View Full Version : Why doesn't the NBA enforce a four-limit foul system?

Why give players six fouls a game? Make it four fouls so players don't foul as much. This would ameliorate the game as we now it.

That would make the game stupid. Nobody wants the scrubs finishing out a close game.

Maybe I'm missing something but you RARELY see player fouling out.

Because this league already has enough people allergic to defense with 6 fouls.

If they review every single foul called, then yes.

Congrats on the worst idea ever. They have 6 fouls so guys aren't always in foul trouble and your best players aren't on the bench or fouled out. You think this would stop fouling really? You clearly haven't played basketball.

OP has no idea what he's talking about. Absolutely idiotic idea. If they actually made every call correctly and didn't award players for driving the lane then maybe you could reduce it a bit. But to go with the current foul call standards...there's just no way it would make sense to cut it down to 4 fouls a game. Just a terrible idea...

People don't realize that with my idea the refs would be forced to call less fouls. But people are too blind to see this.

Jesus christ are you ever stupid. You've been voted off the forum

Reffing is already inconsistent enough. We see them afraid to make calls against stars in the 4th quarter already, we don't need it starting in the third quarter.

Fouls allow for the gambling for steal, limiting it to four fouls would cause the game to change so much, no more hard fouling going to the basket because its a 4th of your game for a foul,

6 is perfect, coaches still take out key guys with 2 in the first quarter, and 3 in the second...it adds to the strategy of both teams and keeps it competitive..players aren't fouling out easily and if you did this you'd have 2-3 starters fouling out every game.

One thing I have enjoyed watching recently is Team USA play in the pre-olympic exhibition games. In the International competition the foul limit is five per game, but the refs also let the game get a little more physical.

I have to say that I would definitely be in favor of this format. Less chance of fouls being called and its still like having six fouls because they arent called as often, and the game is more intense and more exciting.

Plus you wouldn't have players complaining over little ticky tack fouls everytime someone breaths too hard on them. I think this would also cut down on complaining and flopping once the players got used to this type of play.

It may be 5 fouls, but they are also playing 8 less game minutes a game.

As long as they dont call the soft fouls, I would still be ok with this. For me though, this comes down to more how the games are officiated. If there were less fouls, maybe it would force the refs to ease back some.

Because teams like Miami would be playing 5on3 in the last quarter.

No one would play Defense if there was 4 fouls. The case can be said make it 7 fouls if the game goes into OT. so if someone gets their 6th foul in OT they are allowed one more. But if they get 6 fouls in the regular quarters then they foul out. I think they should do this for at least the playoffs.

BALLER R
07-25-2012, 10:14 AM
Also players will get 2 fouls in the first quarter usually coaches sit them until the middle of the 2nd quarter. If there are only 4 fouls then guys would sit until the 3rd. You would have stars fouling out by the 3rd.

First of all you didn't explain that earlier so how are we "too blind to see that"?

Secondly UMMMMM still no.

I would like to see it go down to 5.
If the refs let players play on more often by not calling softer than soft fouls the game would have a better flow.

the last 5 minutes of a tight NBA game are so annoying. theres too many calls, fouls and timeouts.

the NBA Game is a total of 48 minutes. does it really need to be 3 hours long? They can easily shorten it to 2 hours, if it wasnt for the networks and commercials. A soccer is 90 minutes long, and 2 hours Air time.

International is 5 over 40 minutes which is 1 per 8 minutes of play which is the same as the nba

really? check the "Miami Heat vs _______" games.

The heat would have the whole league fouled out in the first quarter with all the bogus calls they get...

Thats dumb. You make one foul to prevent a basket, and then get a ticky tac foul and youre in trouble instantly.

LBJ still wouldnt foul out lol.

What made you say that?

I mean, instead of reducing the allowable fouls, shouldn't the refs just call them cleanly? Quality of quantity, bruh.

It's not the players psychology that's at issue. It's the psychology of the refs. If you only have 4 fouls, the refs will call LESS fouls, less often. Otherwise the end result would be games colored by just about every player in foul trouble.

I would like them to include the techs in personals just like in FIBA so that there would be less whining.

dude if you incorporate this crappy rule, Lebron would easily be the second best player of all time after shaq(if the crappy rule was enforced while shaq was playing)
