Don't know, I find some other match-ups much more entertaining. Division & WC hunt ftw.

Well, we won some games, but at least we eliminated the annoying Rays. Now back to losing, Dice is a lost cause anyways, that's why I am ok with it.
I don't care if we get #6, #7, #8 or #9 pick, I just want it to be protected.

And by the way: I just can't watch Bard pitching right now, he's sooooo bad. I would have already shut him down at some point.

bagwell368
09-19-2012, 09:41 PM
I'm quite sure Bard is done as a Sox. I'm also quite sure if he ends up in a pitchers park in the NL with a good pitching coach, he will reclaim his status as a top MR ace.

EDIT: Now Miller walked someone for a total of 6 walks in the inning. I think they've given up 9 runs too...

Have to admit I'm not watching that close.

Random OT question: Does the winner of the WC play in game automatically play the "#1 seed"? So if the A's beat the O's, does Oakland play Texas or does MLB still factor in the division rivals?

Also, quite the ride this Dice-K era has been....bleh

Off-topic, but found this really interesting...

Unconfirmed rumors began flying on Twitter Thursday that the Yankees' Robinson Cano is about to be suspended for the use of performance-enhancing drugs, and Peter Gammons admits the reports aren't surprising to him.

"I heard something . . . about three weeks ago," the veteran baseball reporter and analyst said Thursday on 'Felger & Mazz' on WBZ-FM (98.5 The Sports Hub). "And, like a lot of things, I've . . . never gotten any confirmation."

Nor does he necessarily believe them.

"I'm not sold on the Cano thing yet," Gammons said. "Especially since most of the time, the Scott Boras clients are very careful . . . "

However, he's not ready to dismiss them completely.

"Now, people are very careful about letting any information out . . . [But] these things do circulate. The one that did turn out to be true -- but, again, I could never get confirmation [even though] I was told by about six sources for five weeks -- was Melky Cabrera (of the Giants, who was suspended for PED use last month)."

And it it were true, and the Yankees lost the services of Cano for the postseason?

"[It] would certainly be an incredible bombshell," Gammons said. "I mean, if you get one of the handful -- three, four -- best players in the league, a guy who's going to be in the top three [in] MVP [voting], and he ends up testing positive and misses the postseason, it would be an unbelievable story. Really."

Don't think "one and done" is an easy task. But I am not sure 50gms is a legit penalty. I just wish guys would stop taking it.

With that being said, I hope the rumor turns out to be wrong. Even though he's a Yankee, Cano is one of the better players in baseball and it would hurt the image of the game trumendously, especially after everyone declared the Bonds, McGwire and Sosa Era to be over.

Not entirely sure where to put this, so I'll put it in here till it gets moved to the appropriate thread, just wanted to run something by you guys.

Right at the end of last season, my friend and I were talking about how the Sox would do during the 2012 season, he thought they would win the division, I didnt think they would smell it. Anyway, we made a bet that goes like this:

If the Sox come in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place - friend gets $20.

If the Sox come in 4th place - I get $1,000.

If the Sox come in 5th place - the bet is cancelled, no money exchanged (regretting this largely.)

Anyway, with the season coming to a close, and the Sox having 3 more W's than the Jays, (3 more games played as well), my friend offered me a settlement of $350, which I declined.

Do you guys think I should have accepted, and if not, what is the proper counter-offer? Remember, he is my friend and do not want to be a complete douchebag and let this bet semi-ruin a friendship, I do not expect to collect $1000 from him, and will definately take a settlement if the Sox are close to locking up 4th, (the most I would make him pay is prob $750.

What do you guys think?

EDIT - we have not discussed if they tie for 4th what would happen, but I assume the bet would be cancelled as the Jays have the tiebreaker over the Sox

He did very good in the rotation before he got hurt. He was moved to the pen last year because he sucked, but this year shows that he was not fully recovered yet. He has the repertoire for it, this team desperately needs starting pitching, and solid starting pitching is more valuable than any reliever. Instead of pitching him every single game they should have stretched him out.

The biggest concern i have here is his stuff being considerably weaker like Bards if he is moved to the rotation. But he has been a starter all of his life and was supposed to be a pretty good one, so i think its a bit different than Bard's case. It will be interesting if they will want to risk "making the same mistake" if Tazawa is moved and ends up being ******.

-Lavigne43-

Bard was worth the shot even with his past issues. Taz looks nastier than Bard ever has right now and he excelled at that role before he got hurt. Our rotation is terrible so it should be a no brainer.

No, I don't think so. Tazawa has a very effective split finger this year, and he's using it in place of his curveball and a little bit of his fastball. It's a good combo, but this year Tazawa finally looks as good as Bard did when he was hot - not better.

As for Tazawa - did you mean Tazawa excelled as a SP? In AA maybe, not in the Majors.

I hope they do both do well in the correct roles for them. Not sure SP is right for either.

-Lavigne43-
09-30-2012, 09:20 PM
If I recall correctly he was pitching injured during those starts. It was also his first season in the organization. I don't think Bard has ever been this good over a 40 inning stretch. Tazawa's K/BB rate is absurd

SirHizz
09-30-2012, 10:02 PM
Im not sure if I would say that Tazawa is pitching better than Bard has ever been, but Taz might be better suited in the rotation compared to Bard (much better control and already a successful history in the minors at starting), therefore the risk factor is IMO significantly smaller.

-Lavigne43-
09-30-2012, 10:21 PM
Tazawa: 1.50 ERA, 1.82 FIP, 8.80 K/BB, 1.93 GB/FB

Bard's bests in a season: 1.93 ERA (2010), 2.96 FIP (2011), 3.08 K/BB (2011), 1.68 GB/FB (2011)

Bard only had a higher K/9 during his rookie season. Bard obviously has more innings in those seasons, but 42 is still a significant amount for a reliever, and a ridiculous amount for how long Tazawa has been on the team.

SirHizz
10-01-2012, 01:00 AM
Well, lavigne. I like those numbers, but don't we have to take the sample size into account? IIRC, Bard was having some terrific seasons until certain points. He was dramatically overused, he was our go-to-guy in the pen, even more valuable than Paps.

But again, I like Tazawas make-up better. Is there even some chatter that we might make Tazawa a starter again? Because if we do, we are running out of rotation spots next year.

Well he never had a chance in the majors, making 4 start before his elbow blew out. He did beat the skankees and Tigers, allowing just 1ER between those starts.

I think where Tazawa is right now is best for the team. We have little late inning option. Lackey is back next year as the 4th starter and they just need to find a Kuroda/Loshe on a 1-2 year deal.

Morales definitely going to get a shot at starting unless they sign some FA.

Tazawa is what you want reliever to do, throw strikes. The BP is rather weak and building Tazawa up as a set up or closer is important.

Bard had great stretches, but I don't think he ever had one this good for this long. He always had random games where he labored a bit to get threw the inning. Bard's most innings in a season is 74. Add on Tazawa's minor league totals and he has 84 innings so far.

Our bullpen has the 16th highest era in baseball. Our rotation has the 27th highest era in baseball. This team will likely be mediocre next year, and Tazawa pitching in relief will hardly make a difference. For the future they should find out if he can be a good major league starter, since that is so much more valuable and important to this team.

The only argument I can see for keeping him in the pen is to hope for him to be a dominant closer, and then trade him while he's overvalued as a closer.
