View Full Version : Predict the 2016 U.S. Men's Olympic basketball Team

mrblisterdundee

You'll have to assume that players who are still in college will not be on the team, but try to predict, based on age, skill level and usual career arc, who will make up the 2016 U.S. Men's Olympic basketball team.

PG: Derrick Rose (27), Russell Westbrook (27), Chris Paul (31)
SG: Eric Gordon (27), Stephen Curry (28), Tyreke Evans (26)
SF: LeBron James (31), Kevin Durant (27)
PF: Kevin Love (27), Blake Griffin (27)
C: Dwight Howard (30), DeMarcus Cousins (25)

This squad would demolish the 2012 team. Hopefully everybody remains healthy at the right time.

I still think Kobe Bryant would be able to make the team along with Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, and John Wall.

Way too early to tell, but I could see guys like Irving and T-Rob and Davis on there. Beal's another that may be there as well. There are also talks going around that the next Olympics will only be 23 and under for basketball or at least for the USA team.

AndyfromNeptune
07-29-2012, 11:46 AM
Possibly Marshon Brooks as well as Iman Shumpert--remember a lot of the time the veterans and guys in contract years choose not to play.

In terms of the front court, I could see Love, Davis, Cousins, and Howard all getting a good amount of minutes--maybe Brook Lopez as well.

sorry this is dumb, its way to early. in 4 years Anthony Davis can be coming of a championship and be the best pf in the game. Bradley Beal can be a top 3 SG. A guy from next years draft can be coming off a near mvp season. there is way too much to see in the next 3 years.

You're missing Harden and Kyrie.

Tyreke? :laugh2:

Solid list otherwise.

Yea; Tyreke. They're basically the same type of player - same playing style, same age, same weight, 1 inch in height difference, both combo guards who often play the point - and you can't come up with any argument as to why he isn't as good as if not better than Harden. The only reason they wouldn't both be on there is the limited number of roster spots. And yes; they're the best we have after Kobe and Wade, who will both be too old to make the team, especially since the Americans are trending towards taking younger players.

mrblisterdundee
07-29-2012, 06:58 PM
LOL Davis is on the 2012 and he doesnt make the 2016 team?

Davis shouldn't have been on the 2012 team, and I don't think he'll be a top-three American power forward in 2016. He's about as big of an Olympic mistake as Christian Laettner.

Pf - griffin, love, a davis
C - cousins, g. Monroe, n Noel (Dwight will spend 2016 trying to be traded somewhere else)

+a college freak.

With age, lack of rest from playoffs, and fact that they fulfill the redemption and win back to back gold the current USA team might not feel the need to go to rio. I tried to put a younger group together with two incoming college freshmen included so maybe this is a fiba world cup team. Hopefully 5'6" aquille Carr will make it!

the team will probably take an elderly statesman as well.

08 had kidd, 12 has bryant.

curious to see who would be that role on the 16 team. coach K wont be running the show but my guess is the coach would use this method as well. my guess would be wade? he would be 34 at the time. no other name comes to mind.

also, im not gonna guess as all right now because 4 years is a long time.

But yet he has been doing good the time he played and I think he is still leading the team with blocks (from the game today and the exhibition games)

Oh wow; Davis is leading the Olympic team in blocks against a bunch of smaller, less athletic teams. The competition level in the Olympics is laughably lower than in the NBA, thus earning your stripes in the NBA should be the precursor to making the Olympic team and basically getting a free ticket to a gold medal.

Actually that's very easy.

Anyways, Kyrie (barring injury) is a lock.

If it's so easy, then come up with an argument. So far, there's nothing that says Harden is better than Tyreke. The only real difference is the teams they play on, and I'm sure the Thunder would me more than happy to have Tyreke. It's easy to look good when you're playing next to Durant and Westbrook.

1/4 of the 2016 team probably isn't in the NBA yet. I'd say the locks for those games, though, would be: LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Kevin Love, Blake Griffin, Derrick Rose, and Kyrie Irving. Guys like D-Will, D-Wade, Dwight Howard, and CP3 would be guaranteed a spot if they want to play.

b@llhog24
07-30-2012, 02:25 AM
If it's so easy, then come up with an argument.

Eh, don't really feel like it. But whatever I'll make it simple for you, Tyreke hasn't improved from since his rookie year (I know about all the injuries and coaching ****) , while Harden has improved every year from his rookie year. Tyreke is the better talent imo, but until he gets a jump-shot he won't be on the same level as Harden.

So far, there's nothing that says Harden is better than Tyreke.

Efficiency begs to differ.

The only real difference is the teams they play on, and I'm sure the Thunder would me more than happy to have Tyreke. It's easy to look good when you're playing next to Durant and Westbrook.

I don't buy it, at times during games, the Thunder run a rotation in which Harden is surrounded by primarily bench players and he still continues to **** on teams despite a serious uptick in his usage rate.

I'm sure the Thunder would love to have Tyreke too, but not ahead of Harden. They did, after all, draft Harden over Tyreke.

How does the NBA have any influence with FIBA? It doesn't make sense, and it angers me how some rich owners can control the rules of an international competition.

I do not have a problem if the United States pushed younger players to play in the 2014 World Cup of Basketball, but in the Olympics, I want the best to represent our country. The USA is the best country in the world for basketball, and it should stay that way.

May start out of respect but won't get significant minutes. Will most likely play in crucial situations. Think of Kidd during the '08 Olympics. ;)
