View Full Version : Different kinds of flopping...

When a player falls down after shooting a three, barely being touched (Harden, CP3)

Or when a player leans into a defender "drawing contact" (Kobe, Paul Pierce)

And the arm flail..... (Kobe, Durant, Harden...)

I hate the regular flopping but do any of these moves bother anybody else? Are the refs that stupid or do they really think players are trying shooting the ball when they throw their arms in the air?

Yes, offensive flopping is just as bad as defensive flopping.

What about when someone screams to make it seems like there is a lot of contact.

Paul. Pierce. I have to put the TV on mute when I watch Celtics games between him yelling for calls and Garnett's fake tough guy yells at everyone.

I don't think leaning into the defender is flopping

I know Wade does it to prolong his legs. It's actually incredibly smart(look at how Rose hurt his knee)

sometimes there is contact, but you just have to emphasize it more. Maybe you get frustrated if you get fouled all the time and the refs don't call it. Then you FORCE the refs to call it, but now they want to pass a rule that if you "flop" you will get penalized even more.

If this applies to offense, it will give the referees even more control. We will likely see plays where the offensive player gets flagrantly clobbered, and then penalized for "flopping."

This isn't 1994. You can't touch an offensive player these days without it being a foul. A flagrant 2 today was a "good hard, playoff foul" 20 years ago. The level of acting on both sides of the ball has gotten ridiculous.

The rules are the rules.

The evolution of the game has to be toward more precision in the refereeing.

It makes no sense to have a rule book that says "any contact or impeding of progress during a shot attempt is a foul" and then have guys body slamming each other during shots and not getting any fouls called. There is contact on almost every possession.

imo the league was just more dumbass 20 years ago if they were letting flagrant fouls go uncalled, and all kinds of hard contact on defense, as just "part of the game" --- and then on the flipside, giving tons of free throws to Jordan or Bird or whoever. That's just whack.

If you have to fix the rules, clarify the rules, exactly what is a foul, etc, then do it. But this idea that there are 300 fouls every game, and we're just gonna call the 30-40 that really stand out to us, or that balance the action, or whatever, is just bull****. The flopping just muddies the water even more. I don't like flopping, but LoL that the commisioner tries to make a big deal out of "the flopping issue."

Anything on the offensive end really pisses me off. I understand taking charges, a flop is necessary at times or else it will be a blocking foul, but anytime a player flops when dribbling the ball or shooting just makes me mad

Ironically, on almost every offensive flop play there is usually enough contact to call a foul if the rules were followed according to Hoyle.

What confuses players and leads to flopping and dramatics is that there is almost continual fouling, but then *tweet* a foul is called because of a special combination of conditions -- position, slapping noise, star power, etc. So players try to "fish" for foul calls by flopping.

It seems like a waste of time mostly. When players like Durant and Kobe do it it is because they got fouled anyway.

Harden would be the exception... he goes for some utterly fraudulent plays. Like in the final he shot that last second 3 before the half then jumped on the ground when nobody touched him. I'd be more worried about spraining my ankle if he is always throwing himself on the ground, same thing with players who go psycho diving and sliding for loose balls.

Kobe's trademarked drive into somebody then quickly pull up for a jumpshot drawing contact on the way up flop was one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen in basketball.

that's really overstated. Considering that Kobe gets fouled constantly by teams like Boston, if he can make those over-aggressive defenders pay a price because he's faster and has the initiative and they have to watch out for his shot, then too bad
