Brooklyn coach Avery Johnson doesn't see Nets as title-ready

Two of the Brooklyn Nets’ key players—center Brook Lopez and new addition Joe Johnson—went on the record as saying they intend to challenge for an NBA title this season. Their coach must not have been present when those comments were made.

Avery Johnson knows his Nets team has made significant roster improvements, but he isn’t quite ready to crown them before Lopez, Joe Johnson, Gerald Wallace and Deron Williams enter their first training camp together.

Avery Johnson, speaking at Fort Worth’s Dunbar High School, recognized that he has a talented group, but he wasn’t prepared to talk titles.

“Deron was a big key to the whole puzzle,’’ Avery Johnson said, according to The Dallas Morning News. “To be able to acquire some other talent through free agency or trades or re-signing some of our own guys, it’s pretty exciting for us. We’re not there yet. We’re not a championship team. We got a lot of work to do. But at the same time, we have a much better talent pool than we’ve had the last two years.

“We’re much more versatile than we’ve ever been. Right now, we look good on paper. Now we got to take it from looking good on paper and apply the work to go (forward).’’

Avery Johnson has good reason to temper his expectations. The Nets finished last season with a 22-44 record, and Joe Johnson is the only significant outside addition. Lopez will return to the court after playing only five games in the Nets’ final year in New Jersey.

Still, there will be much competition in the Eastern Conference with the Miami Heat coming off a title year and the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks looking to improve in 2012-13.

Why is every other thread about the Nets recently?

Everyone is looking for a reason to troll. Mainly Domefavors, but at least he admits it.
