View Full Version : Raptors offically sign 2011 #5 draft pick Valanciunas after reaching buyout

Thought id put this in the main forum to see what you guys think of his game. Hes been a bit forgotten about playing overseas for another year in Lithuania, but will be here next season. I think he could be a special player especially with the C position so weak in the NBA right now. With Lowry, Ross, Fields additions too not a bad squad

Highlights http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUPDwI72xPk

The Toronto Raptors have signed 2011 first-round draft pick Jonas Valanciunas to a rookie contract and will join the team for training camp this October, the team announced on Wednesday

"We are very pleased to welcome Jonas to the organization,” said Raptors president and GM Bryan Colangelo via a team statement. “We are certain that Raptors fans will soon realize that the year-long process was worth the wait.”

The 20-year-old centre averaged 14.2 points and 7.4 rebounds per game in 23 contests last season with Lietuvos Rytas of the Lithuanian league. He is slated to play for Lithuania's national team at the 2012 Olympics in London. http://www.thescore.com/home/articles/304561-raptors-sign-valanciunas-to-rookie-contract

So is he like a rik smits or a dirk or what?

"I don't understand the hype" and then can't even pin down the guy's style of play. More like a Joakim Noah with better offensive skills. Great motor and drive on the pick-and-roll, great rebounder, pretty good shot-blocker, 80% FT shooter.

Rik Smits is not a bad comparison actually, from the little ive seen of his actual games that ive caught online. Maybe a little Tyson Chandler with more offensive game too

So is he like a rik smits or a dirk or what?

More like a young Bynum I'd say. Not quite as big, but he tries to finish everything with a dunk, great hands, 80+% ft shooter, excellent shot blocker and rebounder.

With all of that said he'll need time to get used to the NBA game for sure. I'm calling a few quick foul-outs in the first half of the season

Yeah he was really good last year, but he didn't show me much in the 1 game I decided to watch (foul trouble). He was suppose to go number 2 last year, but teams screwed up because they were afraid of his Euro Contract. Him and Lowry are going to be big reasons why BC will keep his job for the near future.

Sure those guys may eat him up early in his career but he's so young those guys will be almost out of the league when he's in his prime.

he may be overhyped but with a deep draft like this year..scouts believed he could have gave anthony davis a run for his money as the #1 pick..no one knows whether he will be good/bad until he plays in the nba..but a small sample was when lithuania played against the US team and val was the clear cut best player.

cleveland would have been a complete team if they drafted valacunias, and if they could have traded varejou + multiple first round picks for bynum in the howard deal, they'd have a legit starting lineup. i really wish the raptors could have gotten waiters or lillard, still mad. Joakim Noah energy, defense, without the ugly but much better offense with a decent jumpshot and 80% ft shooting

More like Duncan but that's a massive stretch, haha.
I'd honestly say he's more like Andrew Bynum but not as athletic. He shoots like 60% from the field because he just tries to dunk EVERYTHING. Good rebounder, good shot blocker, incredible motor.
I don't think anybody doubts the talent and potential but us Raps fans are ******** ourselves thinking about this kid, we might have to pump the breaks for a bit while he adjusts to new rules, more athletic competition, etc.

I guess that's true. I meant they have similar games but I don't know if Val can finish as strong as Bynum yet.

Projecting into the future he's more like a Tyson Chandler with an offensive post game.
