Craig Kimbrel first in history to fan half his batters faced

Braves closer Craig Kimbrel struck out three out of the four Pirates he faced Wednesday to become the first pitcher in major league history to fan at least half of the batters he faced.

Kimbrel racked up 116 strikeouts while facing 231 batters. That’s more than four strikeouts for each of the 27 hits he allowed. He struck out more than eight times as many batters as he walked (14), which is perhaps the most stunning stat of all for those of us who saw him as a prospect a few years back. He walked fewer batters in 62 2/3 innings this year than he did in 20 2/3 innings (16) following his arrival to the majors in 2010.

The record Kimbrel set today barely even requires a minimum-inning requirement. Not only is Kimbrel the first to do it in minimum 50 or 60 innings, but he’d be the first to do it with a minimum of six innings. Francisco Rodriguez struck out 13 of the 21 batters he faced after joining the Angels in Sept. 2002. He pitched 5 2/3 innings that month before becoming a postseason hero. No one else has done it over as few as three innings.

His 16.7 K/9 is also the highest rate in major league history for pitchers with at least 50 innings. Pretty good season I would say.

50.2%. Unreal

Pedro and Randy Johnson as starters got as high as 37.5%, which is probably more impressive considering they actually were starters.

Gagne had the second highest, with 44.8% in 03.

Chapman btw had 44.2% this season as well.

BTW, Kimbrel had a 17.42 K/9 in 2010, but that was only 20.2 IP

Not one Rockies starter came within 30 of Kimbrel's total. Hilarious in that sad sort of way

Why would you go with Chapman other than the flair of 105 MPH?

There's absolutely no way to defend choosing Chapman over Kimbrel. They're close but Kimbrel is clearly the better pitcher.

Well even though you can do it for any pitcher if you were to take away Chapmans June 10 inning blow up then his numbers would be just as insane and they're insane regardless.

The start Chapman had was unreal.

I would be happy to have both though.

I'd like to take away Kimbrel's worst outing too, the difference would still be about the same. Kimbrel was more valuable in 9 less innings.

Has a reliever won a Cy since Gagne when had the most converted saves in history or whatever it was? The Cy is a starters award(pretty much is) as stupid as that is. There should be a reliever award so it's not even debated.

This guy set multiple records this year:

FIP .78
xFIP .88
Avg. Against .126
OPS against .358
K/9 16.66
Hits/9 3.88

Not sure about him getting the Cy Young because of the lack of innings, but this might be the most dominant year of a pitcher ever.

How does it stack up against Eric Gagnes dominant cy young season? just wondering ... cause if its better than that than he should win it for sure

Kimbrel's numbers are better, but Gagne pitched more innings and had more saves, so his lack of innings could be a reason to not vote for him. He pitched about 20 more innings than Kimbrel.

He's the best relief pitcher in baseball, period....

Congrats to him, great accomplishment.

Did he ever start in the minors? Not that he should leave the pen but I wonder how he'd do as a starter.
