While not seriously, I did think about that. It would be pretty funny if he did.
If I'm him and I'm told that Houston is the best offer, wouldn't it make sense for him to just say, 'ya know what, nevermind. Let me sign an extension here'.

Brooklyn's fully guaranteed the first 4 years, $58M of a max deal offer for Brook Lopez, sources tell Y! Sides still discussing 5th year.

This is Brooklyn's way to stave off Lopez signing an offer sheet elsewhere, and crushing a sign-and-trade possibility for Dwight Howard.

They won't be able to use him in a sign and trade for Dwight anymore.

Sources said Houston was still shopping for more expiring contracts on Tuesday, calling teams with salary-cap room and offering power forward Luis Scola (three years, up to $30.6 million remaining) as a possible way of helping the Magic dump even more salary in its proposal.

Brooklyn has shown a willingness to provide the Magic cap relief by taking back unwanted contracts, like that of shooting guard Jason Richardson (three years, $18.6 million remaining). But the Nets may need to find a way to offer more if they want to have Howard by the end of the day.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/sam_amick/07/11/nets-magic-dwight-howard-brook-lopez-trade/index.html#ixzz20LH2Lapu

Houston sounds like the likeliest option if they can manage to get a 1st for Scola and are willing to absorb some of Orlando's toxic contracts.

The Nets and Brook Lopez moved closer to completing an agreement for a five-year, $78 million maximum contract extension, sources told Yahoo! Sports. Once Lopez signs with Brooklyn, the franchise's pursuit of a Howard deal officially ends.

Orlando has become aggressive again with Houston in trade talks on Tuesday, and is still holding dialogue with the Los Angeles Lakers and other teams about a Howard blockbuster.

Once Lopez signs with the Nets – or were to sign an offer sheet – the Nets would no longer be able to use him in a sign-and-trade scenario.

About time someone put a deadline on this.......Orlando is trying to build their team from as close to scratch as possible (i.e. OKC) and they need flexibility. Houston and Lakers offer ORL high draft picks, removal of ORL bad contracts and salary cap flexibility...Nets cant do that.

Houston wants Bynum because they know Howard wont stay there at all. They at least want to have a "chance" of keeping a big man around. Lakers are smart to take Richardson because he can shoot from outside and spell Kobe. I think J. Hill may even be in this deal going to ORL and the Lakers may have to take on Scola, who would be a good back up guy. Their payroll will be huge, but have you seen Miami's? Championships cost money.....

Puck017

Not a rumor just an idea

Hou: Bynum, J-Rich, D.J. Augustine
LAL: Howard, G. Davis, J.J. Redick
Cha: Patterson, Eyenga, Blake
Orl: K-Mart, Diop, Carroll, Tor 2013 1st, Hou 2013 1st, LAL 2017 1st, Any player that Houston currently has the right to, $6.4M trade exception from LAL
* Hou 2013 1st and LAL 2017 1st are unprotected

Orlando gets their reset button with picks that will be much better than what they would get from the Nets. Martin will help them win a few games and should be able to bring in another 1st around the trade deadline. If the Lakers experience a Dwightmare that 2017 pick could turn out pretty good for Orlando. The Lakers are in championships now mode so they not only get Howard but also improve their bench, but end up taking on a lot of salary. Houston gets a premier big man that has interest in playing there long term and two solid players. Bobcats clear the way for Kemba while getting his backup. They also get an emerging talent at PF and a project at SF.

Well to Orlando's defense, they're not gonna trade Dwight for a package centered around Lopez. Just a completely unconscionable trade between the two teams. People have been saying this for over a year now, the Nets just do not have the assets to acquire Dwight. Lopez is a nice piece and all, but nothing more than a role player. Theres not a team in the league that can build a successful team around Lopez. Hes simply not that type of player that will make a significant impact on a team.

I love how people say Orlando's new GM is a joke or doesn't know what he's doing. Why? Because YOU want him to be traded ASAP? If Orlando doesn't think they are getting good value for him then why would they make that deal? Your claims make no sense. Yes, I am tired of all the Dwight talk as well, but I don't expect Orlando to just give him to Brooklyn for a sack of beans just so they can end the drama. That wouldn't make any sense.

Whats with this "hater" word being thrown out everytime someone says something about a player on a fan's team. I understand you are a Nets fan and a fan of Lopez but you need to understand, Lopez is not a star player in this league. Hes not even the best player on his own team, a team that was among the worst in the league last season.

As I have stated in the past, if you could put Lopez on any current NBA team, he wouldnt be the best player on a single team. Thats a role player. Nothing to do with being a hater. I got no reason to hate on the Nets or Lopez. Just thought it funny people actually thought Orlando would trade Dwight Howard for Brook Lopez. If you could remove yourself from your fanhood of the Nets, you would understand just how silly that sounds.

