On second thought, this is probably legit.

Stern said he wanted to be the longest tenured commissioner ever... Pete Rozelle ran the NFL from January 1960 to November 1989. By retiring on 2/1/14, he'll have beaten that by two months.

Silver will be better.

That is a legit reason. I don't know how you can just shove that aside. I mean the trade talks got to a serious point where they said "deal done". If he was a good owner and didn't want the trade to happen in the first place, he wouldn't have had let it go that degree.

Even Phil Jackson said a yr before it happened that the commissioner owning an NBA team could serve to be catastrophic for the league. And like always, the Zen Master was right.

David Stern has also interfered with the game of basketball itself. Remember the infamous "synthetic basketball" that was a total fail to begin that 2006-07 season?

Well as far as I know, owners of a team have every right to do that. They put a guy in place to run the team and make trade decisions, and as it was approaching a real deal, those owners realized they were getting fleeced for old players with large contracts. Hence the veto. Honestly, its Lakers fans being beyond butthurt over it. For once somebody stopped a way unfair Lakers trade from going through, and all LA fans threw a fit. Him and the other owners identified a better, more sustainable deal and took it. End of case.

I applaud Mitch for getting them in the position to make such deals and convincing other teams they aren't getting screwed with it, but it has happened a lot and directly impacted championships your team has won.

The synthetic basketball was an utter disaster for sure, but that was rectified pretty quickly. So far your case on why he sucks is lacking.

No, it's basically Stern getting pressurized by the owners because they felt slighted at not getting BRI that they were looking for during the lockout CBA negotiations, so he felt compelled to do this veto in their favor. That letter by Gilbert was just despicable.

I'll just go with my recent gripes...

A comically poor NBA flopping agenda, giving out fines? That's not gonna deter any NBA player that isn't making the league minimum.

A crackdown on pregame handshakes and chest-bumps to "make games run faster" when a better solution would be cutting down on the ridiculous amount of time-outs for TV reasons. But wait, that would cost the league and owners money. Whoops. If they want that many ads, why not just make halftime shows longer?

its a start, and especially if its a repeat offender it will add up. i doubt Stern could go to the PA and say we'll start fining them 50k per flop or suspend them right off the bat and that will fly with them.

and if that doesnt work i'm sure he will increase the penalty

Deal was already done. Chris Paul was on his way to fly out to LAX and Kobe was getting ready to receive him there.

Obviously it was done without final approval of the people who owned the team which included Stern himself. I understand that its a screwy situation having the Commish and other owners temporarily own one team, but that was the reality of the situation. There was no other viable candidate at that time otherwise it would have been bought. I also agree that part of the reason it was done was simply because it was the Lakers and other owners didn't want an already storied franchise with their trade history getting another steal. Where we diverge on the argument though: Like it or not, Stern was part owner and so were the other 30-31 guys that voted to veto the trade. It was well within his/their right and power to protect a small market franchise.

When comparing the packages they ended up getting with what the Lakers sent them, there is absolutely no reason to question why the veto happened.

I agree on the flopping rules. It will do very little other than cause perpetual controversy over calls and a lot of players will be fined for it repeatedly. Unfortunately with the TV time outs, its a reality with all major sports. Do they make boat loads of cash? Sure. But we live in a capitalistic society where the people in charge are going to squeeze every dollar they can out of it. Football is FAR FAR FAR (can't emphasize that enough) with the commercials and game pacing (i.e. commercial break after TD, come back for kick off, followed by another commercial wtf).

Overall those seem like very minor things in the grand scheme of things to me. I'm curious to see what Hawkeye has to say about this whole thing.

Who choses the next commissioner is it the owners or stern???

Stern chooses and the owners vote on his choice. They have already approved Adam Silver, the creepy nerd who is currently dep. commish. I will honestly miss Stern. He made some blunders and sleezy moves, but hes been huge for the NBA.
