stats... No one player wins a ring..Ask Lebron... If you have a guy putting up numbers you can build around that... How can you even measure this though... If someone is not filling up the stat sheet do they win rings? Who?

the better question is from an owners perspective.

do you want a player who puts fans in the stands or wins championships?

they all want fans in the stands but some value a championship more than others. cuban wants rings, as do other owners. some owners do it purely for profit though. a ring would be nice in their eyes, but they view the franchise as something to make them profit and have no feelings toward the club. just my opinion i guess.

Seriously though, if a player is good enough to single-handedly win a ring I would guess he has what it takes to fill up some stats on both sides of the ball and be in mvp contention.

While basketball is definitely the easiest sport for 1 individual player's impact to be felt, still cant do it completely by himself.

That said, the two usually go hand in hand, a player with great stats is usually going to bring you wins.

Andrew32
08-16-2012, 01:43 PM
What is stone cold clutch mean?

Great scorers don't stop being great scorers at certain times of the game and if they do they are chokers.

overall performance / impact >>> imaginary clutchness

I'll take the better player who performs the best overall and gives my team the best chance to win.

No player has been good enough to go one on five and win a championship. Wilt came close though.

hey, we all love AI but he put up more stats than anything. He only went to the finals once and that's with Dike Mtombo. Lebron single handedly brought the cavs to the finals. He's a champion. A true champion.
would a better comparison be Melo to Dwane Wade? Since you hate the knicks so much?

just wondering what you guys would rather have. would you ratehr have a player who can rack up points, assists, and rebounds and wins multiple MVP's, or one that is stonecold clutch and gets your team rings?

What's with the zero sum question?

The Lakers have players that have done both. You won't find many significant statistical categories that don't feature a Laker listed in the top 20 spots. You won't see many "Best Players of All Time" lists created that don't feature at least one Lakers player in the top 5; multiple Lakers, in fact, will appear in the top 20, assuming the list is created by a rational mind.

So if you ask me, I want both.

But if I could only choose one, championships matter more to me as a fan of an organization. After all, this is a team sport. If I wanted to support just 1 player, and gush over his stats all damn day, I'd follow golf or tennis exclusively. No thanks!

Hell, if you can find one player that will win you rings, you'd be CRAZY not to prefer that over a stat-sheet filler. One player being that good would be nuts...and I'm sure he'd fill the stat-sheet just fine.

If you're asking whether I'd rather have a Robert Horry-type player or an Allen Iverson-type player, I'm going with the AI-type. Still, neither will do you any good unless you have the right pieces set in place around them.

true but Wilt won 4 chips...

Wilt never won 4 titles, he only won two and if i'm correct he won them both after Russell retired or just one.

Either way this comparison is better due because Wilt was putting up amazing stats, while Bill was winning the championships and beating Wilt at the same time.

1967, Conference Finals, Wilt's Philadelphia 76ers ended Russell's Celtics' 8 straight titles. The 76ers that yr went on to the NBA Finals and Beat Wilt's former team, the San Francisco Warriors (formerly known as the Philadelphia Warriors, now known as the GOlden Staten Warriors). So yes, Wilt won a championship while Russell was still playing, and was the reason the Celtics 8 yr title run ended.

He won his other championship with the '72 Lakers that had West and Goodrich, beating the Knicks in the Finals.

If that one player is getting you rings, then he is undoubtedly also filling up the stat sheet and contending for the MVP perennially. Unless you mean a piece to put the team over the top, but then it means the player is being included into a good team, where the statistically advantageous player will thrive and rings will be acquired anyway.

Assuming they are on a good team, the only players that fit the second description are role players like Robert Horry. And the first description likely applies to a LeBron James-type. If there is any hesitation in choosing who you would rather have, then there isn't much hope for you.
