View Full Version : Red Sox trying to trade Beckett

NEW YORK -- Two days before Tuesday's trading deadline, all appeared quiet on the Red Sox front, although one major league executive insisted Sunday night that the team is looking for a buyer for starting pitcher Josh Beckett.

"They're trying to dump him,'' the executive said, "but I don't think anyone would touch him without a big discount.''

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington downplayed the possibility of the team trading Beckett on Friday in an interview with Boston sports radio station WEEI.

"Taking Josh Beckett off this team is not necessarily improving things," Cherington said. "We need to add, we need to improve the rotation, if anything -- improve internally or add to the rotation. I think we're sort of stuck in neutral if we start taking guys out of the rotation that are good major league pitchers."

As a 10/5 player -- 10 years in the big leagues, at least five with the same team -- Beckett has the right to veto any deal.

The Red Sox also are shopping outfielder Ryan Sweeney, the source said.

Beckett, 5-9 with a 4.57 ERA in 17 starts this season, is scheduled to face Detroit ace Justin Verlander on Tuesday night in Fenway Park.

The Red Sox had a scout in Miami to watch Marlins right-hander Josh Johnson, who walked six against the Padres on Sunday afternoon, which did little to enhance his trade value.

Johnson, Matt Garza of the Cubs and James Shields of the Rays seem to be the best potential starters available in a deal, but it would appear that the Red Sox are not prepared to surrender the quality of prospects required to acquire Johnson, and Garza has a triceps issue that will prevent him from making another start before the deadline.

Johnson also has a history of past shoulder problems, and the last thing the Red Sox would seem to need is another high-priced veteran with health issues.

Manager Bobby Valentine, asked about the Red Sox's intentions before the deadline, said, "I think that this organization is in it to win it all the time. I don't think ownership and the front office is thinking anything other than, 'We've got a shot.'"

That would seem to rule out the Red Sox trading such players as Cody Ross, Kelly Shoppach or Matt Albers, who would all potentially have value to a contender. Cherington already has ruled out trading pitcher Jon Lester or outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury.

When he is on, i think he is our best pitcher. Unfortunately he is rarely on for more than 3 or 4 innings and when he is off, he gets shelled :(.

For what it's worth, per fWAR, Beckett's in between Weaver and Darvish this year. That's pretty good value if you ask me, he's been unlucky with runners on base. His LOB% this year is atrocious.

Walks have killed our pitchers and they are just leaving pitches over the plate to many times and are getting hurt, alot.

Red sox were/are talking to the exact 2 teams we were speculating about (texas/atlanta), watch out, each of these teams could get desperate soon.

The Red Sox have made calls to the Braves and Rangers within the past 48 hours in an attempt to dump Josh Beckett, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports. Passan adds that the Red Sox began talks with the Rangers and Braves because they believe Beckett would waive his 10-and-5 rights to play for either team. While the Dodgers have yet to receive a call on Beckett, they're one team that could potentially be interested in the right-hander, according to Passan (all Twitter links).

There are several potential roadblocks to a Beckett trade. In addition to his 10-and-5 rights, Beckett's performance has slipped (4.57 ERA, 6.8 K/9, 2.4 BB/9) and he has a prohibitive contract status. He's in the second year of a four-year contract that pays him $15.75MM annually. Passan notes in this fourth tweet that Beckett's market is largely dependent on how much salary the Red Sox are willing to eat. He's owed approximately $37.3MM over the remainder of the contract.

Earlier tonight, both Jon Heyman of CBS Sports and Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com reported that the Red Sox were looking to move Beckett. The Braves and Rangers have both been linked to nearly every starting pitcher available on the trade market this summer, but it's not known what kind of interest either club would have in Beckett.

They should have tried to trade him, right after last years downfall. Trying to trade him 2 days before the deadline? WTF? No deal is gonna get done before deadline, They probably end up putting him on waivers, and once he goes unclaimed , then they can trade him.

The Rangers make sense as they don't appear to be going for Josh Johnson due to the outrageous asking price and they lost out to the Angels in acquiring Grienke.

Beckett for Napoli lol. I'm tired of Napoli killing the Red Sox ;)

According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Red Sox are now "unlikely" to trade Josh Beckett.

Olney says the Red Sox talked to a "small handful of teams about him" but found no offers to their liking. Beckett is owed a total of $31.5 million in salary over the next two seasons and has posted a 4.57 ERA in 17 starts this year. It's doubtful Boston got any great offers.roto

Well if they're covering almost all of his salary which has been reported as what would need to happen, then you can't just settle for a "c" spec. Cause Then you're still playing for Beckett to play and you're receiving nothing out of it.