Melo is a superstar. An overrated one, but a superstar nontheless. He is a perennial all star, he is the best player on his team and one of the 20 best players in the league. He is one of the most complete offensive players in the league, can create his own shot, is a clutch performer and is a player that actually leads his teams. None of these are traits you can say about Lopez. Not sure what youre definition of a star is, but theres no way anyone in their right minds would qualify Lopez as a star. He is what he is. A solid role player. Nothing less but nothing more. Lopez is what? Somewhere in the 50 range as the best players in the league?

There are about 8 Superstars in this league. About 20-25 stars. And the rest of them are all role players. Lopez would fit in the role players category.

MagicBucsSox

@JohnDenton555: #Magic GM Rob Hennigan basically said If B.Lopez gets 4-$58M or 5-$78M contract from #Nets that there will be no deal for Dwight Howard.
@ChrisMannixSI: Hennigan, in a very Sam Presti-like way, does everything he can to call Nets offer junk without actually using the words.
@JohnDenton555: #Magic GM Rob Hennigan talked to Dwight Howard today. He described talks as "conversational, respectful, professional and businesslike."
@JohnDenton555: Though he didn't rule out restarting talks with Nets, #Magic GM Rob Hennigan said "there's probably not a lot there." Orl looks elsewhere..

Sources told ESPN.com the Rockets are discussing a multitude of trade scenarios with the Magic, offering to serve both as the team that would acquire Howard in a direct trade between the clubs and also as a third team that would participate in a trade that lands Howard with the Lakers and brings All-Star center Andrew Bynum to Houston.

Sources say Hennigan might feel more comfortable taking back a package of youngsters, recent draftees and future first-round draft picks -- while shedding some long-term salary as well -- than taking on Bynum as Howard's replacement and facing a similar challenge in convincing him to commit to the franchise long-term like the Magic have dealt with for months with Howard.

Not much, but Howard has to make an expanded list right now. He can't go to Brooklyn anymore. So he can either play this year out and sign with ATL, Houston, or Dallas next summer, or he can come up with a few teams he wouldn't mind be traded too.

ATL and Houston wouldn't mind a rental according to reports.

This,I think he will add LA to his list by tomorrow. The Brooklyn dream is over.

Those parameters haven't worked for two examples of a 3 team trade. They can't find a 3rd team to take the short end of the stick. If that third team hasn't come forward by now I wouldn't hold my breath that they ever will.

Up to this point that holds true, but a few things are certain :

Dwight will not play in Orlando. He made his demands and hennigan has stated he doesn't want anyone around who isn't 'invested' in the team.

In order to fully capitolize on his shoe deal, Dwight must play in either LA or NYC. Thus his demand.

So knowing that and taking into account and using a little deductive reasoning you are left with the obvious. Dwight to LA. Whether or not it involves the rockets remains to bee seen but if the request for draft picks/young talent/expiring contracts also holds true them again you don't have more than a handful of teams who can satisfy all of the above and nobody who can offer more picks than the rockets.

orlando is stupid not to take bynum for howard, and stupid they wont just do lopez and brooks along with 2 first round picks. wtf is one more first round pick going to do for you. man i hope he just bolts as a FA.

I would love to see that.. I honestly dont care where dwight goes in FA but to see magics FO getting shafted... The lakers and rockets deal (even though we dont know the full details) probably isnt bad because every team gets something good in return... I think the magics are wanting way too much. Walk away dwight, in next years free agency!

He pretty much has to be traded though. How can he play in Orlando after all this? Opting in was such a huge mistake. He would be on Brooklyn right now if he didn't opt in.

I think Orlando just extended talks to Brooklyn just to say "Hey Dwight we tried". Now they open up the possibility of new teams coming into the mix, because Howard has to make a new list right now.

I think that's what Hennigan is banking on. The problem is, yes it did buy them some time, but not much. Orlando will get really bad offers at the trading deadline for Howard, I think we all know that. But I do think it did buy them some time to pull something out between now and the start of training camp.

Thats why I want them to fall flat on their faces for jerky the other teams around. I do feel really bad for the magics fans that have to go through this. Even if they have a new FO to do deals, cant they learn from their previous FO? Its even worse this time around because they dont have a team option on howard to offer him. Can they bring talent in with their current situation "IF" they somehow convince him to stay? Probably not... Maybe in 2-3 years?? I hope they just take what they can while they still have the chance.

If this was yalls team and y'all superstar wanted out you wouldn't wanna just make a crappy trade to get rid of him us much rather hold him and hope for something better .... can't get much worse u call it stupid but its smart if they hold him long enough he will prob freak out and open up some other options and we could end up with an even better deal in the end. just saw on espn, reporting the 3 way trade doesn't work. Who is emerging as the front runner, n what the hell is orlando waiting for, no one wants to offer too much for this drama saga filled center, but he is def. Worth a gamble, but who takes him if no one can offer orlando much in return because quite frankly he will not sign with the magic (lmfao). So who is it and what will they offer??

