View Full Version : Pirates need 12 more wins for first winning season in 19 years

The Pirates are now 70-60. August didn't go too well for them, winning only three series the entire month. If they play .400 ball the rest of the way (12-20), then they'll have their first winning season since 1992. The schedule down the stretch appears to be pretty easy, with most of the remaining opponents having losing records, but then again, August turned out to be harder than it looked initially. If the Pirates can win three more series, then I'll feel a lot more confident in their chances for a winning season, but August left me feeling a bit rattled. It's like the team's performance has gone up and down with the temperature this season. Should I worry?

It'd be cool if the Pirates were the second NL wild card team, but I wasn't necessarily expecting that to happen this season anyway. My expectation was simply a winning record.

By the way, whoever changed the topic title should make it say "winning season," not ".500 season." Another 12 wins would give the Pirates 82 wins for the season.

Why do you want me to suffer? :(

It's about time my pirates had a winning record. Since I've been alive..they've been terrible.

I hope they get it as well. That team deserves some success after all the suffering the team has done the past few seasons.

Imagine the atmosphere down the stretch there. They deserve to at least get close to the playoffs.

I am pulling for the Pirates. : ) But only as long as they do not hurt the chances of the Dodgers making the playoffs! I love watching teams and franchises that have had struggles for long periods of time, rise and become a top level team/organization.

I'm rooting for the Pirates to make it as well. Would be nice to see them make it, they've waited long enough and made some solid moves and let things perculate the right way. Go Bucs!

What worries me is that the Pirates end the regular season hosting the Braves. I'd like for the Pirates to get their 82nd win before then, if possible.

Thanks for the compliment I guess. I've gotten a few odd looks and a few snide remarks on my Pirate's fan hood these last well, I say 15 years as 1997 is the first season I can vividly recall. Its been tough sledding glad to see most of the rest of the nation is behind us now.

The funny thing in all that to me is that many Cubs fans believe we're years behind that team.

tell anyone who comments about that to **** off. how can anyone question your fanhood if you have been afna of a team that your literally can not remember having a winning season for 15 years? think about it, most college age or younger pirates fans weren't even alive the last time they had a winning season. its an unbeleive strech of suffering for their fans, so I dont see how anyone could be rooting against them doing it this year short of the pirates costing there team a playoff spot

Way to jinx it... but I do hope they get it. I was a big Clint Hurdle fan during his stint with the Rangers.

I always like it when an underdog wins. I knew that the Pirates were going to be a decent team, but I didnt expect them to make the playoffs. Im impressed and hope they make the playoffs.

Well, they got swept by the Brewers last weekend (), but they just took two of three from the Astros, and they host the Cubs next. Their magic number is 10 now. If they go 10-16 down the stretch, then they'll have their first winning season since 1992. Anything more than 10 wins would be gravy to me. Anything less than 10 wins would be a kick in the balls, especially given how strong the team looked in July.

Just. 10. More. Wins.

They sit just 1.5 games out of the 2nd WC. I'm sure they have their eyes on that prize.

I know this may sound like an obvious statement but I fully expect guys like McCutchen, Walker, and Burnett especially, to really give it their all these next few weeks and ensure a winning season, maybe even a wildcard

I hope so. What worries me is that 11 of those 14 games are on the road, and they haven't played too well on the road this season. They only have four home series left, but three of them are against the Brewers, Reds and Braves. They need to win at least two series to have a chance, and they cannot afford to get swept by anybody. I'm still a bit anxious.

i think the years of losing have made you paranoid. seems like the are in pretty good shape to me. i mena even if you lose those series, i cant see them getting swept in all of them. so win 3 there, you have to go .500 against the bad teams. very doable. have faith, yopur pirates aren't going to let you down this year

It ain't paranoia if it's true. The party's over. Here comes consecutive losing season #20. If they give us another August/September collapse in 2013, then the losing season streak can legally purchase alcohol.

I would ask people to wake me up when the Pirates have a winning record in August, but with my luck, they'll only do that after ****ing up from April through July. Instead, I'll ask people to wake me up when they're 25 games over .500 at the end of July. It's about the only way I'll feel safe.

Once is an accident. Twice is a trend.

It's a nice story, but I'd rather have the Phillies make the playoffs. If/when the Phillies are in safe in the wild card, the Pirates can win as many games as they need/please.

Obviously not winning a World Series for that long is awful but at the same time, Cubs fans have at least had their team make the playoffs, and be relevant, the past 20 years

Maybe I should have been less broad and ask is their a more tortured generation of American sports fan than the generation Y Pittsburgh Pirates fans. We have no memories of good baseball, 1992 is too far in the past. I was 3 when that season began.

The Cubs and Blue Jays fans can at least recall half decent baseball.

No, Pirates fans are not the most tortured because they have the Steelers. Most tortured fans are Cleveland fans.

If it helps it seems a popular belief amongst Cubs fans that we're *years* behind that team.

not really. prates fans doesn't mean pittsbrugh, it means the pirates. all purates fans are not steelers fans, so the connection to clevleand doesn't work. pirates vs indiains, its pirates no contest
