Ok funny thing is Howson waited all that time for that deal???

Only pulled the trigger because of the Weber signing because Philly wouldn't be able to get Nash if the signing goes through. So he couldn't take a chance he had to get rid of him as soon as he could but it is a good deal we got. Aside of course from his contract but hopefully it all works out.

I am struck by this trade man. I can't believe thats what we gave up for Nash. We also get a third round pick back from a bottom of the tier team. Losing Erixon is the only hurt for me in this trade. I mean he probably would have made the team this year as a 3rd line pair with great potential for a top 4 in the future. But not giving up MDZ or MCD is huge for us.

Can someone project our cap now that Nash is a ranger.

But I had already planned to watch more games this upcoming season and now I'm so ****ing hypedto do so. So if you see me in the game thread asking dumb questions please bare with me. I'm just trying to learn. And Let's Go Rangers!!!!

Not a problem man. The rangers were good before but they liked to make games interesting. We were a top team but we won a lot of games like 2-1. Now with some offence we should be way better.

I still say Doan as a third line player makes up instant cup contenders.

Definitely a steal for the Rangers...

The way the rumors were flying, the Jackets wanted to much in return. Congrat's to Sather for it! However... we were excited when Jagr was a NYR and look what happened to him? We got excited when Brad Richards was a NYR and I hate to say it but I'm not a Richards fan. Simply because him and Dubi were all about $$$. I hope Nash is not all about the $$$

Yeah I know. The Rangers have been pretty good for the most part. I know a little bit about the Rangers. I was 7 when they won it in '94 and I remember watching it with my dad. I remember Messier's guarantee and all that. And I remember Jeff Beukeboom?? because that is just the best name I've ever heard. And I remember Ryan Richter and how he was the man.

I know a little bit about the Rangers. I'm still learning about hockey though. I only know the big names when it comes to players. I know most of the rules but I don't feel I can really watch the game with an analytical eye. And I'm a little iffy on some of the terminology. For instance I'm not really sure what the forecheck is. If someone can run that by me real quick that would be great.

And please tell me more about this Doan fellow and what he brings to the table.

3rd line center spot is open now, don't be surprised if JT Miller makes the team.

Boyle or Halpern will fill the 3rd and 4th line, likely Boyle on the 3rd and Halpern on the 4th. There are spots open, I think maybe Miller and Fast have the best shot at making it.

3rd line center spot is open now, don't be surprised if JT Miller makes the team.

Neither Anisimov nor Dubinsky played consistent center on this team in quite some time...

Boyle is 3rd line and Halpern (he is a faceoff specialist, what we needed) is the 4th line center.

If JT Miller makes the team, it shifts Boyle to 4th line center with Halpern shifting to wing or the other way around, but I don't think JT Miller makes the team out of camp but we may see him some time later in the year unless we give him the classic 8 game tryout near the beginning of the season.

I'm ok without getting Doan now really....I like him but now that we got Nash I see his stock rising and any deal for him is gonna put pressure on future contracts for our younger players.

with 13 mill in cap space we could easily tempt him into a silly one year deal and not have to worry past this season.... we hve the dollars and the cap.. ... same goes for semin.. but id muhch rather doan

Honestly, who the hell wants Semin? Would have maybe not minded on the right deal, considering we were in need of some scoring punch, at worst until Gabby gets back. But now, Semin would be IMO not needed, in which case I'd pass on his inconsistency, whether it be offensively, defensively, or effort-wise(take your pick)...

There's no update on Sauer as of 4 or 5 days ago. They seem to be keeping it to themselves much like they kinda did with Marc Staal. I kinda like that strategy as to guess when someone might be ready to play after a concussion is somewhat hard until training camp starts, and that's if he's able to take part in that. I'm guessing Sauer will relax this offseason and start heavy workouts either before or during training camp and only then will we know if his brain has healed enough to take it to the next level, but from what I got from the last update this could actually be something that keeps him out indefinately.

Bsi, I agree hes the real deal and Im stunned thats all it took to get him. I thought for sure Hags would be going as part of the deal, glad hes not but would not have held the trade up if he was. Sauer was talked about around the draft by some of the beat writers. They said he started his summer work out. They havent said anything about setbacks but not sure they would say it if he did. It was just workouts, it didnt say anything about if it was on ice or off. But usually its off ice for a decent of time without setbacks before on ice. I cant see him getting in games before decemeber. Which he could be a great addition midseason back inform by playoffs like Staal.

considering he was offered much more than that already, and would likely have no problem getting a strong 3 year deal from most of the teams involved, I just don't see it. Likely a 3 for 15 or something in that neighborhood. Don't see him leaving another 7 or so Mil on the table..

Ya, I agree that he'd take a discount to play with a contender but if everyone is right and it was Pitsburgh that offered the 4 year deal he wouldn't likely turn that down, but who knows, maybe it was someone else like the Islanders or something.. I'd like to have him too, especially with Dubinsky gone he'd be someone to replace his abrasiveness, just looking at that 4 year offer it doesn't sound too promising as I think our teams likely length of contract is probably 2 years or less. Nash was a huge addition, everything else would be gravy from here on in.

