View Full Version : Waiters already dealing with injury and conditioning issues

Dion Waiters is still dealing with an ankle injury sustained during a workout before the draft.

Waiters averaged 12.3 points on 30 percent shooting during three Summer League games with the Cavaliers.

"I think his week was OK," Byron Scott said. "We all wish he would have played a little bit better and shot the ball better. But we knew he was coming off an ankle injury before he came here and [had] a couple little nagging injuries. He hurt the knee when he went up to dunk, so we held him out as a precautionary move.”

Waiters sat out Cleveland’s final two games as the team finished with a 3-2 record.

"We still feel pretty good about where he is,” Scott said. “He's still got a ways to go. We talked about his conditioning and losing a few pounds. But we feel he's going to be in great shape when training camp comes."

I guess that explains why refused private workouts and sat out the combine.

There lies the moral of the story.

Not Top 10, didn't work out for Cavs, and still picked.

He didn't work out for the Cavs? I don't think they'd be that dumb.

You do realize who we are talking about here right?

I will give anyone a chance to show what they've got, but I don't like anything about Waiters or the pick. His attitude just doesn't seem to be what you would hope for. He seems lazy which isn't a good thing when you're supposed to work hard to prove doubters wrong.

If you're going to go with that kind of risk, Cleveland, why not Drummond?

Waiters didn't work out for Cleveland.

He obviously got a guarantee from Phoenix, & Cleveland's front office had to convince themselves that Waiters was the guy they needed to draft without bringing him in. At the same time there isn't something a player will show in his workout that teams don't already know off of his game footage during his career.

Waiters will always have weight problems if he doesn't take conditioning serious

He's a guy who is only 6'3 and weighs about 220-230lbs. You saw what happened with Gilbert Arenas in Orlando when his weight reportedly got up to 232lbs and he looked terrible trying to beat anyone off the dribble.

I think this is a great point although I will say that occasionally a player is found to have skills that they never got a chance to show in a college coach's system. Generally, I feel like GMs get fooled into changing their minds in the completely artifical environment of the workout and pay for it.

Cleveland decided it wanted a SG so they reached mightily desptie also needing a SF and C which were readily available and highly touted in Barnes and Drummond.

Or Lamb, who's going to be a good shooter in the league.

It's summer league games people, coming off an injury and not playing in a longtime. Like with all rookies, give them some time.

Exactly, if you don't score 30 a game in summer league, you're a bust to some of these people. Even a year isn't enough time to call someone a bust, much less 3 summer games.

Better question is how are you an out of shape Rookie.

Maybe because he had an injury and wasn't able to work out at his full capacity.

barnes/lamb/ drummond would have been a better selection for the cavs moving forward...even last year thompson was a reach at #4..but thanks to them the raptors got big val :o

I'm a Cuse fan and I like Waiters a lot but I was shocked he was said to be going top 10 then going that high. I thought mid 1st like 17ish type of player. The NBA draft is certainly not a science - after top 2-3 good luck. And some years after #1 its a crap shoot.

I don't think Waiters was that much of a reach. He has the best 1 on 1 drive in this draft. With the exception of MKG. He can split defenders very well, is quick and has exceptional passing skills.

It was a risk taking him, but it isn't as much of a reach as people say. Someone said he isn't top 10? What kind of crack are you smoking?

the draft 3-20 seems like a crap shoot...guys taken at 14 or 17 could easily be as good as the guys takes 3 or 5...weird draft but VERY deep

It's possible but i would still say that Waiters, Barnes, Lamb and even our pick Ross most certainly have a lot more potential than anyone taken 15+

I'm sure we will get a few surprises, but much lower chance of getting lucky even in a draft this deep.

As a Wolves fan, I am morally obligated to start any post about a Cuse guard as this: Cuse guards effing suck.

It's summer league. Let's see how it plays out. I think it was a huge reach, and they should have taken a risk on a big man or just taken Harrison Barnes, but the pick has been made. Let's see if his scoring ability translates into the NBA.

LOL. The thing is, Wesley and Flynn were BEASTS in the Big East. Better than Waiters, by far. I'll never understand how he was drafted this high.

I didn't like the pick either but I'm gonna have to see how Waiters do in the whole season before grabbing my torches and pitchforks.
