if you watched the fame today you would know that Melo is playing tough d, hustling all over and is not playing selfish ball at all.

1...he's not super athletic, just above average Thats said about Kobe
2...it's the same damn 2 points!!! Same goes for Bron
3...he's probably getting used to 30+ age life Kobe is older and was still getting up last year in season 16.

Look I watch becuase I love the game and to see my favorite team win, and even thoguh its the same two points.....DAMN IT ENTERTAIN MEEE!!!! If you have the ability to dunk it, do it! If your super fast use it! If your strong Bang! ENTERTAIN ME! In the offseason train your body to be able to do whats needed to sustain for a long season and play at a high level.

Im not saying every dunk needs to be i traffic over everyone. What i am saying is every now and than take a risk. On the break do something great to get me out my seat, unless your hurt. Sometimes you can make a basic dunk look great if you do it at full speed. I hate when players slow down to a jog and do a basic two hand. It's a slap in the face to ticket holders.

This isn't the 50's, and 60's. This reason the NBA merged with the ABA is becuase the NBA was losing money to the ABA, becuase fans went to the ABA to be entertained. You cant just take the excitment out the game by holding out on your God given abilities and expect fans to keep coming to see you.

Look I love Melo ability to score off the dribble, in the post, and his catching and shooting, but i would be a lie if i told you that it didnt bother me when he attacks the rim only for contact rather than attacking to demoralize his defender and their team with a nasty, you have no business jumping with me, rim shaking, outer body experience causing, coma inducing, Shawn Kemp pointing dunk.

Kinda like this

When I was at the game on Friday and he was running the fast break with bron trailing I knew how it was going to turn out.

he doenst want his knees to buckle out.

see Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady. That is what happens if you're a scorer and you dunk too much in your hayday.

Melo was never really an outstanding dunker anyway but i do agree the add a good momentum swing

Melo is saving his body unlike Blake Griffin who is going to break his leg off lol. That dude is monstorous reminds me of V.C.'s crazy stuff. But anyways Melo can do a little bit of everything.

HeaTxRipZz

No sense in dunking when you can go for the layup and take it a bit easier on your legs. We can leave the flashiness to JR, Brewer and Shump. Rather real basketball from the stars

Carmelo doesn't waste his energy usually. His dunks are nice though when he pulls them out. If anything he just does that quick dunk where his hands kind of bounce of the rim. Sometimes he clearly has enough hangtime to dunk it, but lays it in anyway.

What the heck are u talking about? Melo is in top form right now. Dunking is great, but can sometimes be over rated. If you lay it up, u get two points. If you dunk it, u get two points. Trust me, he still has it and is a very good athlete.

I thought that was more due to his back issues. He still gets up though on a regular and when hes 100% its gonna get nasty.

Melo still dunks, but he's not gonna be on your daily highlights for dunks. I think he's adapting his game, he's got a lot of miles on those legs. You have to remember he's been in this league since he was 19 and has represented the USA every olympic games since his entry into the NBA. I'm not saying that he's on the decline, but he's definitely smarter than he was when he was 19, so he will care more about being efficient than flashy.
