•Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch hears Rick Ankiel is open to giving pitching another shot. The Cardinals could be among the teams willing to give Ankiel another chance on the mound. Ankiel pitched for the Cardinals from 1999-2004, putting together a strong season as a 20-year-old in 2000. He returned to the big leagues as a hitter in 2007.

Wow if we did give him another shot i'd be open to it. Why not it could turn into gold. He could be a great left handed reliever.

I have always loved Ankiel. I would love to see him sporty number 66 on the mound again.

It would be nuts to see him pitch again. Hey anything to revive your career i guess. I think the guy can do it. He's got got great work ethic and is determined. We all know he has a rocket arm. IE throwing guys out at 3rd from the wall! Good god that was amazing when he threw that one dude out at third a few years back and the guy was just like wtf?!!! I remember that throw like it was yesterday just don't remember the runner, i do remember he was very fast though.

Of course he did it quite a few times though.

I think it would be exciting, a gimmick at the least. Could be some potential in it as a long reliever or lefty specialist. Something interesting he could bring is vs a tam like the phillies, who have several lefties in a row in their line up.
say you wanna bring in Ankiel to face the lefties with 2 outs. because of his great batting ability (for a pitcher anyway) he could come in. Stay in the line up, no double switching and if he has to bat so what?

Or he could even become a new role. The utility pitcher. You could always carry 13 pitchers. You could have Ankiel the LHP/outfielder/pinch hitter. He could be playing the outfield. Come in to pitch and put a guy in the outfield for him. Lots of interesting scenarios

I'm moving to the MLB forum

Was original in Cardinals forum, but he is a pretty neat story and would obviously be available to everybody.

I wish he had never given up pitching.

I don't know what happened to him in that Met series in 2000.

I remember he had some troubles earlier in that NLCS but game 5 is where he really blew up especially that Alfonzo at bat.

There was an interesting article i read about him a few months ago and the video on the bottom of this website shows where it fell apart for him (although i am sure you remember its about 5 minutes in)

http://www.amazinavenue.com/2012/1/30/2756687/lets-go-to-the-videotape-the-ankiel-meltdown

I hope he is able to come back and pitch, regardless of whether he is able to or not his transformation into an everyday player is still a great testament to a player's will.

If he could be an effective lefty reliever.

You could sign he and Micah Owings to platoon as 5th outfielders/pinch hitters, and as lefty/righty relievers paired against each other.

I did it in an OOTP season once, but the team was really bad anyway.
Owings had a better pitching season, Ankiel had a better offensive season, but both were good enough to play ( I was an expansion team in my first season).

I don't know what happened to him in that Met series in 2000.

According to Tony LaRussa (saw in an interview, don't have the comments to quote here)

He said it's because Matheny wasn't catching. Matheny knew how to calm him down. And that this was far from the first time Ankiel had mentally just 'lost it'. But if he had had Matheny catching him, he could always bring him back to earth and he would be able to fix the problem that game.

but because the problem didn't get fixed that game, his confidence kept going down further and further and eventually he was just worthless.

I figured he would go the way of Randy Johnson and Sandy Koufax. Young lefty that is wild, would go back to the minors, figure it out, and by the age of 25 be a dominant force to reckon with.

But he gave up on pitching, and that made this Cards fan sad.

Tony said, if Matheny had been catching him that day, he is 'confident' Ankiel would still be pitching to this day.

He is talking about the May 6th, 2008 game in Colorado where he gunned two Rockies runners out at third on perfect strikes in the air from the wall.

I would share the viedo, but MLB's servers says it's down currently.

I think Ankiel can come back in some capacity and possibly be a Micah Owings type player, only better. I had no doubt Ankiel could come back as an OFer and have no doubt he can still pitch.

Crazier things have happened in baseball. Jason Isringhausen came back. Jason Motte was a minor league catcher before becoming one of the NL's top closers. Why not see what happens with Ankiel? If he can regain 1/10th stuff he had before he lost his controll, he'd be pretty darn good.

Whenever I look at Ankiel's pitching numbers, old videos of him etc.

I think of what the Cardinals rotation could have looked like.

Wainwright
Carpenter
Haren
Ankiel
Throw in whoever, it doesn't matter.

The what if's of Ankiels career will forever haunt me as a Cards fan. My God he was fun to watch when he was just 19

No doubt.

I would love to see Ankiel in a Cardinal uniform again. I don't even care if its a gimmick or not. I like him and love the story. Always seemed to be a great guy. Wish nothing but the very best for him and his career. Hell, he could play for the Reds, Cubs or Bo Sox and I'd still cheer for him.

Think about the pitching matchups that would have happened w Chicago.
Prior vs Waino
Wood vs Carp
Dempster vs Haren
Zambrano vs Ankiel (head case matchup)

You can also say the same with Kyle, if he hadn't died.

I often think the same about the Angels and Adenhart.

Also, if he does make it back again, that pretty much guarantees Lou Diamond Phillips will be playing him in The Rick Ankiel Story, right?

It would be interesting to see if Ankiel (actually pronounced An-Kee-ell) could make a comeback as a pitcher.
