View Full Version : Raptors trade James Johnson to Kings

Fresno
07-16-2012, 11:08 AM
The Toronto Raptors, in a deal designed to create some additional salary-cap space, have agreed to trade forward James Johnson to the Sacramento Kings for a future second-round pick, according to sources with knowledge of the deal.

Johnson averaged 9.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 1.4 blocks per game last season but is no longer in Toronto's plans after the recent arrival of Landry Fields and Linas Kleiza's return to health.

A steal for a 2nd round pick which will probably be in the 35-40 range.

Strong on D, not great on O (also a bit of a ball hog at times), plus he had locker room issues with Dwayne Casey from reports. Apparently he didn't want to buy in to the plans they had for his role on the team. His toughness and defence will be missed but I don't think this is a huge loss. It's too bad he couldn't get moved in a package deal but not totally surprised he only brought back a second rounder given everything that surrounded him.

Agreed. But there's probably more to it than just his numbers. The bulls gave up on him real quick, and my raps seem to have done the same. Something must be up with him beyond his ability to ball.

He's one of those guys that doesn't know how to play within himself. He is a good one on one defender and a great help defender, but he does not have an NBA shot. Teams sagged off him and clogged the lane which caused problems offensively for the entire team. He thinks he can pass like magic and shoot like bird and attempts to do so often. If he can develop a decent shot and learn to embrace his role he could be a solid role player.

He has incredibly limited offense but still got it done. 9.2 points off 45% shooting in 25 minutes isn't too bad.

Decent pick up. Provides defense at the 3 like we need and not someone who will take a bunch of shots.

I really like Johnson, the guy is a great defender, his offense isn't great but it's getting better, he could be very valuable to a good team, but on the Kings he will get little respect just like he has got very little respect being with the Raptors.

I thought JJ was worth more than just 1 2nd round pick? He's a solid player who could contribute on most teams.

The thing about him is he's not mentally invested into playing. He sat his last year for the Bulls because he wasn't getting Thibbs offense. He played well for the Raptors, but with Landry Fields coming in, maybe Johnson was expendable.

Alright on second thought giving JJ away might not be the WORST decision, because we do have Landry that can run the 3 spot, not to mention he would be great defensively under Caseys coaching.
But I really don't see the reason for throwing JJ away for technically nothing... is he like that expensive that we cant afford? could we not have packaged him and Calderon as a duo and got a decent player back? LIKE WTF!!!!

He is better than Landry Fields but Colangelo has to make room for the mistake of getting Landry. Oh well sometimes you have to do whatever you can atm to try and contend or atleast not let another team in the east get tougher...

I think it was more Casey's decision than Colangelo to be honest. Got to respect BC for backing his coach in this situation.

i think calangelo is trying to get some money so he can start bidding on some amnestied players

does this mean we are keeping calderon?

Doubt it, the deadline to amnesty players is tomorrow & all the good ones have already been picked up.

As for Calderon, I believe he will start the season with us but will likey be traded near the deadline to a contender just like Barbosa last season.

To those saying this shouldnt e a thread #1 it's legit NBA. News. #2 it's the first whiff of news for kings fans and if it was a heat trade or the Knicks signing a 3rd stringer from Europe it would be okay.

NBA news=NBA forum. Don't say kings forum because this involves two teams and teams hat would have liked to do the trade

This guy has limited basketball skills. He gets most of his points from short jumpers. He's too big to be a SF and too small to be a PF. Zero post game and as far as I remember a pretty below average 3.

Well, time for me to come out of my hole and post my two cents on James Johnson. It might help Kings fans know what they're getting.

The guy is a beast defensively and he became my favorite Raptor after I watched him DOMINATE in his first game against the Chicago Bulls (his old squad). He was all over the floor, getting blocks, steals, rebounds, and even scoring baskets. He can match up with some of the best in the NBA. Offensively, he is mediocre at most things, with a desire to go one-on-one with his defender, often resulting in turnovers.

He's also a black belt in karate and get this...can kick the rim.
In Raptors practice he also pulled off 360 spin-kicks and was able to kick as high as the net.
He has won world championships for karate and also did some cage fighting before basketball.
Not that any of this matters basketball-wise, just some cool facts.

Another thing that made me love him was his swag. In the past couple of years, not that many Raptor players have had that attitude where they think they're the best. Rather, they seem to have the deer-caught-in-headlights look. Although, I think that's going to change with Kyle Lowry coming in too.

James Johnson started the majority of the season, but in April, began arguing with Coach Dwane Casey, which led to multiple DNP-CD's.

One of the biggest assets that the Raptors have right now is their coach, and the defensive system that he is instilling on his players. All the Raptors players are drawing into it, except for whatever reason James Johnson..and for that reason, he had to go.

It also didn't help that Colangelo just spent a boat-load signing Fields. Fields, more than likely will start, which would add to the displeasure of Johnson.

If Keith Smart is able to get Johnson to focus and draw into their system, then this is a steal for the Kings. If Johnson continues to have attitude problems though, then I'll be happy that he's no longer a Raptor.

Back to the hole..

One of the Kings biggest weakness was perimeter defense. They thought they were getting that when they acquired john salmons and travis outlaw. But, it sounds like this guy will provide it. We don't need him to score, there's plenty of options who can already do that. Just need him to improve the perimeter defense and challenge shots. He's probably our best option at SF now. Too bad he can't shoot, but D is a bigger need than shooting.

Guy has potential to be an elite defender at his position if he could accept his role as a defensive specialist, but for some reason he clashed with the head coach in Toronto. I really like him but if they think this is best then I guess it is.

I really like the kid, hope he can carve out a niche.

He has a niche, he can certainly become a defensive specialist in the league. In Toronto however he apparently refused to accept that role. So he's had falling outs now with two straight teams from the sounds of it (Chicago, Toronto). I liked the way he played, hopefully he can straighten himself out in Sacramento.
