Well with Cabby also having a historic night, so did Rodney.

Fernando Rodney recorded one out in Wednesday's season-ending, 4-1 win over the Orioles, clinching the lowest ERA in major-league history for a relief pitcher with at least 60 innings pitched.

For a guy who has more or less been mediocre at best over his career to turn in these kind of numbers is impressive to say the least.

Probably will test positive for PEDs soon.

I wish i could say that is unlikely, but anytime someone goes from garbage to studly overnight, it will raise doubts.

I was told at the beginning of the season that I shouldn't have high hopes for the Rays bullpen with Fernando Rodney closing.

But nobody could have expected these results.

It's awesome, but also has a bit of luck in it as well.

Still neat.

631 ERA+!

Shame he has a club option for 2013, otherwise he would be looking at a big payday as one team grossly would have overpaid.

PEDs.

Look at Eric Gagne. I always suspected Brad Lidge too (how does he go from great to bad really quickly???).

If Rodney did this clean, then it has to be one of the greatest seasons ever. Something that not even Mariano Rivera could achieve.

To be honest, I really hope he did it clean. Great for the game if he did.

Guess it depends how you look at it. It's not as if Rodney was riding on confidence the past couple of years. The guy had no control, so what does he do? He stops trying to throw his hardest while trying to aim the ball every time he throws. Happened to me in high school a few times. Once you get confidence(which obviously Rodney has accumulated over the season), he's gonna stop trying to aim and just trust his stuff. Hence, the rise in velocity.

Of course, it could be PEDs. But PEDs don't help you throw strikes. Rodney has always thrown hard, just could never get it over the plate and when he did, it was down the middle half the time.

Historical year. Better than Kimbrel in 2012.

I just looked it up on fangraphs. When you say average velocity, did you mean his fastball? Because it's only gone up .7 mph, not 2 mph. Or am I looking at the wrong thing?

His player card on Brooks Baseball with the Pitch f/x

http://brooksbaseball.net/player_cards/player_card.php?player=407845

2012 - average was 97.79 on his 4-seamer
(he has a sinker he throws mainly)
2011 - 96.41

So in reality, it's only 1.38, and back in 2009, he was lower 97 for an average, so maybe it's not that big of a deal.