4 years for Doan is ridiculous. Anyone who gives more than 3 is crazy, and even that is what some might call a reach. If you front load the deal, and give him a small number in the final year, you can always have the escape hatch of a buy out.

Still though, I'd like to have Doan, but I don't like them locking into longer terms with a 36-year old.

Dubinsky carries a cap hit of $4.2 million, Anisimov $1.875 million and Erixon $1.75 million. So the Rangers gave up $7.825 million in salary and took on from $7.8 million to $8.395 million a wash, as Sather put it.

Rick Nash was traded to the New York Rangers for Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, Tim Erixon and a first-round draft pick on Monday. For good measure the Blue Jackets added in a minor-league defenseman and a third-round pick.

With that news, people around the NHL laughed and laughed at Columbus GM Scott Howson again. "That is the return he is getting for Nash? All of that posturing just for those guys? Bahahahaha!" Or something like that.

This is the danger that Howson faced when making his ridiculous demands for months on end. On the surface, I don't think it's an awful deal for the Blue Jackets. Hear me out for a second on this one.

Nash has been an All-Star for his career in Columbus, that much isn't up for dispute. But he also has just one 70-point season in his career thus far and has never won a playoff game, that for a player that's making just shy of $8 million. Seems a little disproportionate. Still, you have to pay for goal-scoring and that's something Nash can do very well ... score.

However Nash is 28 years old. Statistics show time and time again that goal scorers usually peak in their mid-20s. Just going by the standard evolution of players, it's safe to say that Nash has likely hit his peak. That certainly doesn't mean he can't stay around his peak for a few more years, but history points toward a decline for Nash from this point on. That's important to consider.

So getting Dubinsky, Anisimov and a decent defensive prospect in Erixon (along with a draft pick) doesn't seem TOO awful to me in return for Nash.

You absolutely have to take into consideration a few other things here. First, Nash demanded a trade out of Columbus, so Howson didn't have much leverage in that regard. Further, Nash's list of teams that he would accept a trade to diminished Howson's strength in talks even more, especially when you consider that not every team on his reported list was reciprocating the interest in Nash.

Make the argument all you want that the return is a bit underwhelming for Nash. After all, when the best player in a return is even up for debate, it's certainly questionable, I'll grant you that. You would like to see maybe a scorer in return who could help fill the Nash void. Still, I'll maintain on paper it's not a terribly lopsided trade.

But it doesn't look that way for Howson off the paper, not now. After months of posturing that he was waiting for the right trade to come along and asking for the moon and more in trades -- seriously, starting with Jeff Skinner from the Hurricanes? Asking for Chris Kreider, Derek Stepan and more from the Rangers? -- then this is beyond deflating. It's like driving over tire spikes on the freeway and popping all four of your tires at once.

In a way it was admirable of Howson to ask for so much in return. He was trying his best to maintain that he had some leverage in the deal considering Nash was signed for another six years and he didn't have to trade him until the deal was right. However all he was doing was setting himself up for failure in whatever deal he did unless he was somehow magically able to haul in that moon. Well guess what, he failed.

This trade is demoralizing to whatever shred of hope fans in Columbus might have had. After having dreams of Skinner, Stepan and Logan Couture thrown into their heads by Howson as being return prices, they are given some guys that the average Blue Jackets fan has to look up on Hockey-Reference.com.

To make it all worse, this is an offer that Howson could have accepted a long time ago. This was likely a deal that was on the table back in Februrary before the in-season trade deadline and Howson turned it down. Now the perception is that he lost big time as Sather didn't have to raise his offer and Howson appears to have come back to the Rangers with his tail tucked between his legs.

By no means will this trade help Howson erase the perception of him that he is the worst GM in hockey. The guy hardly ever makes a move these days that isn't met with a heavy dose of ridicule from media and fans alike. This is no exception mostly because Howson promised Jackets fans a treasure full of riches, something he could never possibly deliver.

Nyr2002nyr, you make valid points. The problem for Howson besides being a terrible GM in a location that isnt a players hopes to go to so could never add to Nash because they drafted terrible. Now add in a disgruntled All Star with a no movement clause. They never get equal value return. They always want to go to a contender and contenders aren going to give up a ton of value for one player.

Yesterday it was noted that Erixon was added to the trade. If the Rangers were the front runner all along then Dubi/AA and a first was the best offer they got. Maybe Howson feared someone from Philly would cry like Carter did about going there. Trading to Detroit would be crazy watching him play against them 6 times. What did SJ offer, not enough to keep him in the conference. Reasons Ive said to stay in, because they never get equal value.

*Imaginary high five to everyone in the forum*

We have debated the merits of a deal for Nash for close to a year and this is FAR better from our side than any of us could have hoped for.

I know that many people here want no part of him but if the NYR cannot get Doan on a 2yr deal (at age 35 already) I would be interested in Semin on a 2yr $10 total deal ($5mil cap hit) which he has been rumored to be willing to accept. Hes younger, is a 30+ goal scorer and adds additional offensive depth to this team that could absolutely put them over the top. That contract would also allow for financial flexibility for the franchise and does not come with significant long-term risk.

