Well, they did pick up Chandler so it wasn't awful. And when they signed the Team Option, it was PRIOR to the CBA, so they did NOT know there would be an amnesty.

I'm trying to think of a player still in play that it would be worth using the Amnesty in the last year of an $18M contract...

Drawing a blank.

Knicks Did it to be able to SIGN TYSON CHANDLER. They loved what Billups brings to the Table and wanted to keep him, but it was a "business decision". Knicks had a Handshake agreement with Chandler, they just needed to use the Amnesty on Billups to be able to Sign Him. No Amnesty = No Chandler.

Why did Philly Amnesty a $18M Expiring Contract? Who do they have a Handshake agreement with? Nick Young? :pity:

Pure speculation according to Philly, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's something in the works. Once Colangelo starts making moves it's kind of hard to stop him. I'm one Raps fan that would welcome that trade with open arms, but Derozan could still develop into a pretty good player. Not all-star level, but close

Using the amnesty on an 18 mil expiring contract means 1 of two things to me atm its either we're setting up for some big moves on the horizon or we're committed to the youth movement. Either way atm its kinda confusing what we're doing.

True, but the amnesty can only be applied one time and it has to pertain to a contract that was signed under the old CBA. Philly doesn't have any old contracts that are worth amnesty-ing(?) other than Brand so they may as well use it while they can. This is a year for them to take the next step, so $18million is a LOT of money to get some great talent.

No your an idiot, Philly is young and wants to compete NOW by clearing 18 million in cap space they can afford to bring in some help and possibly make a bigger move. There is nobody on their team for the foreseeable future who would need to be amnestied so no sorry your incorrect.

I don't think he'll go to the bobcats lol. At this point in his career he'll take the vet min. and go to a contender. He made more than enough from the Sixers.

Am I overreacting?

I honestly don't understand why it is acceptable to post in an amnestied player thread before learning the amnesty rules.

Seriously?

How do people still not understand the amnesty/waiver process?

You have to think about it like this, the sixers amnestied brand because 1) he's not the impact player he used to be. 2) they need their young guys to get more playing time to develop more. 3) financial reasons. For those of you saying, " oh they're so dumb for not trading his expiring contract or letting his contract expire" have to realize the other roster decisions the sixers are faced with. They needed to sign a scorer off of the bench but did not want to overpay for the likes of lou Williams, who was realistically one of their only options with brand on the books. Lou Williams is not who the sixers want to invest in long term because he would take up around 5years, 40 mill And he plays no D and he's only a high level bench player. At this point, They want to utilize their cap space more efficiently so they could potential add a big name free agent to their roster in the next few years. So basically, would you rather have Lou Williams and Elton brand contracts on the books combined for 6 years and 58 mill or would you rather have Nick young for 1 year, 6 mill and have cap room this year and not be in financial uncertainty in the future

He doesn't have a choice. If the Bobcats get him, then he has to go there.

Elton Brand is nothing more than a 20-25 minute big man off the bench, people can't get caught up with his big name.

The sad part is that he'll still get paid $18M either way. Must be nice.

this is what people do not understand...Nobody would make a trade for a guy who is a bench player that cant jump and is on the chain for 18 mill

Hopefully He goes to the Knicks.

In what world does he help the Knicks? That's why nobody takes you people serious, because you want everyone who was a name 10 years ago.

This is fawked. It was an expiring contract. I'm sure Dallas would have taken him in a trade considering it is an expiring contract. And they could have gotten a trade exception. I don't understand this move.

18 million reasons why Dallas would not have traded for him...Do you think the sixers would just ate 18 million wiithout checking around?

Please check the amnesty rules.

I cannot fathom how little all you guys know about basketball and yet expect us to respect your opinions in an NBA forum.

And I'm not singling you out, there are at least 30 posters in this thread that are clueless about the process or anything outside of NBA2k.

Elton Brand cant choose where he wants to play.

With the new CBA rules. When a player gets amnestied. Only teams that are under the salary cap, have first dibs on Elton Brand. the team the places the highest bid gets him. Elton wont slip past the lottery teams and end up in MIA or NYK.

He's still a nice defender and rebounder. Will be a solid pickup.

Somebody will get a really good first big off the bench or a good 5th starter. But don't rely on him as your 2nd or 3rd option.
