View Full Version : How good do you see Andre Drummond being?

Alot of people have seen Drummond in the summer league get pushed around and have a disappointing season for UCONN but others point to his size and athleticism. Will he be a top-10 center or a bust?

EDUTEXANS

he can be even better than Okafor, he has crazy potential, but it's too soon to tell anything about him, he needs to work a lot and we will noo probably see how good (or bad) he is until the season after next

I think he will be similar to DeAndre Jordan but with a better offensive skill set....If he's like Okafor I would consider him a bust.

40% Emeka Okafor
50% Backup/ out of the league

Its all based on attitude if he gets it together he could be great

I voted "next Omeka Okafor", but I don't think he'll be "the next" version of either of those guys. He may be a bust, but even if he is I REALLY doubt he'll be as bad as Thabeet. He could turn into a serviceable role player like Okafor, but he could also be quite a bit better than that.

He's already has the athleticism so it's all mental whether he decides to put in the training and work to get better and the confidence to use those skills to be a good player.

He's young and has room to grow. He's going to need minutes and having Greg Monroe next to him will make his situation even better. Monroe is young too but he knows how to work and has improved to be one of the better young bigs in the league.

I think Detroit has some questions to answer this upcoming season. I know they have Prince and a few more veterans who want to win but I would consider getting Drummond 25 to 28 minutes a game and split his time playing with and without Monroe. If both bigs develop and become good players, they'll turn out to be what Oden and Aldridge should have been (a good 1 - 2 punch inside).

Reminds me of Dwight Howard, doubt he'll be that good, maybe. I feel he can be a top 5 center.

AndyfromNeptune
08-02-2012, 01:37 PM
Drummond isn't really similar at all to Emeka Okafor. And furthermore, Okafor wasn't a bust at all. When he was younger, he was one of our best defensive front court players in the league.

Drummond has the potential of Howard and the bust potential of Kwame Brown.

I think he'll be a DeAndre Jordan type player in the end.

Jays Claw
08-02-2012, 01:43 PM
He's a definite project and needs a while to fully develop as a serviceable big. Seems like he's got a great attitude so I guess it's really up to Detroit to invest and take the time to make him into what he can potentially be. Remember after a few months Memphis gave up on Thabeet (I still don't know why - they should've known he was going to be a huge project) just like that. So let's hope Drummond doesn't experience the same fate as Thabeet.

Since we finished playing in Summer League, I’ve spent most of my time here finding my way around and trying to find a place to live. I’ve never lived in a house before. It was a whole new thing for me to have a real estate agent and have them show you like 50 different houses before we found one we really liked. My mother, little sister and I have always lived in an apartment, so it was fun just seeing the smile on my sister’s face knowing she can have her own room now.

It’s close to The Palace, some of my teammates live around there and it’s a good living environment. It’s going to be a good place for my little sister to grow up.

She’s definitely excited to move here. Ariana did what I did – she went to a boarding school, so she’s used to being away from home. We went to the same school for a while – when I was a freshman, she was in eighth grade. I think she and my mom have found a new school for her and she’s looking forward to getting started. She plays volleyball and softball, so I went to a lot of her games throughout my college season. I just try to be her biggest supporter.

I stayed in Orlando for another week after Summer League to help my Uncle Phil coach the AAU team that I used to play for. I was just there last summer playing for his team and now I’m in the NBA. It was just good seeing some of the faces of the guys I was teammates with. We would always pick up some younger kids just to get them acclimated to the new environment and now some of those kids will be heading off to college soon. It was good to coach them – to see how much better they have gotten – and give them some of my pointers after being in college for a year. It was good to be down there with them.

I said when the Pistons drafted me that it felt like a family here in Detroit and I feel that way even more now. I’ve gotten real close to Jordan Dumars, Joe’s son, since the draft. We hang out every day and he shows me around Detroit, some of the areas where we can get food and some of the fun places I can take my mom and my little sister.

