View Full Version : If you had to pick a power forward to shut down the opponent....

which 5 in ranking order would you pick? I'm talking all time spanning the past 3 decades or more. Who are the most athletic? Who's capable of doing that yet being a dominant scorer on the offensive end?

shutting down opponents:
kg (for someone so skinny compared to most pf's he was/is a great defender, really athletic and lots of energy)
timmy (just like on offence, his defensive fundamentels used to be the best)
rodman (he's in the hall for his defence so yeah)
mchale (haven't seen him play but I heard barckley mention him as the hardest to score on)
sheed (this guy used to be all about defence and was a pest)

KG for sure comes to mind. Timmy is a solid choice.

i might as well try to put Lebron as well. he's quick and strong even though he's smaller.

Just out of curiosity, what do you guys think of Shawn Kemp in his prime? Good defender?

Prime sheed and duncan were all world post defenders. Garnett was damn good too and he could also switch out and guard a pick & roll. I'll say kg

Bron isn't shutting down 4s. See Dirk. He's a great help and team defender. Not individual shut down like the others named

Gasol he has killer D. Lol

But seriously KG and Rodman come to mind.

Kemp was a beast between '93 and about '01.

He got most of his talent on the court on D, but somehow on O, he didn't seem to grow, or harness himself (not that you asked).

A slightly smaller guy that played mostly 3, but some 4, that is massively underrated is Bobby Jones. Make a list for 3's and stick him in the top 3.

Man is the 4 position extremely hard to defend... from the face-ups like Dirk to the guys who play closer to a center like Duncan lol

Yea, I was surprised because I was so interested in seeing how he would fare against Dirk after completely locking down a PG (Rose) in the ECF.

From what I remember, Haslem did most of the defending on Dirk.

Ibaka doesn't shut anyone down, he just blocks a **** ton of shots with his help D. Hes not a great individual 1 on 1 defender.

1 ON 1, definitely not KG. I would go with either Rodman (if he wasn't obsessing over rebounds), McHale or Sheed.

Pau Gasol because he will flop, flail his arms in a windmill, and yell so loud you can hear it from your tv. He'll get the offensive charge call on the guy he's guarding.

That's my point he wasn't on him and he was option number 1 for the Mavs . If he was lock up like they claim him to be he would be on the stars. He guards stars in spurts but far from this all world lock up defender Psd makes him out to be. Being defensively versatile is different from being a lock up defender

I thought of him. He was tough. Very pesky.

Chronz

I dont know what to make of Ben. He could be taken advantage of by guys who could shoot. I remember Shareef torching him once early in his career and then trying to take note of his defense on bigmen who played like small forwards. In no way am I saying he was a liability 1 on 1.

He could hang with an older Shaq but against Duncan and Dirk, I recall Sheed doing most of the heavy lifting 1 on 1. Ben was an other worldly helper and a bull in the post and could move his feet but I really doubt he has the length to contest without a jumping start.

True. Short lived, but worthy of discussion. I just remember watching Kemp literally torch a guy I thought was the best defender in the league, and shaking my head.

What traits do you think Rodman has that makes him such a great defender at his size? The guy's like shorter and giving up a lot of size to some of these guys.

Innate strength and athleticism. Phil Jackson called him the greatest athlete hes ever coached, some people are just genetically gifted. Rodman could party all night and be good to go by the morning. I only shudder at what he could have done had he not been undersized, or an alcoholic, he could have been a modern day Bill Russell with more strength and better rebounding.

As far as physical traits, I dont have any specs on him. Dont know what kind of reach he had but his strength, flexibility and tenacity made him the most versatile defender ever, moreso than Pippen.

I think you would have more luck with the Boston version.

I remember an old ESPN breakdown where they spoke about how important Ervin Johnson was, he was the guy who would check Duncan 1 on 1. I dont know how often KG checked the opposing teams best big but I doubt it was all that often.

Dirk ate KG for breakfast that one playoff series. Hell even in Boston I remember James Posey guarding the likes of Bosh, though KG has proven capable of shutting his pansy *** down.

Rodman sounds amazing. I just remember that he studied tapes just to see where the rebounds go so he could anticipate where they usually bounced and the tendencies of each player's shots. If he had put that type of intensity on the offensive end, he would have one of the best all around.

So, who do you pick to make that stop on the opponent? KG or Rodman.
