View Full Version : Who are the Top 5 best perimeter defenders in the NBA?

Fresno

Seems like nobody has a consensus Top 5.

So who are the best perimeter defenders? The All-Defense team doesn't always mean you are the best defender at your position as some guys *coughKobecough* make the list off of reputation alone.

My vote would be:

1. LeBron
2. Tony Allen
3. Dwyane Wade
4. Shane Battier
5. Dominic McGuire (really, really underrated player)

Andre Iguodala is a good perimeter defender because he plays good perimeter defense. When he defends an opposing player on the perimeter, the player sometimes has a hard time scoring because of Andre Iguodala's good perimeter defense.

Also all these mentions of guys like Leonard, MBah a Moute, Parsons etc you guys need to chill. They are good but more like top 10-15 rather than top 5 Luol Deng, Shawn Marion, Grant Hill etc are all still in the league and they are better perimeter defenders than those guys. Deng especially. Ronnie Brewer is really good in that regard and is just on the outside of the top 5 with Deng and Shump for me.

Gerald Wallace is the best big man perimeter defender he is a SF and guarded PFs as the number 1 guy in the NBA 2 yrs ago.

Just because GW guarded PFs two years ago does not make him the best big man perimeter defender. Either GW is not the best "big man" (I guess you mean SF) perimeter defender or he's the most underrated defender in the entire NBA, I'll go with the former.

Battier has really dropped off, he shouldnt be in anyones top 5.

Yeah, as a Bulls fan, I don't think we've ever played a SG who he couldn't shut down or severely limit. I think I'd still take Deng over him though, just for the simple fact that Deng can guard most SFs effectively.

Battier does not deserve to be anywhere near this list anymore. He was pretty below average last season and people are simply riding his name value at this point. Also Avery Bradley really? Never knew playing in only 25 games last year makes you a top 5 defender. Downright hilarious.

I like Kawhi and think he's going to be a stud. Although he is a good defensive player, he just doesn't have the foot speed and hands like guys like Bradley and Shumpert. Him and Luc Richard are more effort/instinct defenders, and a good ones at that -- but not elite (at least yet in Leonard's case).

As one of the objective Knick fans on this site, I can tell you that Shumpert is far from overrated, the kid is the truth. Barring any significant decline after his injury, he'll be a perennial All-NBA defender.

Your thinking of defensive rating which is a useless stat. Synergy is actually a widely accepted defensive metric system for evaluating individual players and 1 on 1 match ups. As a result many teams used it and so do a lot of informed fans. Take a look into it, very interesting to browse through.

Just based on what I saw last season there was no pressure defender in the entire game that was as good as Avery Bradley and this coming from a guy who's favourite current player is Andre Iguodala. His combination of quickness, footwork, instincts, defensive IQ and persistence was unmatched by any other player I witnessed last year. If you were facing a full court press/trap he's the last player an offensive player would like to see coming up the floor. Anyone questioning whether or not he should be in the top five should take a look at the player for a little bit.

He was hands down the Celtics best perimeter defender last season. Rondo wasn't even close. Kyle Lowry, Chris Paul, Jrue Holiday are all better individual perimeter defenders at the PG than Rondo and Rubio is more valuable on D on the perimeter than Rondo was. I still view Rondo as top 7 defensively but certainly not the clear cut best. Eric Bledsoe is another really underrated defender at the PG. His impact late last season on that end of the floor for the Clipps was undeniable.

It fell off somewhat last year (in certain situations) due to injury and him losing some explosiveness/footspeed but it was still elite.

That's because Wade is an exceptional help defender and he plays alongside solid defensive minded players in a solid perimeter defensive system. Wade last season wasn't as good as he was in the past as an individual perimeter defender. Still top 15 IMO but not top 3.

His m2m defense was still fairly good although not elite like it usually is.

He did struggle guarding some quicker guards due to the injury and not having his usual quickness/explosiveness.

I'd sill consider him an elite defender although top 5 is probably too high.

Its one thing to say Lebron is a better perimeter defender than Iggy, but to say there is a gap between them is just silly and trolling

There's a pretty big gap. You just don't want to believe it because you're such a big Heat/Lebron hater and have a reputation on a silly sports forum website for letting your pride control what you type in your incorrect/false posts

I'd switch Iggy and LeBron b/c Iggy has been doing it a longer time and more consistently and is always guarding the best player of the opposing team, while LeBron shares the duties with Battier and sometimes even Wade. But yes, those are the top 5 IMO.

I mean seriously do you guys even bother to watch basketball anymore? How can Artest and Battier be anywhere near the top 5 on these lists? These are two players who now struggle to be top 15 and they are getting more love in the top 5 than Tony Allen, Luol Deng and Thabo Sefolosha. This isn't a lifetime achievement award. :pity:

What has Battier and Artest done within recent years to warrant them being better than the Bulls defensive anchor Luol Deng what have they done better than Tony Allen, what have they done better than Thabo? Bradley, Marion, Hill, etc

People putting Metta on their list seriously need their eyes checked... This isn't Pacers/Kings Artest or even Rockets Artest. He's nowhere close to the player he was back then.

knicks fans at their finest, ladies and gentlemen.

shumpert is NOT a top perimeter defender. he has potential to be, but as of RIGHT NOW, he's not.

This

Afflalo is brutal now. No longer even an average defender.

Not this. He is still above average, just wasn't quite as good as the '11-'12 season last year.

1. Iggy
2. T.Allen
3. King James
4. Bradley
5. Rondo

Dwyane Wade? :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Dwyane Wade is an average on the ball defender, terrible off the ball defender, but he is the best help defender at the guard position.

This. Also Battier isnt that great a defender anymore.

Top 5
1. LeBron
2. Tony Allen
3. Iggy
4. Sefalosha
5. Deng

I know you to be a huge homer I'm a little surprised you didn't mention Brewer he NEEDs to get some recognition for his work on the perimeter defensively.

Ofcourse. Their man to man defense is close but LeBron is also an incredible help defender. And LeBron is more versatile as he regularly guards all three perimeter positions.

Kobe is more a situational Defender. His best defense depends on the situation. If it's in the first quarter he plays average defense. But If its a play where you need to lock down your player for a possession then Kobe is the guy. Well that's how it seems to me

Lebron is not an elite defender, what makes him good defensively is because of the refs that seems afraid of blowing their whistles against him. So Lebron, you must thank the refs 4 for making you a good defender.:clap::clap:
