View Full Version : Could Nash win MVP of the league this year?

Just from seeing the preseason highlights so far... Nash is so much in his element running the Lakers offense. He appears to be at the absolute top of his game, already, and if he jells as expected with the Lakers superstar talent and keeps improving with the offense... if he can continue elevating his game and sustain this level through the season...

I don't know. I saw those Golden State highlights and it occurred to me that maybe Nash could win another MVP.

ha no.... it would be a MIRACLE if he finished in the top 5. There is just no way a 39 year old steve nash beats out Kobe/Dwight, Durant, and especially not Lebron for MVP.

I don't see it. Especially with Kobe and Dwight on the team. I can definitly see him averaging 12+ assists a game with the tools he has now, but the rest, not enough.

Basically, unless the team is 1st seed, Nash posts 17 or 18+ points and 12+ assists, then I don't think he will have a shot.

no he can not, maybe like top 10 in voting for a couple of months at best
and besides he shouldn't have won those other 2 mvp awards in the first place

I would love to see it, even though I don't like the Lakers. I think its very unlikely, however. Nash is getting older and older, and while he still has boatloads of talent, its difficult to fight your age.

Also, that team has so many weapons, it will be tough to stand out. If they win, it won't be because Nash carried them, it will be because they have stars all over the court. It will be like Lebron's first year in Miami.

He would most likely need to break Stockton's record for APG.. So unlikely though he could avg 12 a game getting to 14.5 would be difficult seeing as he probably won't play a ton of minutes early in the season. On top of that he'd need to avg 15-18 PPG in that loaded offense. So unless he's playing a lot with the bench and getting chances to shoot as well as rack up the assists I don't think it will happen. Lebron put up 27 - 8 - 6 last year, I only see the assists going up for him. Barring injury he probably has the MVP for the next couple years. Unless something spectacular happens, but in that case you'd expect it to be Lebron

I highly doubt dat he will but i know for a fact he will play very well because of all the weapons he has now and the pick and roll wit howard all day too easy!

15ppg / 15apg with 67%TS shooting + 72 wins = Nash MVP.

I don't see it happening though.

That's a lot of ifs. You laker fans are rediculous might as well make a thread saying Carmelo could be MVP if Knicks gel, if they get a top 3 record, if he leads the league in scoring.

Of course if anyone does that stuff they could be MVP but he's not so stop the ******** speculating when ur team hasn't even played a damn game yet.

My calculations tell me that he is the third best player on the team.

Think of the reasons why Harden or Bosh wont win MVP, then apply those same reasons to Nash.

could he? sure, but the chances are infinitesimally small. if the the award goes to a laker(remember tons of players outside the team that will produce great numbers on winning teams),it would likey go to kobe or dwight before nash gets consideration

It's possible but no.... You just seen him play like 15 minutes lol ... I know he looked good... he is good... but the voters wont vote for him only way is if he averaged ... over 15 assists (which is possible imo) and over 12 points with AMAZING shooting percentages (which is likely) and the Lakers have the best record by far (which again is likely) so actually he does have a shot but in this case the MVP would go to Bryant

Mr. LA

Phoenix 2nd best passer was Telfair, he averaged 2.3 assists. Now in the lakers Kobe will get his 4-5, Pau will get his 3-4, Blake will get his 2-3 etc. Do you think the lakers will average 30apg with nash?

10-10-2012, 03:58 PM

Where did I say he will average 15 assists? I think what I said was... That's what he would need to do to win the MVP award... and then I also said it isn't impossible playing with an all star starting 5 ... and good shotters off the bench ... I didn't say he will .... then again I don't think it's that crazy ...his high in assists were 11.6 and that was with scrubs... yes Amare, Redd, Barbosa, Marion, and Hill are scrubs....check their career numbers without Nash and with! and what are they now? nothing, also don't give that age crap...his age barely affects his play....he could play til 50 if he wants...his game doesn't rely on athletic ability at all....sure it will affect him a little but that is why he plays 30 minutes instead of 40...with that being said I think he averages like 10 and 13

kobe , lebron, and durant and about 8 other stars would have to go down for nash to win a mvp at this point

If his defensive game was better he should win it every year... Honestly I am not sure anyone is more important then Nash to a team when you factor in the position and what he does for an offense... If Nash was younger and as good as he is now there is nobody I would take over him at the point if he could play defense.

Basically, unless the team is 1st seed, Nash posts 17 or 18+ points and 12+ assists, then I don't think he will have a shot.

I mean, I can see the reasons why it is unlikely (he would have to outperform Kobe, and meanwhile Durant and Lebron will likely have huge seasons, etc).

But just watching that GS game the other day, I was amazed at how Nash kind of changes the whole game. Kobe may be saying it's "his team," but it was clear to see that the Lakers are playing Nash's game now. Nash is at the helm, and he's picking apart the defense with his signature style. He's at the command console, and it's just all him, making the Lakers look spectacular just wheeling and dealing, making it look easy. Where last season the Lakers were working SOOOO hard for buckets, and then Nash is just like "bing bing pow" like not even breaking a sweat.

I can see a scenario where this Laker team just absolutely dominates, and Nash shoots a significantly better FG% and 3PT% than Lebron, and adds on 12+ assists a game. Sure, Lebron probably gets the MVP anyway, I mean, the commercials and advertisements are probably already made, but I can't help but wonder if Nash is about to have a really amazing season at a true MVP level.

Nash will probably be the best pure PG in Lakers history. Regardless of the "pure" or "hybrid" point guard distinction, Nash is definitely the best Laker PG since 92.

I now it's crazy but I don't think we can rule Nash out of the MVP scenario.

It's really not that crazy.

Think about it, which position this offseason did the lakers upgrade the most? If your answer is not "Point Guard", then you need to get your head checked.

Another thing to remember is that Nash will be the biggest game changer on this lakers team. The offense will now play a whole lot differently then ever before. Kobe won't hold the ball even close to as much as before, there will be a lot more pick and rolls (with Dwight and Pau doing the picking and rolling...good god), he will create better shots (duh), and lastly, his shooting is the icing on the cake.

With all that said, I don't think he would win MVP as long Kobe and Dwight are on the team unless Nash scores up to 18 points or more (which is unlikely obviously) and he racks up 12 or 13 assists (which is very possible on this team but don't get your hopes up for that).

I'm a huge Nash fan but in reality he is not a numbers guy he's a winning guy. The chance that he passes 14pts a game is very unlikely but i could see him setting a record for assists this year.

I have to say no, not because he wouldn't be deserving, but because there would be two other players stealing votes away from him on his own roster; Kobe and Dwight.

If the Lakers improve, there are two key aquisitions that could be the reason; Dwight, or Nash. Now, the Lakers have room to improve... they were 41-25 last season, which is pace for a 50+ win season, but NOT pace for a 60 win season... a 60 win season would certainly suggest some awards are due to somebody in the purple and gold.

Let's face it; Shaq and Kobe BOTH had more than one MVP season, yet both only have one MVP to their name? The reason? Because they both had MVP season while playing with each other. They stole votes away from each other, and at the same time negate the value of the other.

This year's roster will face much the same problem. Dwight and Kobe and Nash may all be MVP worthy, which will negate the canidacy of the other potential MVP candidate on that team.

I expect that Dwight will recieve the runner up to the MVP award a la Kevin Garnett in 08; aka DPOY. Kobe and Nash will have to settle for a ring. Now who would win the finals MVP if LAL were to win it all? That would be another question altogether.

But regualr season MVP? I can't see anybody in purple and gold winning it this season.
