What do you value more? Leading the league in PER or Win Shares or WS/PER 48 minutes or PPG - Leading the league

None of the above.

I value an entire body of work using my eyes and a full collection of stats (advanced stats particularly).

Those stats mean nothing, fans look to much at that stuff instead of just enjoying the game. I doubt any of the players are looking to make sure their "per" is up. Pathetic.

BTW Hollinger needs to get laid

Per is the most relevant out of the three, sometimes watching the game is better though.

I wouldn't say that because you can be biased as hell just watching the game.

PER is kind of overrated in the sense that people automatically think that Player A who had a higher PER than player B is the better player, which isn't necessarily true.

Hmm...

#1 is between WSP48 and PER
Both are great stats if you understand how to use them correctly.

Using PPG alone to judge anything is just stupid so that's last by default.

Win shares is a stupid stat. As for PER/PPG/whatever, need a more collective body of work to tell, and need to watch a bit as well.

Towel waves per game. Therefore Adam Morrison will be MVP this year.

Obviously you need a lot more than one, but I'd probably say WS/48.

PER also depends on minutes played as well. So I guess 30 mpg is the minimum time for PER to be really valuable.

it made me realize how dominant JORDAN/BRON/WILT are

i never realized just how dominant they were until this PER thing showed up

my eyes only showed me 1/4th of the dominance til PER just took it to astronaut heights

Both PER and WS have their uses. WS can be helpful, but is limited by context. PER is also not a perfect stat.

PPG is one of the least useful stats without context.

Given the choices, ws/48 is the only one with some sort of context so I went with that, but I would honestly choose all of the above, including more advanced stats like PPP, isolation points, various defensive stats, etc.

Wow. Amazing anyone still thinks like this. Not that stats aren't without their limitations, or specific statistical formulas without their flaws. But to say they "mean nothing"? I'm sorry, but really, that's just plain ignorant. Don't criticize what you can't understand.

Who cares what players look at? Most players in team sports are concerned with limited issues like meal money, buying cars, winning and learning the new play the coach added. Historical knowledge is absent for most, as is the ability to have or use sober analysis.

In Basketball every GM and most Coaches keep close track of this data, and make choices based on it.

For instance that's why in part Ainge knew to dump Perkins. A large part of the hue and cry over the deal was that fans and players thought he was still the elite defender from 2007-2009, but he wasn't, he had started going down hill and the knee problems turned him into the stiff he has been for OKC and his last year in Boston.

Based on what? Listening to Network Announcers and reading some web sites? Or is there actual meat here?

For me it was between PER and WS48
Looked up http://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2012_leaders.html
And I like the lineup of players I see under PER stat more than under WS48.
WS48 - James Harden ranked 4th, Noah 6th, Ryan Anderson 9th. Are they that good?
