Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki underwent arthroscopic surgery on his bothersome right knee Friday, the first operation of his 14-year NBA career.

Nowitzki, 34, said earlier this week that doctors told him the typical timetable to return from such an operation is three to six weeks, which means it's almost certain that he will miss the beginning of the regular season.

3-6 weeks, and we all should know of Dirk's legendary recovery time from injuries. The dude heals like a superhero.

Also, that six weeks is when he can resume on-court activity. So you have to think a while after that.

best course of action for our team. no need to have the knee linger as the season progresses, and it'll give the new guys a chance to establish themselves early.

get well soon dirk!

Yowch.

Another player goes down... Mavs are going to have an uphill battle getting into the playoffs if Dirk misses too many games (not that they were a lock for the playoffs in the first place).

My sympathies Mav fans. Guess we'll see if the rest of the team can hold the fort while he's gone...

Arthroscopic surgery and his game has never been based on his athleticism. Obviously he is getting older and there is some wear but no reason to think he won't be the Dirk we're used to.

Knee surgery was the best option for him despite how much it should affect Dallas. Rather have him healthy for the second half rather than battle the first and be injured worse later. Mavs will have to play well to maintain a .500 record in his absence.

I think the Mavs should trade Dirk and start the rebuilding process...

I say, Boston or the 76ers should try to jump on this.

So we will start the season with out Kevin Love and Dirk playing the beginning of the month?

That means it's Griffin's and Aldridge's time to shine and for Amar'e to attempt a reclaim for a top PF spot early on.

Any reason why Dirk didnt do this after the summer? It reminds me of when Pippen decided to get foot surgery at the start of the 1998 season instead of during the offseason. Obviously it is different because Pipp was pissed at management, but why did Dirk not do this earlier?

No they shouldn't. It's one thing to trade him if you're going to have a pretty solid product on the court, it's another thing to do so if the what you'd get in return isn't good, something I can't really see Philly and/or Boston getting involved in.

They can rebuild after he retires.

Dirk has a no trade clause.

This is for the best.

I think Dirk and Kobester only two guys in the NBA who have it.

Dirk would have to want out. And if he did I would be real sad lol.

The guy has never had surgery in his 14 year career. Whatever discomfort he was having previously (and I don't know when it actually started) he probably thought was just a nagging injury that would go away with enough time/treatment.

Cause it wasn't hurting in the summer....

Your logic makes no sense. When they see Dirks starting to decline then they should trade him. Why in the hell would they want him to retire then rebuild. If you can get pieces to rebuild then you do it.

My point was mainly directed towards the notion that Philly or Boston should be the ones to deal with. They wouldn't have what Dallas would want. I know what you're saying, and I concur, but it's pointless if Philly and Boston were to be the only teams that want in.

Trading him now in the scenario posted by who I was responding to wouldn't do anything but bring out a crappy product, something Mark Cuban sure as hell doesn't want. Besides, Dirk's game will be just fine. He's a shooter, and that doesn't go away with age.

He played his entire career for the team and is aguably the best Mav ever.Plus he signed for less and won you your first championship.

10-19-2012, 08:57 PM
People are acting like its a shooting hand injury or that it's a season ending injury

He will only miss 3-4 weeks of Regular season, that's what 12 games?

Wow. Way to overreact. As long as its not a shooting hand injury Dirk will be fine!

This isn't Blake Griffin or someone that relies on athleticism

Dirk is like Larry Bird. Larry could have played forever if his back hadn't crapped out. When you don't have any speed to lose but stellar bball skills you can hang around for awhile. Dirk will be fine.

OJ Mayo's going to go off to start the season.

OJ Mayo has no excuse not to put up all star numbers. If he doesn't put up numbers we can officially close the book on him and label him a bust. He is a number 1 option on an offensively depleted team.

LTBaByyy
10-20-2012, 02:10 AM
OJ Mayo controls his own destiny!

He put up 20 pts preseason game 1 and 14 pts game 2 so far

Needs to shoot even more, needs to have that Harden/Monta Ellis drive

It's his time, I want 22 pts a game! I mean he did avg 18 pts a game as a rookie so it's not far fetched? :)

Agreed, Dirk has earned the right to retire the greatest Mavs of all time..he will never be traded..few players have earned that..Duncan, Kobe, Wade..those are the only other ones IMO..
