View Full Version : Knicks & Nets Season Opener In Jeopardy

10-30-2012, 03:39 PM
As the city tries to recover from the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the fate of Thursday's scheduled season opener between the Nets and Knicks in Brooklyn is up in the air.

NBA spokesman Tim Frank tweeted this about the league schedule Tuesday morning: "For the many asking: Tonight's NBA games will be played. We are still assessing the situation with regards to the rest of the week."

Whether Thursday's game can go off as scheduled could depend largely on whether or not the city's subway lines can begin to be restored by then.

MTA officials said it could take anywhere from 14 hours to four days just to clear the water from flooded subway lines, which would then need to be assessed for repairs. The Smashing Pumpkins concert scheduled for Wednesday at the Barclay's Center was cancelled.

The Nets canceled a planned practice Tuesday, with no word yet as to whether they will be able to return to the practice court Wednesday.

If it takes 4-5 days like reported to get the subway systems running, the Knicks & Nets may not play at all until next week.

Would be a shame really. Really wanted to see Knicks-Nets and then Heat-Knicks on Friday

The people in that area shouldn't even care about this game right now.

I'll be bummed for sure, but there are more important things in life than a basketball game.

I suppose I got lucky. The storm didn't knock out my power, and I could barely tell it was raining out. Unfortunately it is next to impossible to get to the Barclays Center with no Subways

10-30-2012, 04:10 PM
Was MSG damaged at all? I know this game will be played at Barclays but I was jw

10-30-2012, 04:12 PM
MSG was fine, so was the stock exchange - they are not sure on how fast they can turn over the subway but I'd imagine they are working rapidly.

Would have been a nice start to the season but I just kinda shrug my shoulders if it doesn't happen - especially under the conditions.

I wonder what is the condition of the Barclays Center.

Move Friday's Game to Miami and switch it with another Game that is in Miami to New York.
\Move Nets/Knicks Game to another city near by like Columbus.

I had no College on Monday and Tuesday because of Hurricane Sandy and because of that I am grateful to the Hurricane. But take away NBA season opener of my fav. team for a week and I get mad.

Manhattan bridge and brooklyn bridge are open, but the FDR Drive is flooded and remained closed from 116th st all the way to lower manhattan. plus there is no parking lot at the Barclay Center. if there is no subway on thursday, no way in hell people will get to the game.

10-30-2012, 06:38 PM
it won't happen, mainly because of transportation.

10-30-2012, 06:48 PM
Cabbies will be making bank on Thursday night :-P

Me too. But safety first.

10-30-2012, 07:06 PM
lucky for the knicks, the storm delayed their 1st loss..

10-30-2012, 07:08 PM
 Funny guy ahead of me. But yeah no way we play this game, Brooklyn and the city took a beating from the strom.

10-30-2012, 08:09 PM
Bloomberg was saying the subways could be 4-5 days to get operational again though individual lines could be sooner.

Con Ed saying up to 10 days to get the power back up for everyone (700k affected).

And NJ... wow. The pictures are crazy.

Just one heck of a mess. Prayers going out to all affected.

10-30-2012, 08:28 PM
the city took a whupping. no way they play, there is no need. Just set it up on another date, and make sure the locals are taken care of first over some stupid sport.

10-30-2012, 09:00 PM
game will be played anyway.

10-30-2012, 09:02 PM
EJ announced game will go on as scheduled. MTA must feel confident the subway will be operational by game time.

10-30-2012, 09:45 PM
Has NBA said anything on it yet?

10-30-2012, 10:00 PM
Yeah. TNT reported that the game is still on.

10-30-2012, 10:00 PM
they said it is to be played as scheduled

10-31-2012, 09:48 AM
Everything below I believe 39th street got hit really hard. A couple of my friends are still stuck in Brooklyn and not able to get back to the Upper East Side.

10-31-2012, 09:56 AM
Shocked, City took a beating, I guess MSG is fine as well? Power keeps going on an off around the city, hope they know what they are doing.

nope, it's just a bunch of grown up morons in their 40s and 50s that want to see this game and could care less about anyone's safety.

duh, they obviously know what're they're doing.

10-31-2012, 12:06 PM
Yeah, I think they could have delayed this game an extra week or 2 (Until the cleanup is complete). I know the teams want to get their season started but safety should be first in everyone's minds.

10-31-2012, 01:21 PM
I'm surprised it's still happening. Who the heck can even make it to the game? The subway is absolutely wrecked and probably won't be operational until next week.

10-31-2012, 01:39 PM
I'm going to guess that a lot of the people who bought tickets to this game are people that would take car service to the arena, so that'll be the same. For everyone else it's a shame. I live right in the area (not hurt bad by the storm) and I'd love to go to the game and snatch up some of the tickets, but I can't pay a 3/4/500% premium that people are selling them for.
