View Full Version : Who was the first player(s) to really tune you in to the NBA?

There is a lot of silliness going on, so I thought I would try to touch on the root of what really made us fall in love with the NBA. What players really began to make you a fan of the NBA?

Mine:

Hakeem: My dad started us boys on the Rockets, back when Hakeem was the man. I would go play on my goal at home, and practice the Dream Shake. Had his toys, posters, cards, and everything else I could get my hands on. Odd as it sounds, watching the Rockets, I always felt a sense of safety when the ball was in his hands. I had a child-like trust that he would always come through.

MJ and Shaq: Kids are frontrunners;)

Larry Bird- Loved his McDonalds commercial with MJ, and thought he was the man.

Dominique Wilkins- He was just ridiculously exciting.

What about you guys??

It was KG. I think it was NBA Live 2000, where Duncan was on the cover. I didn't watch a single game back then, being in Asia. There was this video before going into the game where they had various highlights of the stars back then and then there was KG, who was a special player in my eyes back then as he is to me now.

Really was not one player for me. Watched first Blazer game 95/96 season and started watching basketball with intent to learn about it the next day. December 19th 1995 we lost to the Spurs. Suppose if going to pick a player from that year it would be Rod. Been watching and studying basketball ever since.

I love the memories you can create and share through basketball! I still remember celebtrating the Rockets game 7 win to win the championship. The reason we are all here is because we love bball and watch the NBA, and I think that gets lost in homerism, trolling, sarcasm, and keyboard warrior-ism sometimes. All that stuff is fine and good, but it cool to read how some of the sparks of fandom started amongst the posters here!

T-Mac. The first game I watched was the Rockets vs Lakers in Houston. I thought the match ups were the most interesting part. McGrady on Kobe and Yao on Shaq. But yeah T-Mac for sure.

When I started watching & playing basketball Miami had the likes of Steve Smith, Rony Seikaly and Glen Rice, which then later turned into Tim Hardaway & Alonzo Mourning.

Favourite non-HEAT players were David Robinson, Grant Hill and Shawn Kemp's dunking. I liked ""Run-T.M.C." as well, and Shaq when he first came into the league (hopped off that wagon when popularity got to his head though).

When I first started watching, it was actually Kobe. It was after Shaq was traded and I was a very casual fan. Kobe's 81, and 35 ppg season made me love him at the time.

But I took a break for a few years and came back to watching in 08, this time as a serious fan of the nearby Knicks. There was no player that drew me in then, since my favorite team was only looking for cap space.

I'd have to say my first memory of watching basketball is watching the bad boy Pistons win back to back titles. I liked everyone on the team accept Laimbeer, even though i respect his game. I loved how that team was physical, played like they were in a gang, and got into the opposing teams heads. This team really peaked for those 2 years and a lot of people forget how good they were when discussing teams from 80-90's period.

The second team I began to follow were the Payton/Kemp Sonics. Always some good memories of Sir Charles back then as well.

I wouldn't say any player tuned me in to the NBA.

I was a basketball player as a kid and naturally I started watching my hometown team (the timberwolves). Being a basketball player usually makes you a basketball fan.

If I had to pick a player it would probably be Kevin Garnett just because when I was growing up as a middle schooler and high schooler KG was the ****ing man on the Wolves.

I had just finished high school and had some time on my hands so caught some bulls games on wgn. Never watched the NBA before, but watching MJ and the bulls got me hooked. I got into all sports at once when I joined the grade 9 football team and my new circle of friends were die hards. Vince Carter drew me right into basketball. The potential that I thought he and Bosh had made basketball my favourite sport from the get go. Didn't last long though before VC started acting like a baby and after he left Bosh was such a *****. Being that I'm from close to Toronto and I'm Italian, Bargnani is my clear favourite and I probably would be more of a football guy without him. He'll put the league on notice this year.

It was the same for me. I can even remember the very first Rockets game I ever sat down and watched. It was Game 6 of the 93-94 Finals (not the OJ game, which was Game 5), when the Rockets came back to tie up the series. Although my dad was always a sports fan, I didn't really care much until then. But my whole family was up that night watching, and Hakeem seemed like this supernatural superhero who could do anything.

