Lead a team with no big name players ( I dont even think an allstar) to the playoffs in the west and almost beat the number 2 seed

Yup. One of the all-time best coaches, for his record with the Sonics and with the Nuggets.

Thibbs is a good coach but the thing that gets me is that he isn't much on adapting the team and his strategy. During the regular season, teams can get away with that but in the playoffs, is our weakness. So, instead of going with Thibbs, I'm going to go with Doc Rivers.

Shoot, Rivers may even be the next coach of our country after coach K steps down...

As a nuggets fan Karl is a little overrated, has some major problems with proper rotations, lineups, picking favorites, and reinforcing defensive ideals, borderline top 10 MAYBE but thats as far as i'll go

1. Popavich. easily, better than Phil imo

then I'd say Rivers, Thibbadeu, Carlisle, Adleman, Collins, Karl are all really great in there own ways.
lol at whoever put Spoelstra. THAT IS WHY HEAT FANS ARE SO DAMN ANNOYING.

Greg Pop is probably the best. As a Sixers fan and Duke fan Doug Collins is an incredible coach. After Eddie Jordan, Delieo, Cheeks its so nice to have a guy that is an iincredible communicator/person/coach. We way overachieved last year and I think Collins is one of the very few coaches who will be able to get to Bynum.

Pop is obviously at the top of the list of current NBA coaches.

Doc and Thibbes and Karl... I don't care what order they go in. They are all great coaches. Collins is also in there with Carlisle.

Of course, as long as Sloan and Jackson are alive... the best three living coaches will be (in no particular order): Pop, Jackson, Sloan.

I had to change my rankings to focus mainly on championships. That's what teams want the most, and even the best need a good coach to organize them.

1. Greg Poppovich
2. Doc Rivers
3. Rick Carlile
4. Rick Adelman
5. George Karl

I leave Erik Spoelstra out simply because there are a lot of coaches in the NBA who could win championships with a team like the Heat, and there are some veterans that just deserved more due than him. I'm under no circumstances saying Spoelstra is a bad coach.

I left off some coaches due to the fact that they have been in the spotlight due to having multiple superstars on their team (Doc Rivers, Carlisle, Brooks) or not enough (Scott Skiles, Byron Scott)...and yes, I know that means I shouldn't have put Pops on my list but he does a lot with less.

and Doc Rivers has been doing what?

Plenty coaches can't maintain egos especially at the size of Miami, and I saw him doing that in the years before the big 3 when he had teams of expiring cast offs playing without a hiccup.

Also several coaches would have tried to force a traditional lineup in the playoffs and came up short instead of starting Battier at the 4

How is Spo being 5 laughable to some of you but Doc Rivers being top 3 or 1 in some cases the norm? Doc had a career losing record and never won a playoff series before getting KG and Ray. The celtics have only been deteriorating since. The Heat has shown significant improvement each and every season Spo has been the head coach. Spo never had a losing year. Spo's specialty was player development for Dwyane Wade when Spo was an assistant, and I'd say he didn't do too bad.

Spo won his championship with only 3 future probably HOFs while Doc required possibly 4...Spo also has a title as an assistant

Spo is 2-1 vs Doc in playoff series

I love Spo, but I think something needs to be said about how Doc truly gets the best out of his guys year after year. Sure, he needed future HOF's to get the job done, but so did Spo, no? Not only that but there's no disputing that the best player's he's working with, referring to Spo here, are some of the best in the league. Boston's top players simply aren't on the same level. Pierce is past his time, KG is really good but let's face it he's past his time too, Rondo is great at times but he's also capable of terrible games offensively as well.

Hell, for the last couple of years this forum kept saying Miami should wipe the floor with Boston, yet it never really happened. In 2011, sure the Heat won in 5 games but had Rondo not gotten hurt whose to say that series wouldn't have gone further. And last year speaks for itself. It took a 45-15-5 game from LeBron in Game 6 on the road in Boston to save their season against this same team, as well as a close Game 7. We say they're old, yet Rivers somehow keeps these guys motivated to play hard. Doc has been through the ringer, and for a longer period of time. Spo still has some work to do as a coach before we crown him top 5.
