Who do you think was or is the most physically dominating player to play the game in terms of sheer physical gifts?

physically dominating ? shaq and i cant see why its hard for you to decide. i think it a no brainer. shaq is the most physicallyl dominating player of all time.

lebrons dominance isnt just reliant on his physical atributes. he has court vision, ball iq etc. those things arent measured by athletic ability.

That is where i reach my crossroads. Because i agree with every singly point you just made.. and yet.. i watch Lebron literally run people over and dominate the game with his athletic gifts. The size and weight of a PF, all muscle, as fast as any player, and with crazy hops...

Lebron can dominate but not like shaq. Shaq was so much stronger than every other center. He would bully other centers like they were shooting guards. Couldn't be stopped 1 on 1 period.

Which player do you think has more skill? They both produced at roughly the same rate so I would think whoever you found less skilled was more physically dominant.

Lebron is a ridiculous athlete. IMO he is definitely the most physically gifted/talented athlete to ever play in the NBA but honestly I think a majority of people would agree that stopping Lebron James is much easier than stopping a prime Shaq. I can't remember a series where Shaq was stopped and contained like how Lebron was in the Finals against Dallas.

I want to say Shaq but nobody here has brought up the fact this guy was always injured and out of shape. I'm pretty sure he has a career average of like 60 games out of 82.

LeBron plays 44 minutes a game, attacks the basket with pure force, and never gets injured.

Wilt, Shaq, Hakeem, and LeBron for me. Wilt and Shaq should not have had that combination of strength and height while still having that balance. Hakeem moved like a ballerina at 6'11", quicker then some guards. LeBron is Karl Malone's size but runs like Kerry Kittles back in the day.

lebron is a phenom in his own right but I think he is fundementally sound enough to be an effective player once his gets older and isnt as athletic like kobe or pierce for example.

when you say "physical speciman" shaq is the first player that comes to mind to me because his dominence was so reliant on his athletic ability & size.

Relative to the competition? Wilt, hands down.

Side by side? Wilt (7'1"/250) or Shaq (7'1"/325). Shaq was stronger, Wilt was crazy athletic in terms of hops.

If they grew up in today's era? I probably gotta go with Wilt... poor diet, primitive training and medical facilities... no telling what Wilt would have grown up to be today.

I could easily see Wilt being well over 325 pounds and 7'3" with modern diet/training/treatment.

Or maybe the point is Lebron doesn't belong in the same discussion as Shaq in terms of physical dominance.

Better skills, sure. But physically dominating? Not in the same league.

Now if the question was more athletic... that would be Lebron. But that wasn't the question either was it?

this. so dominant and yet so raw. but completely unstoppable in his prime, and the competition was tougher than what say wilt faced.

i'd throw jordan in slightly ahead of bron just cause he outclassed every athlete in the league by a country mile in his time. bron has some peers in terms of sheer athletic ability. solid 1-2-3.

AKAYaReal
07-08-2012, 09:04 PM
Physical ability goes to Lebron hands down. But when I think of dominance, no way does Lebron beat out Shaq.

Shaq's dominance came in the last great era of the centers. Ewing, Morning, Olajuwon, Mutombo to name a few. In this era, he was a beast.

In their primes, I call Shaq. This is not a knock on Lebron or his game though.

Yes,the NBA started to allow zone defense because of Shaq. The back board support was redesigned because of him also.

If rule changes are the criteria didnt they change around 20 rules due to Wilt? I realise most here never watched Wilt, me included, but he was the most physically dominating player ever in the NBA. If he played now would it be different, probably, but he doesnt. He played when he did and no one since has been the physical freak he was.

If your argument is that he played against 6'8" white guys then you are making my point. His size, strength, speed and agility was much greater than any other player in the league at that time. More even than Shaq who is number 2 in my book.

Wilt Chamberlains play forced the NBA to alter the rules because of this big mans dominance. These rule changes included widening the lane, instituting offensive goaltending and revising rules governing inbounding the ball and shooting free throws (Chamberlain would leap with the ball from behind the foul line to deposit the ball in the basket).

IVERSON - 5'10 - 150LBS, entered league as fastest player ever with ball in hands on court, 44inch vertical with all that mental/physical toughness to match and was a just a freak of nature athlete, 5star athlete at MLB/NFL/NBA level(deion&bo jack lucky he didnt decide to go 2way)

Seems he was in the paint as much as SHAQ, with no post game or presence

the things he could do on the court 'physically' at his size is 2nd to none, only WILT/SHAQ/BRON/DR.J/VINCE and a few others could match it, and last i checked they are 6'7 and up with 2 being FOOTERS

Although Wilt was one of the best, if not THE best center of all time, I have to give it to Shaq since I've actually seen him play throughout his career and not just rely on a handful of highlights as with Wilt.

Why it is a toss up between Shaq and Lebron?? It's no comparison...When they gave Shaq the ball, we all knew damage was about to be done..when they give Lebron the ball, we dont know if he's gonna drive-in and pass out, lay-up fadeaway, take a jump shot etc. Shaq was going in and no one wanted any part of that..No ONE!! He had most of the centers scared to defend him...I can't think of any other player that had other 7 footers scared!

Shaq = Pure and absolute dominance

Got to be shaq, lebron number 2. You have to consider how heavy, fast, and tall he was, plus hops. They had to change rules because of him. Lebron, is still impressive however, as his athletic gifts could transfer to almost any other sport. He is pretty much what you would consider the perfect athlete, wheras shaq is a monster.
