Things had run their course in LA. I read the Jerry West autobiography and he touched on this. Riley was a bit of an ego maniac and he was getting along with the front office and had worn out his welcome with some of the players as well, but West didn't really go into details. Riley is the one who walked away from the job though. He wasn't fired, now was his contract up. Wiki says something about anger management issues as well.

Whatever he's doing in Miami from a Vice President & GM perspective, he learned every bit of those tactics from the great Jerry West.

So whatever may be the reason why he left, in my eyes, Pat Riley will always be a Los Angeles Laker.

1972 title as a Laker player, and 1982, 85, 87 and 88 title as the coach of the Lakers.

Well he has had a lot more success as being part of the Lakers organization. Granted it was 20+ years ago.

Exactly. And plus, all these Heat fans who keep calling Pat Riley "the godfather", well guess what, he wouldn't be the "guru" that they claim him to be if it weren't for the TRUE GODFATHER of Basketball GMs, the Logo, Mr. Jerry West.

Godfather wanted to rule with different franchises, explore different challenges. He left the job by himself and that could be for various inside issues we'll never know. May be he was bored as well. But for sure he didn't make any mistake seeing what he's accomplished afterwards.

You're telling me Magic was savoring at the moment of Mike Dunleavy becoming the coach and overtaking Riles?

Magic and Riles for the most part have a good relationship. When Magic's HIV thing broke out, Riles was with him from day one. When no one would allow Magic to even step foot on a basketball court, Riles invited Magic to MSG and do a little workout. You would know this if you watched that wonderful ESPN Documentary "The Announcement".
