As opposed to a player who has no defensive skills at all?

I hate when people neglect the other side of the basketball court.

This post is exactly why The Worm is one of the most underrated players of all time. The guy was a defensive stud and a rebounding nightmare.

He's arguably the greatest rebounder of all time. His accomplishments speak for themselves.

The Big O. imo

No way he's underrated, he's rated just about right.

Moses and McHale are great choices. Rodman is a no way.

Havlicek. Sam Jones.

Lesser guys - Paul Silas, bobby jones, cheeks, Cowens

All over multi threads on Rodman. He does not meet the criteria of an all time great. He's a bench player or role player.

Fat Lever. Alex English. Moses Malone. Larry Nance. Brad Daughtery. Mark Price. Mark Aguire. Adrian Dauntley. Bill Laimbeer. Joe Dumars. Those are some guys that don't get mentioned much.

As far as established players go, I'll go with Robinson and Hakeem were both amazing and in my opinion better than Jordan. And throw Stockton in there as well. Stockton was the best pure point guard in the history of the game and there will never be another player like him in the game again. And his FG%? Forget about it. Stockton could score whenever he wanted. And still, he doesn't get the kind of love he deserves.

Havlicek was pretty awesome. Great all around player.

And Norm Nixon to. And Darrell Walker was a great defender.

Hmmm, could have swore this was a Most Underrated Players of All-Time thread so I'm not sure what you you're getting at with "criteria of an all time great". Butttttt since you brought it up, he IS an all time great EASILY.

This is Dennis Rodman...not Jason Terry.

We're talking about a 6'6/6'7 STARTING small/power forward that played 33 MPG that won DPOY twice, 5X Champ, 2X All Star, 7X 1st Team All Defense, 7X Rebounding Champ (consecutive), arguably the greatest rebounder OF ALL TIME, HOFer.

He doesn't get his just dues because he's not an offensive player (excluding offensive boards) and he's weird. But, few are better than him at what he does.

You have to be great to be underrated. He wasn't great - not in the sense of all time great. His height means nothing. He can either do the job or not.

He was never the best player or 2nd best player on any of his teams - was he?

Kevin McHale was a far greater player - why don't you push for him?

Rating Rodman gives me a headache, Ive heard all the arguments, and hes one of the few players that really shine far and above his meager statistics.

It cant be a coincidence how much better teams got when he arrived. Even in his final days the Lakers were far better with him than without.

I'm not opposed to "defense". I just think it would have been nice if he could hit a shot or two. I mean he was absolutely horrific on offense.

McHale might take the cake as most underrated of all-time, though. I NEVER see him on anyone's all-time list consistently. To tell you the truth he might be as good as duncan for an all time PF.

What about Dantley..............54% from the field is wicked!

anyone that puts barkley or malone ahead of mchale never watched the nba in the 80's when they played the best brand of basketball.

yeah, it was called "team" basketball, which was all about the team first. Today's ball is more about isolation plays, whereas in the 80's it was about about working it to the open man.

I understand Rodman was limited offensively but if you think he was a role player or a bench player you are seriously underrating his impact. When was the last time a bench player was averaging 18 rebounds a game for a season? And which bench player has a career rebound avg of 13 a game? Not to mention the guy was only 6'7" on a good day.

Scottie Pippen is the most underrated player on forums because Jordan stans love to rewrite history as if MJ did it all by himself, or that he created Pippen.

Get ready for mr auto paste to come in here and tell you how MJ did win without an All-Star, without HCA and that he did in fact create the player that Pippen would become. Without MJ, he feels Pippen never becomes a man.
