How is Indiana not getting a 1st round pick out of this deal?

Dallas owe a first to Houston that is protected all the way until 2018, which means the earliest first rounder they can give up is 2020, which is more than seven years away and thus not tradeable.

In short, Dallas can't trade away first round picks unless they acquire some new ones first.

Looks like Cuban really did have a plan.

Yeah, he had a plan. It didn't have anything to do with Chris Kaman and Darren Collison though. Solid short term solutions, but considering Dallas' ambitions and what they let go, I don't think there is any way their offseason can be looked at as anything more than average.

Bad trade for Indiana. What are they thinking, especially if they plan on matching Hibbert's contract?

And I guess good move for Dallas, but Collison and Kaman look like temporary plugs. I don't like this team in the interim or long-term. It looks like they have no plan of attack. They're going to be mediocre until Dirk retires.

yeah his plan was deron williams and/or dwight howard, the kaman signing and collison trade are nice pickups but after all but passing on trying to defend their championship last off season i dont think kaman and collison were what cuban and company had in mind, but i guess its better then nothing

Young2Kinsler

This is by no means Dallas big plan, but it is smart. We acquire some good talent, all cheap and on short deals. Jones and Kaman on 1 year, Collison on 2. They are trade assets if we struggle and want to get picks for a S&T next offseason for a much better player.

I don't think so, on the contrary, I thinks this means Mayo to Dallas.

Everything I have heard from people who have inside knowledge here in town is that Dallas isn't interested in Mayo. He is a SG who can't shoot. Dallas needs a guy who can light it up from outside.

These moves "Keep The Powder Dry" in order to make another big run at a star next offseason, or trade for a team disgruntled with their star midseason. Of course this team won't be great, but they have to fill out a roster, and short term deals with some talent is always a plus.

Mavs '06 finals team:

Harris
Stackhouse/Terry
Howard
Dirk
Dampier

Mavs '11 finals Team:

Kidd
Stevenson/Terry
Marion
Dirk
Chandler

This year so far:

Collison/West?
Carter/Roddy
Marion/Dahntay Jones
Dirk/Brand?
Kaman/?

Last year was an anomaly, i think that Dirk has 2-3 elite years left. If i'm right that means we'll be right in the mix for a chip depending on how everything else fills out.

EDIT: Collison is probably the best starting PG we've had in awhile. As far as i know, the dude was balling, especially for the Hornets.

We have about $21 million in expiring contracts: both D. Joneses, Wright, Kaman, Collison, Carter, and Roddy. That's a lot of attractive trade chips. Adding Kaman and Collison = short-term gain + long-term flexibility.

Brand is an expiring too, but you can't trade guys you've acquired through amnesty during the season.

The fact Kidd bounced for the Knicks seems even better now. 3yr/$9M for Kidd was too much. However, he will help Knicks some, more than he would anymore in Dallas

Wow, Indiana is so dumb. Collison is a high basketball semi-quick guard out of UCLA, plays tough D. What the hell are they thinking?

Shame on them and NOLA for letting him go. He will be a star in Dallas regardless. Have to give this one up to Cuban Castro.

Very good moves by Dallas.

I had a suspicion they were up to something when they amnestied Haywood.

Gotta think they still got a couple moves up their sleeves.

Going to be VERY interesting...

Can we find a way to get Korver please!!!!

All we need is a deadly shooter. I say we are 6-7 seed right now. Way better than last year 7 seed team

But we are not done. Expected Brand, West, and more to come.

HORRIBLE trade for Indiana. This was definitely an upgrade at the PG position for Dallas though, should make Dirk happy.

Well Kidd is still going to be a good back up, the best back up point available this offseason. 6 PPG, 5 APG, 4 RPG, decent defense, and veteran leadership is worth the 3 million per year. Now you guys do have a bunch of cap space right now so maybe it was just a cap saving move, but as of now most of the good FAs are gone.

oh no dont get me wrong he was a good pick-up for the knicks(with his leadership & high basketball IQ+he could help mentor Lin) but not for us seeing he would have prob been are starting pg and 3yr/9mil is pretty steep price for a 39yr old when facing westbrook and cp3

Would not try McGrady since we already have an oldie in VC. I'm okay with Marco Belinelli tho, he can shoot it. Delfino not a bad option either

Would be pretty cool for the cousins to finish their careers playing together like they started in Toronto though.

The Mavs are hording cap space for the next two year's free agency classes.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like the Pacers are trying to cut Collison's salary probably because of the max extension given to Hibbert.

