Which tandem would be more cohesive together if paired? Magic running showtime with Shaq or Kobe down low with the Captain?

Shaq's lazy self wouldn't want to run up and down the court all game

I think Magic/Shaq would win because of Magic's pass-first attitude and his size. Kobe would be hard to stop, as would Cap's sky hook. But Shaq is unstoppable in the post with a single defender, and I just don't see how Kobe keeps Magic from doing whatever he wants.

i would pick kobe but its hard to go against shaq in his prime. we seem what shaq did to the mutumbo"s, yao's,ect. kareem wouldnt be no different.

Pair Kobe with any DETERMINED player, and it'll work.

First off, Magic and Shaq don't fit together at all. Second, Kobe can hit outside and Magic can't. Third, Kobe and Cap can play fast or slow. Plus, both in their prime were far better defenders than Magic and Shaq.

This wouldn't even be close IMO.

It's funny you mention Magic's outside shooting. I had this memory that he got pretty good at the end of his career -- meaning before he retired the first time -- and I think stats confirm it.

Magic hardly ever shot 3's until 88-89, then had the following percentages:

88-89: .314
89-90: .384
90-91: .320

http://espn.go.com/nba/player/stats/_/id/2334/magic-johnson

That's fairly comparable to a lot of Kobe's years (career .337):

I think that's one of the things I always like about Magic most, and about Kobe as well: they never stopped trying to improve their game.

Ooohhh, good topic. Magic/Shaq by the slimmest of margins if you go with the Orlando Shaq which unfortunately we hardly ever saw while he was with the Lakers. Magic would've been as fed up with Shaq as Kobe was if he was the Lazy Shaq. Lazy Shaq was hardly in shape. However, I think Magic would have slapped Lazy Shaq upside the head upon hearing his "when you feed the big dog, he'll do whatever you want him too..." line. Magic had the charisma to do so.

gotta go...finish post later

I gotta be honest I like the idea of pairing Kobe and Kareem.

Very tough call. It feels odd to say this, but shaq is the weak link here. Shaq's laziness puts whoever has him between magic and kobe at a key disadvantage. Although Kobe is more skilled than Magic, I don't see the chemistry being as great for kobe and kareem as for magic and kareem.

I would be happy with either duo. That's all I'm sayin.

Depends on whether we're talking about the level of each player when he was in his respective duo. If so, then Magic and Shaq, easily. Magic would make sure Shaq would get fed, and unselfishness from one of your best players is infectious and energizing. Shaq and Magic enjoyed the public spotlight and joking around, so I think they would have gotten along just fine, although I think Kobe would have enjoyed being around the stoic Kareem. The deciding factor wouldn't really be the scoring output from the duos, but from the utilization of the team's other players. Magic wins handily in this regard.

Kobe and KAJ easily. Shaq wouldn't get out in transition and Magic wasn't as good of a scorer as Kobe. KAJ hit over 70% of his free throws and had an unstopable shot with the skyhook. KAJ was always behind the break. It was Worthy, Coop and Scott on the break with Magic.

As great as Shaq was he was a late game liability because he didn't have the range of KAJ and couldn't be relied on to hit late game free throws. Teams were going to foul him before he could dunk in the last 2 minutes. He even had to get benched at times to avoid hack a shaq.

Both teams had fitting role players. KAJ was slow due to age, but if the fast break didn't score he gave LA a half court game. Shaq dominated for the first 45 minutes then needed someone like Kobe to help close games.

If we're talking about prime years then I'm going with the KAJ-Kobe tandem.

But... pre-Laker Shaq-Magic tandem.

I would actually rather have a magic-kobe duo. Kobe would average like 40 ppg and magic would average like 20 assist per game.
