Combining both bigman spots, where would you rank them as defenders?

If your not comfortable talking about players you didnt see much then dont go too far back, if you feel you know enough about certain players then feel free to go way back.

Top 5, Top 10, Top 20. However deep you want to go.

Duncan and Garnett could guard both positions well.

I don't think he's talking about tandems. Just the big men who can guard both the 4 and 5 position greatly.

Anyways off the top of my head:

PF: Garnett, Duncan, Rodman.
C: Wallace, Dwight, Robinson, Russell, Wilt, Hakeem, KAJ.

Ibaka, Chandler right now.

Not talking about tandems, though that is an interesting subject. Im only talking about individual PF and Centers.

Like clump Rodman, D-Rob, Duncan, Zo, Ben, Dream, Wilt, Nate etc.... all into the same pile and rank them as defenders INDIVIDUALLY

Nate Thurmond. Chamberlain said no one guarded him better than Thurmond and you knows that's high praise because Wilt faced off against Russell all the time.

i expect to see alot of chandler camby on floor together.. thats gonna be sick.. i dont know if stat has it in him to bring his d to a level that would make them a great combo...

hakeem 'the dream' olajuwon and its not even close. he could guard pretty much anybody on the floor. all time blocks leader, top 10 steals, and 11th all time rebounder.

Confusing. Is it the special defenders who could defend both positions or just separate categories (like best PF defenders and best center defenders)?

For me it goes like this:

Center: Russell
PF: Rodman
Both positions combined: Hakeem

Korman12
07-30-2012, 03:06 AM
Wilt, Russell, Kareem, Hakeem, Ewing, Robinson, Rodman, Garnett, Duncan, Wallace, Dwight.

Right now: Dwight, Chandler, Garnett, Ibaka

I think Serge Ibaka is a good defender. I think he defends good. He blocks a lot of shots. I think that is good defense.

I know this isn't the intent of the thread, but even considering Stat is inherent homerism. Tyson is a very good defender, but he's not good enough to compensate for Stat and make that the best tandem in the league.

Why would Amare even be mentioned? Dude couldn't defend a post out in the yard.

Chandler is great for 5s and some 4s.
Ibaka, Gortat, I feel like that Dwight Howard guy is a suitable defender of 4s & 5s as well.

I don't think Amar'e should ever be in discussion for being a good defender. Help defense is/was his best trait on that side of the ball but nowhere near enough to be in this discussion.
Chandler I do agree with though. That was a big reason he won with Dallas.

Hakeem and KG

Duncan can be considered for both.

Any list of Cs without the names BILL RUSSELL, Hakeem Olajuwon and Nate Thurmond is completely wrong IMO.

Many of the all-timers have been mentioned. As far as the current mix, Josh Smith and Ivan Johnson are undersized but still put in work on the defensive end this season -- that was a huge reason the Hawks won in spite of all the injuries.

C'mon dude. Lets try to be realistic...

Current Players:

KG, Chandler, Howard, Duncan (prime),

Former players:
Rodman, The Dream, D. Robinson, Zo, Russell, etc too many to name.

In his prime I always felt Camby was a better defender than Chandler ever was, I put him only slightly behind Wallace, Duncan and KG.

From a long time fan of Marcus Camby I can certainly tell you that he is no where near Wallace, Duncan or KG and even Chandler is a much better defender in every sense of the word than Camby, whether it be interior, individual or help Chandler at his best is just better. Camby was and porbably still is however a better shot blocker. There is a huge difference.

I don't disagree with you ranking Thurmond high on this list but to assume Wilt had no ulterior motives when making that statement would be naive.

Maybe but KAJ cosigned, he may have had his own agenda as well (vs Wilt) but the stats support them. Still thats 1 on 1 post defense, which is in itself an important measure. But when you factor in team defense, is he still among the best?

Gun to my head I'd probably have to replace Thurmond with Garnett. Dwight Howard was the hardest to rank because he's not nearly as battle tested as any of the other great defenders from my list.

Thats my main focus here. KG has him in longevity for sure tho.
