View Full Version : Cano snubs Melky on the handshake - Fair or Foul?

In what was, for the most part, a fairly uneventful All-Star game there was one little nugget of mini controversy when Robinson Cano declined to slap or shake the hand of his former teammate Melky Cabrera as Melky rounded 2nd base following his two run home run on Tuesday night.

I haven't been able to find any quotes from either guy after the game about it.

Granted, the game does count and they're playing on opposite teams, but it still seemed slightly dick-ish to me. Konerko was having fun with Chipper at first base after his thousand hopper ground ball single, Prince and Braun exchanged pleasantries after his leaping LF grab robbed Fielder of extra bases... There were lots of little exchanges like that. I mean yeah it counts, but it's still an exhibition game. And again, these guys were teammates.

So what does everyone else make of it?

It's nothing. It was talked about on the telecast that both players are good friends and talk all the time. Cano was just messing with Melky.

It just seemed odd to me that Cano, of all people, would be the guy. This is the same dude who opened the FOX telecast by proclaiming "There's one statistic I lead the league in every year....smiles."

I mean. Really?

It's fine. Not a big deal at all.

it was absolutely nothing.

And Melky said he reached out after Cano said 'nice home run'

What was wrong, was the way the fans treated Cano and his family.

Meh it's not a big deal, they're friends and Cano said back in the beginning of June that he was happy and was rooting for Melky to continue his success in San Fran. This is being blown out of proportion.

This is a non-issue. Cano and Melky are best friends. There are rumors floating around that the reason why Melky was traded was because Cano and Melky were having "too" much fun and not focusing on baseball. Hell, after the game they probably went out partying like it was 2009.

;)

Anyway, to the one or two super defensive Yank fans (one or two specifically, not all the Yankee fans that have responded so far), I actually voted for the third option when I created the poll. You'll notice in my OP I describe the incident as "slightly dickish". I don't think I'm blowing anything out of proportion at all since I haven't really made it out to be anything. I'm a Cub fan and consequently have no knowledge of any Cano/Melky history be it good or bad, so I made the thread with the sole purpose of inquiry.

I doubt I'm the only one with no background knowledge of the apparently deep-rooted Cano/Melky thunderbuddy partnership who watched the game Tuesday night, saw it happen, and thought "Hmm, well that was kinda douchey."

Soooo you can all relax.

When Melk came up and struggled at the end of the 2005 season it was Robinson who gave him guidance having abit experience under his belt. They like mentioned above are best friends and it was probably Robinson joking around with Melky on that play.

Also, I'll go ahead and disagree with the whole "KC fans wronged Cano" nonsense. They booed him because he didn't take their hometown guy. They booed him a lot. They booed the **** out of him.

Any racial stuff involved? No?

Did he get any death threats? He didnt?

Any members of his family harmed? None? Not even an uncle or something?

It's baseball. They booed the guy. He dealt with it very well, try doing the same.

So, just because your teams stadium is hosting the HR derby doesn't mean one of the hometown players automatically deserves to be in the derby. KC fans need to get over it.

The only issue I see relevant from this all-star week was how the fans of KC booed Cano during an event for charity.

Personally I like it. Whether it was intentional or not, it tells the fans the players actually do care about the outcome of this game and its more than just an exhibition.

Relax ... Lol....ok how was Billy Butler better than anyone else AL had in the HR derby??? He could've gotten them gator aid or maybe towels... He was lucky to be a Allstar ... End of Chubby .... Did you see the look on Melky's face when trotted around second base, he knew Cano was not going to shake his hand...beside how would that look to Cano's teammates, when his team is getting drilled.

pacofunk64

Ya I don't blame Cano one bit. Sure the All-Star game isn't taken all that serious but we're talking home field advantage for 1 team and that could make or break as WS title.
