What happens if a player under contract dies? How does that effect the teams cap and do they pay the contract to his family. What if they have no family?

Interesting.

I doubt they would pay it to the family. Ehh, maybe they would. Who knows.

I might be wrong but I think the only player under contract to die is Drazen Petrovic, well that is from memory

he was a f.a and planning to sign to panathinaikos in greece.

reggie lewis was on contract tough.

i guess it will happen as in the career ending injurys.

the salary counts against you for a full year, then its cleared from your cap, if the player comes back ( wich is not posible in this case) the salary comes back to your books.
Also, a trade/cap exception worht half the money of the players contract is created for you so you can sign or trade for a player.

The NBA has insurance just in case a players passes away ,and the family still get's your pension. in the case of Reggie Lewis his family was taken care of and will still get his pension money!. the sad thing is i think the money comes off the books i think morally the salary should be paid .

I know Joe Johnson's contract is bad, but you don't have to murder the guy..........

There are exceptions in the CBA for deaths and career-ending injuries that may be applied for to allow replacements mid-season with reduced or zero cap implication depending upon the circumstance. After the season in progress ends, the contract is then completely wiped from the books.

Contracts are also insured in case of unfortunate circumstances, whereupon the insurance proceeds would go to their listed beneficiaries (usually their families).

me two i wondered for like a major team not to take anything away from the teams it has happened to but i mean NFL or NBA team or MLB. It would be crazy. After the dust settles what would come of the season etc.

lol funny because his contract is what brought this up between me and a friend. I didnt wish death on him and i dont but we were thinking what if something happened to him or another player would they get in his case 20 mill in cap or not and how would it effect the season/ his family etc.

They just sit them at the end of the bench and no one notices. Eddy Curry's actually been dead for years.

The Marshall football program had a plane crash and kill all their players and though it was a college football team it did happen to them they even made a movie based off of it called "We Are Marshall"