I know I’ve seen Jordan before the Pistons drafted me. I don’t know if I’d ever played against him in AAU, but he’s a real good kid. He has a good head on his shoulders. He’s one of those good people you need in your circle to help you become a better player and a person. Just hanging around with Joe and the coaching staff has also been great. I got real close with Jason Hervey, as well – he’s our new player development director. It’s really like a family now.

I’ve been working out with Arnie Kander and Roy Rogers a whole lot since I’ve been here in Detroit. Roy says don’t try to kill yourself, we’re still early, but he says he sees the fire in my eyes when I’m playing. When I’m out there, I just want to get better every single day – get better in a certain area every day and try to push myself. Roy says to relax, my time is going to come.

The thing about me is I try to do big things before I do the small stuff. Being around Arnie and Roy, they tell me the big stuff will come after you get the small stuff down first. We’ve been working on my footwork and getting my jump hook higher, getting my jump shot right. I’m now starting to see that the little things add up to help get the big things right.

Arnie is the best trainer I’ve seen my entire life and I haven’t been here even three weeks yet. He knows what he’s talking about. Some people, you ask them questions and they look stuff up, but he knows it right there and then. I came in and he had a magazine-sized stack of papers with the stuff I did wrong and some of the things I was good at. He had studied some of the games I played and he had critiqued my stride and the way I shoot my shot – how my left hand is on the ball – and he broke down my entire game and helped me out a lot, just changing my game around. He sees stuff that I wouldn’t even think about looking at. He looks at all those small things I was talking about.

I’m going to be here for the rest of the summer, just getting really acclimated to the new area, working out every day and getting close to my teammates, Kim English and Khris Middleton and all the other guys who are coming in. I worked out with Brandon yesterday, getting a feel for each other on pick and rolls and things like that. It’s been a great experience so far, from the draft and Summer League and now getting really settled here and getting to know the people and the places. It’s great to be a Detroit Piston.

He'll need time to develop into an NBA-caliber player. He definitely has the athletic ability (as another post pointed out FAR more than Okafor and Thabeet) which brings lots of potential. All depends on how hard he works. I would love to see a Monroe/Drummond frontcourt battle Robinson/Cousins in the future if both rookies could be anywhere near their full potential.

if he'll have a Kobe-esque work ethic and dedication, he'll have a chance to become a really good player in the league.

but for now, he's really raw. Piston's should give this kid ton of time for him to develop.

He was decent - not even close to bust-worthy. Also, Summer League don't mean **** - lol

I really like this kid and think he can be a special hybrid of Howard and Bynum. I've seen enough flashes of excellent athleticism with some crazy skills in the kid. The way he makes moves and explode to the basket can be unstoppable if he works hard at refining his skill and developing consistency. Defensively I think he can be a hybrid of Jordan and Perkins. Worse case scenario he'll likely be a real good post defender and rim protector.

Kwame Brown had similar or bettter stat lines in summer leagues.

But if you actually watched his play you'd see that he isn't like Kwame. I don't think he'll ever be considered an offensive contributor but I'm thinking he has potential to be a Marcus Camby type of player. No I'm not talking about old *** Camby of today. I'm talking 10 pts, 12 rebounds, 3.5 blocks a game Camby. Those 10 points will be efficient too because they will be putback dunks and transition dunks.

Who cares? Hes the most raw prospect from the draft, why are people putting so much stock into summer league? Everybody knows its going to take him years to break out, but he has the potential to be the next Dwight Howard.

It's hardly debatable at all.

In Jordan's four seasons...
6.0 pts, 6.4 rbs, 1.5 blk, 64% FG, 44% FT

In Okafor's first four seasons...
14.3 pts, 10.8 rbs, 2.0 blk, 49% FG, 60% FT

Jordan outlobs Okafor, but Okafor was (and is) more capable of creating his own shot, or at least of hitting from up to 15 feet. More capable of pretty much everything else, actually.

It's silly to even call it "debatable".