I've only owned two jerseys in my life and one of them was an Hakeem jersey that I wore religiously until it barely fit. I had photos and posters of him all over my room and I also used to practice the Dream Shake in my backyard. I don't think I ever idolized a player quite like I idolized him, and he was the main reason I became a hardcore sports fanatic.

The first NBA game I watched on TV was the debut of LeBron James. Since then I learned the existence of NBA. (I was like 7 years old back then) Since then, started to like basketball but only because I purchased NBA live 03. I use to like the Lakers bec they are the 2 teams to be chosen first (along with Nets).

The game made me love my Lakers and especially Shaq who was dominant both in the game and in the real life. From then on, I became a Lakers fan and a Shaq fan. I used to hate Kobe since I thought he forced Shaq out but I learned to like the guy since I am a Lakers fan and has been my favorite player ever.

It is really eye opening to see how popular VC is on this thread. When a player is im that in-between stage of past-their-prime and retirement, you take for granted how good they were, since you still see them in NBA games. If that makes any sense. I will never forget that team USA dunk, though. He was an exciting player, who might even be underrated skill-wise for his prime.

Allen Iverson for me, too. The first game I can remember watching (even though I watched a few before) was game 1 of the 2001 finals. I was in 7th grade at the time and hadn't given basketball a chance, but that game made me an Iverson fan (and Sixers fan at the time) and a Laker hater. Barkley, fat dude who could dribble like a guard and dunk, and who could dominate a basketball game.

I use to like how he would snatch a defensive board, dribble the length of the court and throw down a thunderous dunk that brought the house down; he was unstoppable!

After growing up in an area where no NBA team was really near, I had casually watched the Blazers some when I moved to Oregon. But one day (mid 80s) I was running thru a Portland mall, late to meet my g/f, when I came around a corner and LITERALLY ran into Clyde the Glide and his wife (well, literally only Clyde). I ended up talking with them for like 10 minutes, further p'in' my g/f off, but I didn't care. Clyde is one class guy.

For the record, my relationship with the g/f lasted about another month....my relationship with the Blazers is ongoing :p

Pretty obvious answer, but Michael Jeffrey Jordan. Born in 1989, so the earliest of Jordan's greatness is slightly lost on me, but I remember watching his last three titles as a kid and just being in awe. To this day, I still thank my father for being so into sports and watching them with me at a young age. Anyone who didn't get to see Jordan play during those years really lost out on watching greatness.

My dad was a Portland Trail Blazers fan so I remember Clyde Drexler, Clifford Robinson, Brandon Duckworth and Terry Porter quite vivedly. And my older brother liked the Pistons with Dumars, Isiah, Rodman and Lambeer. But for some reason I really liked David Robinson. He was my guy growing up when I was younger.

When the NBA came to Toronto though it was all about Mighty Mouse and then Vinsanity. I just wish McGrady would have stuck around we would have had the most exciting team of all time I would think. Junk-Yard-Dogg and Mo P were prolly my two all time favourite role players.

Unfortunately there hasn't been anything to cheer about in T.O. since VC left : (

My very 1st NBA game just happened to be game 4 of the 87 Finals with Lakers @ Celtics, it was on television at our house and I was kind of curious to why my uncle and aunt was over yelling and screaming at the television. I was just a little guy then, I sat down and watched Magic Johnson hit the baby sky hook to win the game and it just stuck with me...from then on he became the player that got me into watching the NBA.

Jordan and the Bad Boys Pistons initially, then I stopped watching for a while but when I got back into it, Yao Ming and the 04 Champion Pistons.

Growing up in NW Indiana (20 minutes from Chicago) and Michigan I've grown up a diehard Pistons/Bulls fan. The players that got me hooked would be the whole bad boy pistons and obviously Jordan and Pippen. Always had alot of love and respect for Hakeem, Ewing, Stockton, Malone, Kemp, Payton...just too many guys to name. I've always loved the NBA.

Tim Duncan and Shaq but then once Shaq won it all I found out more about the Celtics Lakers rivalry. I started to like Shaq again after he got traded to Miami. Tim Duncan is just so awesome.