Steve Zipay has also mentioned Jason Arnott on a 1yr deal if we cant get Doan, who had 17g last season and provides that veteran presence down the middle while coming from a team in STL that played almost identical in style to the NYR last season.

I agree. But there is no one that jumps out at you. RFA or UFA. Spacek or Kubina? Big boys with big shots. Staal is coming off a concussion, 1 hit and you never know. Girardi is more of a shut down dman, one of the best. Will Del Zotto remain consistent or become complacent and have another sub-par year like 10-11? I have to believe that our original offer, at the trade deadline, had more youth and less cap numbers going to Columbus.

This trade is an absolute steal for the Rangers, Congrats to Sather for keeping the core and essentially keeping the current cap space with this move. This certainly allows room for re-signing our RFA and adding another piece or two. GREAT WORK!!!!

I can't see them moving MDZ now that Erixon has been traded. That would severely weaken our defense especially with the uncertainty surrounding Sauer. We'd only have 3 sure fire D-men? No thanks.

I agree no way MDZ gets moved, especially for a forward. They didnt move him for Nash, cant see them budging for a different forward. Could he be used for a defenseman, sure but thats unlikely. IMO they are done moving rostered players. Depending what defenseman to play bottom pair in UFA. If They walk from Straalmans decision then maybe move low pick prospect for a bottom defenseman.

While the fourth line may be inefficient we also added a lot of scoring with this trade which was the primary problem in the playoffs. The only addition in essence that was made was the fact that the fourth line is tremendously larger in size than they were previously. If we got doan you have three really good lines that make up for not having a good fourth line. Also Torts won't even play our fourth line anyway because he is a three line coach primarily anyway.

Our biggest problem last year in playoffs is that McDonagh, Girardi, DelZotto and Staal were all overworked and tired because our 3rd pairing couldn't be relied on to carry their minutes on the ice without a minus. There was a game that went into a couple overtimes in playoffs where Girardi had played like 53 minutes or something crazy, and the next game it showed. We need two more reliable D, they don't have to be flashy, they just have to be someone you can put on the ice for 10 or more minutes a game and not be a liability. I don't really know who those players are, but I'm sure Glen is looking as it was a glaring hole on this team and I don't think we have anyone ready in the minors.

Isca92

Bsi, it was Mcdonagh that played 53 minutes. Im pretty sure Girardi played under 50 because that was the game where Hank went to clear the puck and on the follow through clipped Girardi in the nose, which required stitches. Just saying lol. Im fine with resigning Stralman for short term he played fine in the playoffs. Bickels skating ability or lack of is the killer. Only being trusted with max 5 minutes of the game really wears down the other guy. They need to get someone who can play 12-15 minutes and not be a liability.

I think offering Spacek or Kubina a one year deal to shore up our 3rd pair is good. Theyre reliable enough to give you 10-15 minutes a game. Other than that, its pretty slim out there. I also wouldnt mind trading for Paul Mara.

Spacek maybe, not sure about Kubina, he isn't really the most defensively responsible guy around. I think I'm done with Paul Mara too, he was a good player for us a few years ago but things have changed for him.

It is pretty exciting getting a player like Rick Nash. To get Gabs-Richards-Nash in a span of 4 seasons is pretty impressive. We are getting spoiled a bit by Slats and company. Will Rick be wearing #61 here in NY? I think that number may be available. :)

I really had a feeling he'd be in Pitsburgh, but good for Carolina, they're really trying to make their team better, and not doing a bad job of it either.

Thanks for the welcome BSI. That is cool.

Since Nash is 61 he will never have to buy his jersey number from another player. I'm pretty happy to have a big powerful sniper like Nash. Should be fun to watch. How have you been doing? How has the board been? Have I missed any colorful fights? :D

Hey dude. Nice to see you. I do not come on too much but its always nice to see the cool posters on my old board. Are you excited about the Nash trade? Pretty impressive top 5 players on this Rangers team. :)

I sure would like to SLY back and not just a hit and run.

Hey Isca. Whats up dude? I have been spoken with the administrator about coming back a couple of times but I do not think I could do a good job anymore. This board was my favorite board to mod. You guys really spoke about the Rangers/Hockey with intelligence. Not some of the lame nonsense I have seen elsewhere. Out of all the PSD boards this is the one I miss most. :)

Hey Sly, the boards changed alittle since the youve left. I forget who suggested it but instead of doing a game thread for each game here has been a thread for the month keeps the conversation going. There hasnt been as much nonsense with difference in opionions. A few new guys who give their opionions but hasnt been much thats needed to be deleted, just good conversations. Which is why you should come back and comment even if your not being a mod.

I cant wait for next season to start, cant wait to see Nash in Broadway Blue. Hopefully we will see you back sooner then later.

Hey Sly...'a blast from the past'...lol. Soooooo good to hear from you. Absolutely love the Nash trade. Slats should stick to trades and avoid a lot of FA signings. He found his nitch.

Hope to see you around the boards more often. We all miss you
