View Full Version : Cuban: 'No chance' Mavs retire Jason Kidd's number

Mark Cuban is so bitter about Jason Kidd’s departure from Dallas that the Mavericks’ owner says there is “no chance” of ever raising the point guard’s No. 2 to the American Airlines Center rafter.

“I was more than upset,” Cuban said. “I thought he was coming. I was pissed. …

“J. Kidd is a big boy; he can do whatever he wants. But you don’t change your mind like that. That was … yeah. I’m sure I’ll get over it at some point, but as of now, I wouldn’t put J. Kidd’s number in the rafters.”

“He’s a good guy, but I just thought that was wrong,” Cuban said. “You can’t put a guy’s number in the rafters when he decides he doesn’t want to be there.”

On the other hand, Cuban said he would consider retiring the No. 31 worn by Jason Terry, who signed with the Boston Celtics this summer after the Mavs declined to match a three-year, midlevel-exception offer. Cuban praised Terry for being “honest” and “straightforward” throughout the free agency period.

“Putting somebody up in the rafters, that’s something sacred in my mind,” Cuban said. “You don’t just do it just to do it, to have a big ceremony, to sell tickets. You haven’t seen me decide yet. I go back and forth on Derek Harper all the time, but Harp will be up there before J. Kidd will.

“I’ve always said my prerequisite was that you played on a championship team for the Mavs. I’d say Jet’s got a shot, Dirk’s an obvious, but as of right now I wouldn’t put J. Kidd up there.”

A little shocked Cuban is acting like this, though I probably shouldn't be.

Kidd's best years were with the Suns and Nets anyway.

How bout Cuban pays his dues to harper AND aguirre before thinking on players who have not retired?

Cuban sucks. But it's not like Kidd was doing great things there. The Nets should retire his number.

How is this news? Kidd was a role player there, even if he was part of their championship. Guys like Blackman, Aguirre, and even Harper should be acknowledged well before Jason freakin Kidd.

Why would the mavs even consider that. His jersey should be retired by the nets though.

Cuban is right. Kidd changed his mind because Cuban didn't answer his phone call when he was out with his family

Dang, give him a couple hours to return your call! He was with his family and it was one of those times he rarely got a chance to not focus on his businessrs

Its not like Knicks offered more money. It was the same amount of money

The Nets and Suns would retire his jersey before Mavs would

llull, J-Kidd is the only starting PG in Mavs History to get that ingrate Cuban a championship for his franchise. Plus, J-Kidd actually started his career with the Mavs in '94-95 when Cuban didn't even own the Mavs yet. :laugh2:

If it wasn't for Kidd, Cuban would still be stuck with Devin Harris as his starting PG.

Lol People don't realize that he was just a role-player like somebody else said, and also Cuban can say whatever he wants he's a billionaire and he OWNS THE TEAM!

The reason this is notewrothy is because it appears that Cuban made his remarks out of spite. Given the fact that he SAYS he is happy with how it turned out, and that he is a billionaire and team owner, he just kind of comes off as a whiny kid who didn't get what he wanted.

I think Cuban should let the fans decide who gets a jersey in the rafters. And if the fans somehow overlook someone (e.g., Derek Harper) then he should weigh in and decide who gets the honor.

But it's his team. Do what you like, Cuban. It's not like your vision is automatically directed to the ceiling when you go to that arena anyway.

Cuban should know better. In an industry where loyalty is scarce, everyone (including the owners) is out to maximize their income and although new york offered the same contract, the market size and exposure is vastly larger than dallas.

This is business not a marriage.

But you can tell Cuban cares about his team. How many owners really care about their team?

Yep, that and the fact that some people would actually prefer to live in NY than in Dallas. I know I would.

Should be retired in Phoenix.

But at least Cuban should be grateful that his Mavs were able to get a ring with the core that included JKidd.

LULZ, Tyson Chandler and Marion and whoever started at SG were the only starters at those position to win a title for Cuban. Should they retire the entire starting lineup?

Cuban is right not to retire Kidd's number, he was a good player for the Mavs' title run, but nothing more. Although his justification makes him seem petty.

the nets should retire jason kidd jersey. he made them relevant and is one of the reasons why they got a bigger and better arena now

#4 Finley has an even better chance than Kidd

I agree but I'm not even certain Finley's jersey should be in the rafters either. Same goes for Aguirre. It should be a very exclusive group so I wouldn't blame Cuban if he never puts in Harp either. Dirk and Terry are the only guarentees in my opinion.

LTBabby or whatever said Jason Kidd wont have his jersey retired as a Net only as a Mav...when the case is the opposite.

I wouldnt hoist that wife-beater's jersey up in my rafters either.

sharqstealth

Whether to retire him or not, Cuban shouldn't have said that, he's obviously bitter about it. He should've understand, he made this mess by himself after making the team from championship caliber to a team who might miss the playoffs...

Kidd likes to explore different options all the time, he loves to switch teams. He obviously feels that Mavs let Terry go, and didnt get Deron so he feels like NYKs are in a better position to win. And Kidd doesnt want to retire on a non playoff team.

They shouldn't retire it either. Only Dirk needs his number retired. Also did Kidd also not wear #5 as well?
