View Full Version : Phil Jackson AGREES with Shaq on BROOK LOPEZ

The former Los Angeles Lakers coach didn't exactly pick sides in the recent dust-up between centers Shaquille O'Neal and Dwight Howard, but said "there is a lot to what (O'Neal) says" when he characterized Howard as a "pick-and-roll" player with a more limited offensive game than more traditional back-to-the-basket centers Andrew Bynum and Brook Lopez.

"Brook and Andrew are guys who have good touches. They're good scoring players and they have good offensive games," Jackson said on the "Waddle and Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000 in Chicago on Friday.

"Dwight's learning the post game and I think he has improved over the last couple years with his left hand. It looks like he's shooting the ball a lot better. He used to be a guy that you felt like you had to keep out of the lane. If you could do that, he was going to be limited in his scoring. Now he's developing some of the offensive game."

All he did was agree that Lopez has a better offensive game for a team structure.

More PPG /=/ Better offensive player

Dwight in Orlando was just give him the ball down low and he'll find a way to put it in.

Dwight in LA is going to have to play team ball, set screens, draw defenders away, back to the hoop, etc. He won't be getting over 25 PPG in LA because Kobe and Nash arn't going to give him all those shots.

he said there's a lot to what he says...he never said he agrees with him.

brook lopez does have good touch, he does have a nice back to the basket game. dwight is good with the pick and roll... we know this. phil never agreed that brook is better than dwight.

Leave it to wavey the troll to exclude this, cuz i know you didnt "forget" it.

"Dwight is a guy that has that amazing athletic ability but the overall game -- rebounding, defending, blocking shots, running the court -- this is a guy that runs with the wolves, so to speak. He can get up and down that court as quick as any of the guards and forwards because of his athletic ability."

Wow.

There you go.

Phil Jackson doesn't "agree" with what Shaq said. I read the article, and Jackson made sure the point out that rebounding and defence were HUGE parts of the game and that HOWARD was the best over-all center in the league and that he HAD made improvement in his offensive game the last couple years, and concedes that OFFENSIVELY Brook Lopez has a more finished game than Howard.

That doesn't sound like an agreement to me.

Nash and Gasol pick in roll is impossible in my opinion. TThats the pick in roll that scares me. Gasol can pop as well or finish at the rim.

IndiansFan337
10-06-2012, 04:20 PM
Well, Howard does rely on his athleticism a lot more than those players. But he has that asset to use. You shouldn't penalize guys for something like that.

If Bynum could run and jump like Howard he would be a lot better player, but if Howard could post up like Bynum he would be a much better player too.

Lopez looked all pumped up about the comment, while Avery and D-Will were CLEARLY not on Sahq's side, but had to be very diplomatic about their responce since Brook is on their team. "He needs to take that next step and become a defensive presence and increase his rebounding attempts". I LOVE that. Not increase his rebounding, but his rebounding attempts, as if he's not trying to start with... lol. Brilliant!

Brook Lopez is clueless on defense and cant rebound to save his life. Dudes 7 feet tall 265 pounds and plays like hes 6 8. Last i checked being able to rebound and defend is pretty important for a Center.

Not even a top 5 center until he improves defensively.

Dwight's a better back-to-the-basket player than both Bynum and Lopez; he's scored more in the post and made more hook shots than any player in the league for the last 4+ years and he does it at an efficient rate... Just because he's a proficient pnr player, a great finisher and extremely athletic, doesn't mean you should discredit the other aspects of his game.

People are overlooking Dwight's dominance in the post, it may look robotic, but it's very effective.

What I take from Shaq and Phil's comments is that Lopez is more highly regarded by pros and insiders than he is by posters here on PSD.

A lot of truth here. Shaq saying Lopez doesn't back down from anyone is a huge compliment. And that part wasn't a swipe at Howard. I don't think there are a hell of a lot of guys that Shaq would say that about.

I don't think Shaq or Phil was really saying they thought Lopez was better than Howard overall, but neither is laughing him out of discussion. I really can't even remember what a healthy Lopez looks like. I do remember lots of folks talking him up in his first few years and my not quite getting that from what I saw. But the guy is 24 and there's really only two years you can use to get a sense from him, and from what I see in terms of defensive win shares I think he's widely being portrayed as worse than he is on that end. He ain't Howard on D, but he's probably not much different, when healthy, than Hibbert. Rebounding could definitely use improvement. But given his offensive skills, I don't see that he can really be ranked as low as most people are ranking him. And again, he's 24.