With Paul George, Tyler Hansbrough, David West, and Danny Granger's deals all soon coming up, they had to shuffle at least one of the guys that needed to be reupped next.

The Dwight and Deron package never happened, but Dallas might end up beating even that dream almost completely by accident. Looking more and more that Orlando's just going to hang onto him for an extended period and that D12 will hit free agency next year, and while Cuban would've signed Deron in a heartbeat this offseason(obviously), he wasn't the Mav's top choice between the superstar guards, and that guy's looking like he might hit free agency next year too. Very lucky, but good on Cubes to stick to the plan even after Deron stayed in Brooklyn to give them this possible opportunity.

Who's the idiot who said Dallas wouldn't make the playoffs? Who's the idiot who said they would only win 15 games?

Great move, they have a PG and C in one day. Guessing they aren't done either.

Might have been better to spend one year being bad.
Then next season, have a high pick, plus cap space.

Now they are a 6th 7th or 8th seed

you must be smoking crack if you think d12 will sign in dallas...

But didnt Chris Broussard say that if he doesn't end up in BK the only team he will consider re-signing to is Dallas? so if he does become a free agent which i believe will be a strong possibilty whether its after playing for ORL, LAL or HOU(Unless they trade to BK which would be dumb because you would be taking up Lopez Max Deal) He will then sign w/ Dallas as a FA we will have enough cap & 9 times out of 10 that would make Dirk play maybe 2 more yrs

^The Dallas interest hasn't been repeated recently though, has it? I don't think we can put too much stock in what he said when he thought he'd be going somewhere with DWill.

There's a lot to like about Dallas - great owner for a start - but unless we hear it again under the new circumstances I don't think we can assume it's going to be Dallas or bust for him.

True, but still could be a strong possibility unless some big market team makes drastic moves to improve and makes cap room for him but the possibility of that happens again is.....wouldn't you agree?

I agree it's a possibility that he likes Dallas more than Houston or LAL right now, even after all the things that have changed. A possibility.
If he got traded to LAL, though, I'd be hugely surprised if he didn't re-sign. If he got traded to Houston I still think there's a real good chance he'd stay - I don't think a 35 year old Dirk then rebuilding would be enough to convince him to take less money and walk.

More importantly, I think if it comes to it, he'd walk to Atlanta with his buddies JSmith and Morrow before he goes to Dallas, and even before that the team that he's with might prefer to S+T him to Brooklyn for Lopez and Wallace and those picks or something.

In short, I think it's a possibility that he ends up in Dallas, but I'd probably give each of LAL, Hou, ATL a better chance of ending up with him.

Well, not sure I'd completely rule out Sessions. He's still viable as a back up PG or swing PG/2.

That said, wouldn't be surprised if it was the Bobcats... at least the rumor is that the Bobcats are targetting him.

Why pick up sessions when we can just resign delonte who's the same type of gaurd for much cheaper than sessions, bobcats sounds like a lot more better fitting especially if they trade Dj to Indiana ....he should have signed to opt back w/ LAL at least he would have had a chance at competing

I'm not going to say Dallas won this trade hands down. DC has gotten worse every year since his rookie year. George Hill is their guy now at PG. If they sign Augustin I'd say their PG situation has improved.

Vinylman
07-12-2012, 11:18 AM
While Collison is a Nice PG... he is nothing more than a borderline starter... I guess getting him and Dahntay Jones fills out some roster spots on one year deals for cheap but it hardly makes Dallas competitive.

Really, it comes down to who's available.

Mavs are coming to the party late, so they won't have the sort of choices that the early teams had in terms of good players.

And as I said, the main reason I *could* possibly see the Mavs doing it is for flexibility. That said, I suspect they'll pass on Sessions now that they have DC.

For those saying this was a dumb deal on the Pacers' part, they basically did this to get rid of Dahntay's contract and the fact that Collison probably wasn't going to like coming off the bench. It also makes it kinda obvious that other moves are coming. It will probably make more sense in the next few days.
Also... Collison isn't as great as you all think. You were probably impressed with his playoff performance at times, but he wasn't what most of you think he is. Let's put it this way, George Hill took over his spot.

Young2Kinsler
07-12-2012, 01:15 PM
This isn't a bad deal either way. Dallas traded a smart, youngish C who they weren't going to be retaining, and got a decent young PG, and an expiring deal in Jones. Collison won't light the world on fire, but he is good enough to start for us and doesn't have long term financial committments. Dallas is "keeping the powder dry"

As for Ian, he is a good quality backup C for Indy, who is under control for a while now, at maybe a LITTLE high of a per year price, but not much.