Wave the red flag, take back the single worst spec the other team has and try to give back less then $8M to slide him out of the door.

That's 5-7, 3.45ERA with losses in two quality starts and three starts of 7IP/4ER. With the offense the Sox have, his record in these games could easily be 9-3 or 10-2. As a top of the rotation pitcher he MUST find a way to win those games but it's reasonable to say that he's had a pretty good season with a few crappy games and poor run support. His contract is too expensive but dealing him for a couple of good prospects is not unreasonable.

T-28th FIP (all pitchers); T-11th FIP (AL only)

he has the 8th lowest LOB% of all pitchers - 66.2%. the 7 pitchers who have lower percentages than him?- romero, guthrie, hochevar, minor, santana, lester, and lincecum.

for his career he has a 71.9 LOB%. his FIP of 3.52 compared to his ERA of 4.57 shows that he has been very unlucky this year. and he is still the sox best pitcher. to trade him for a crappy prospect would be stupid.

Your exactly right, it would be idiotic to just trade him for anything, and right now I don't think he will be traded. I just do not like Beckett's demeanor about everything from the whole golf thing and the chicken and beer. The fans, the people who pay his salary, deserve an apology even if he doesn't believe he did wrong. It seems like he doesn't care when he is getting shelled on the mound in games. I want him to show emotion if he gives up a homerun or do a Chapman roll after K'ing the side in an inning. If he could change that, I to think he is still the best, if not 2nd best pitcher on the team. And when Beckett is at his best he is a top 5 pitcher in the league.

They wouldn't though, because that's ridiculous. Why would we want to trade Beckett when his value is so low, when we would have to pay most of his salary just to facilitate a trade, and get back a low prospect that wouldn't even have a great chance at helping us at any point. I'd rather just keep a guy that will probably (hopefully) be motivated here and at least has it in him to be a stopper.

There are teams looking that have the financial means to acquire him - The Rangers, Dodgers, Braves, Mets even. I mean.. AJ friggen Burnett ended up in Pittsburgh, and nobody saw that coming.

Ultimately I really hope it gets done, and I don't care what the Sox get in return.

I would much rather see this team go through the rest of 2012, and even be competitive, with a rotation of Lester, Buchholz, Doubront, Matsuzaka (who's on rehab), and Cook - There are arms that could factor in down the stretch: Chris Hernandez, Zach Stewart, Nelson Figueroa, Duckworth, Buckner, et al.

Yeah, but he just doesn't want to come out and say "Yes, we are trying very hard to trade Beckett," because if Josh was to not get traded, there would be even more tension in the clubhouse.

Does moving Beckett mend the baseball v. business ops divide? No....

I'm in favor of moving JB -- I just don't think shipping him off 'fixes' the organization.... The problems are much deeper than one player IMO.

Given a choice between moving on from Beckett or Lucchino, I choose the latter.

To follow up on RST's excellent post, I'd also like to point out that Beckett has been very unlucky with men on-base this year. So far his LOB% this season is 66.2% compared to that of his career mark of 71.9%. That is a huge difference. While his ERA, currently at 4.57, might seem high, His FIP is a whole run lower at 3.52.

One concern about Beckett is that his K% and K/9 are both easily the worst marks of his career. It could be due to decline in his FB velocity, putting more balls in play or simply not executing in 2 strike counts.

However, he's still been very valuable, to this date he's been worth 2.5 fWAR. That is tied with Weaver and Darvish, so regardless of his "struggles", he's still been a very valuable pitcher. Should his LOB% improve to his career mark going forward, expect Beckett to finish the season with better numbers than any of us could've ever anticipated.

A lot of our pitchers have struggled with 2 strike counts, which could not just be the pitchers, but the catchers or whoever is calling the pitches.

of course he is, other teams fail to get the reason why we wanna get rid of him. He's still a valuable pitcher and he could easily rebound next year (odd-numbered year) or even for the rest of this season. Texas would be a much better club with Beckett in the rotation. And I doubt he would have much (bad) influence in a new clubhouse, he'd be the "new guy".

If I was fan of the Rangers or Braves, I'd be pissed if they did nothing to bolster their rotation, especially because the biggest contender for the division got one of the best pitchers in the game.

I really just hope we get a few prospects for Sweeney, Shop, Albers or Cook or a combo of any of those.