If Houston is willing to do this, then that makes the most sense. I still haven't heard any truth behind Bynum saying he won't re-sign with Orlando being out there either.

LAL supposedly will take back J-rich's contract as well. But our picks are weak.

Whatever happens, happens, hopefully Orlando gets the best deal it can get. But more importantly, I hope this ends in the next week or so

Yea, the point is, by the time we're in Decemeber we're all gonna know how much of a beast Lamb is, and hopefully Jones and White can showcase their potential as well. And if that's the case we're not going to give anyone of those guys + future picks + other prospects up while taking on crap salaries, just to rent an unmotivated and b*tching Dwight for half a season.

Dwight might miss the beginning of the season (back injury) which means Lakers are even more reluctant to trade him w/out an extension, just plain dumb.

Howard either plays out the year in Orlando or agrees to extension w/ LA.

SO WHO IS IT AND WHAT WILL THEY OFFER??

Send him to China. The Guandong Tigers need a big man.

As much as it sucks for orlando fans (and this all does) the Magic FO just doesn't want to let go for anything short of 6 first rounders, an All-star or 2, and want 3 bad contracts taken off their books along with 2 vacation homes and a private yacht. In other words, a 5 team Dwightfest trade that will potentially uproot 10 or 12 NBA players and their families ;) But as long as Dwight's happy too...it's all worth it! Who cares about SVG, the current Magic roster, the fans, the players on the potential/perpetual trading block? His back better be as good as new, 'cause this is quite a load he's carrying around.

The Never-ending story continues.

You still wouldn't be better than the Heat, Celtics, Bulls or even the Nets w/ Lopez. DWill will run circles around all your guards. The Hawks team you're proposing on paper still isn't as good as some of the past Orlando Magic teams with Dwight like in 2009 and 2010.

I'm guessing he meant career 20ppg scorer. He has the potential, but has only done it once.

By this logic then - people should stop saying that Lopez only gets 4 rebs a game and start giving him credit for his respectable 7.5 per game career average.

No way the Nets would be better. A team of Harris, Williams, Morrow, Smith and Howard is a top 3 team in the East IMO.

Its looking more like "scraps" or nothing if you can call several 1st round draft picks and decent players with a year or two left on their contracts. Im pretty sure kmart or even scola would be in the mix. And you bring up a great point of "losing your star player" because it looks like he really wants to leave. It makes the situation worse by saying they want a star replacement and now wantinh picks and decent players with expiring contracts. Sure sounds like the rockets to me. Like I said before, I really do feel bad for you and the rest of the magics fans.

Good point because the rockets are one of the very few teams in the league who's willing to make something work while having the assests. And what if their draft picks do turn out good? Dwight or Bynum in free agency?

I tried this on trade machine & it worked. Hear me out before flaming me.

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=832pdth

3-team 7-player deal between Bulls, Magic & 76ers.

Bulls get:

C Howard
SF Igoudala
SG J-Rich

Magic get:

C Noah
PF Boozer
G Butler
Bobcats pick from Tyrus Thomas trade

76ers get:

SF Deng
2nd round draft pick from Korver trade

ORL scenario: First off, if ORL would take Boozer (still a career 17 & 10 guy) with Noah, the Magic are setup in the frontcourt with a couple of guys near 20 on the PER that can be effective. They also get a young solid guard with upside in Butler, since IMO he will never get minutes with the Bulls. ORL still has the $4.3M trade exception from the Bass trade. Potential for a 4-6 seed below if they can gel. And the Charlotte 1st rounder as well included.

2012-13 lineup:

Noah
Boozer/Big Baby
Turkoglu/Q-rich
Reddick
Nelson/Duhon (Nelson resigned with ORL)

76ers scenario: Deng will fill the hole of Iggy being traded. Still Deng is only 27, and the 76ers would have a nice young lineup that can be competitive, but they would lack depth on the bench. Also receive a future 2nd rounder from CHI.

2012-13 lineup:

Hawes
Young
Deng
Turner
Holliday

Bulls scenario: Adding Howard, Iggy, & J-Rich puts the Bulls right back into the Top 2-3 in the East behind Miami. Taj will finally get to start at PF & with Howard expect a lot of calls and physical play. A change of scenery could make Iggy flip the switch and show what he's capable of. J-Rich could either start or come off the bench with Rip, & with Kirk at the 1 while Rose sits, & Teague learining Thibs system, the Bulls would be solid, only the bench mob would be gone, so depth is an issue. Find a backup C if Asik walks. Jermaine O'Neal, Kwame Brown, or Diop would be reasonable choices as a backup C.

2012-13 lineup:

Howard
Gibson
Igoudala
J-Rich/Rip
Kirk/Teague

This is just my opinion. Some may like it some won't. Disregard that Hollinger wins crap. Deng will not give you 5 less wins. Thoughts?
