that is just flat out ridiculous

It's too bad that there's no other angle available which to view it from. The thing that I want to know is whether or not it made contact with the wall. Of course if it makes contact with the wall then it's not an out.

Looks like he got enough glove to just change the path of the ball and keep it from going out then he trapped it against the wall with the bare hand. Amazing coordination, but yeah, probably not a catch.

I thought that but there was no transition...it was just in his hand...crazy

Pretty sure he caught it.

Even at the 3rd replay- the slowest they give- if you keep hitting play/pause on youtube the speed of the ball going towards the wall suggests when it appears to fall behind the wall that it was falling at a super fast speed to begin with. One would think, at that perceived speed, that when the ball missed the CF's glove it would have fallen directly to the ground before he did if it was unimpeded; the ball was falling faster than the OF was beforehand so the ball should have hit the ground before he did if it was untouched. But if you watch the whole thing frame by frame at no point does the ball appear to fall faster than him, or under him, after it missed his glove- although it's also distorted by the fact there's a white period and a i dot in the advertisement behind him- i think i'm seeing those dots but maybe it is in fact the ball.

Anyways, I think the ball feel with him which means it must have been impeded either by his chest, stomach, right hand, or the wall itself. If it wasn't impeded it would have fallen faster than he did because it was falling much faster before it missed his glove.

It doesn't appear the ball ever went below him which would suggest either it hit him, or the wall, first and then fell at the same speed with him- eventually falling for a hit on the warning track and he sold it as an out by grabbing it from the ground right as he hit the ground with it- making it almost instant.

Or

As the ball missed his glove and kept flying down, infront of the wall at that high speed, he grabbed it with his hand and fell with the play- beautiful catch and all.

I've watched this over and over and I don't know which it is, i'm sure only the CF knows... but if I had to guess i'd say catch.

It's simple. He didn't catch it with his glove, he either caught it with his barehand or it fell right next to him and he picked it up saying that he caught it.

Comments on youtube are saying he cheated and had a ball that aapparently you can see in his back pocket lol, anyways I think he definitely trapped it against the wall. Its just a great optical illusion.

I guess he deflected the ball into his bare hand. I saw the ball in his hand during a frame on the video.

I've watched it a few times now. It appears to hit the top of the wall, and then he catches it in his bare hand. Good for him, selling it as an out.

The ball hit off of his glove, hit the wall, then he bare handed it.

So it was not a catch.

I stand by Ozzie Smith's barehanded catch on a diving play on a ball that hit a rock and he threw the guy out.

He obviously had another/second ball in his back pocket guys. The YouTube commenters explained it all to me.

Yeah, I'm not buying that the ball he has in hand, is the same ball that was hit.

The ball hit off the top of the wall and he caught it with his bare hand. His glove went over the wall before the ball hit the top of the wall.

I don't think he caught it either. I think its sheer luck though. Doesn't look like he got any of it and it just landed in his hand. I bet it hit the wall on the way down, seems too unlikely that he caught it clean with his bare hand. I was thinking that maybe he could have picked it up off the ground but that isn't right cause A) it would have bounced and B) the way he got up, there's no way he had the wherewithal to find it in the split second after he hit the ground.

Could have hit his shirt and got caught in that. We'll never know unless James decides to tell us.

You can clearly see what happened.. no need to ask the guy it's self.

The ball hit off of his glove at such a force that the glove went over the fence but the ball didn't, the ball hit off the glove hit the wall, and the ball hit James in the stomach as he was in the air and ended up grabbing it and played it off like he caught it.

Crazy i cant tell. It is like he's a wizard. Looses his glove over the wall but not the ball. If this baseball career doesn't pan out, perhaps he should consider being a magician. ;)

It appears many here didn't see it, so who cares. I never understood the logic of bumping a thread you don't care for. If it is old news or simply not worth discussing, it'll die.

I would say its off the wall. Grabbed a nice screenshot....

You can see the ball between his wrist/wrist band and the wall

Looks like the ball hit off the top of the wall or skimmed the wall not even a HR and the ball got trapped between his body and the wall

Deff didn't catch it though...but cool play
