As of right now, I think he's still planning on participating. I also think he's technically not out of the All Star Game either? I remember hearing the only hope he would have to play is if he came back from injury before. Either way, it's probably best for Kemp and the team if he just sat both events out.

Maybe he doesn't want people confused with him and the Formers Yankees pitcher Mike Stanton who was linked to using PED

i love beltran don't get me wrong and not just because wainwright struck him out in game 7 of the 2006 NLCS to end the game lol, but he's still a bit fragile and the last thing this Cardinal team needs is for Beltran to hurt himself over swinging in an overrated contest like the home run derby. PLEASE DONT HURT YOURSELF CARLOS!!

yea beltran will probably be like when Garrett Anderson won the derby in 2005. Swear every home run he hit maybe only went 5-10 rows deep. Dont get me wrong beltran has hit some bombs this year and has more power than Garrett had but a nice easy swing just to get the job done is fine with me.

What kind of show does Beltran put on in BP? That's what the derby is, a glorified batting practice.

Yeah Beltran has a nice swing. It's very smooth and hardly looks like he tries to hit homers

Can't wait to see Voltron and Stanton. Beltran has slightly more power from the right side, but his swing from the left side is a thing of beauty. I figure it's probably easier to find a RH guy to throw to him.

The HR Derby has never been about strictly taking the 8 best power hitters in baseball. It's an exhibition show...nothing more, nothing less.

Rickie Weeks hit 20 homers last season and was in it.

Vernon Wells, Chris Young, Corey Hart in 2010.

Nelson Cruz and Joe Mauer in 2009'

Sizemore, Utley, etc. in 2008.

Let's not act like Cutch is the first slightly-above-average home run hitter to make it. It's an exhibition, he'll put on a show, period.

Dude has been a top 3-4 player in baseball this year. Why are you upset he's here?

Wake me up when McCutchen hits 500+ foot bombs like Harper has in the past. The HR derby is usually all about raw power, except when Tejada and Abreu were in it and hit a bunch of 400-420 foot HR's, making it extremely boring to watch. Nobody cares for a ball that clears the fence by 5-10 feet. They want to see moonshots.

ManRam
07-08-2012, 01:36 PM
I don't know where my post went...hmm...

Anyhow, pardon my homerness + slight drunkenness last night.

I'm happy for him. No die hard MLB fan doesn't know who he is or how great he is. But the casual fans seem to be lagging a bit. There is no better casual fan draw than the HR Derby, so I'm happy for him. He really wanted it too.

Sure, I'd rather see Braun or maybe Jay Bruce in there as a neutral fan. But after that, who else is really more deserving. Those are the only guys who have hit more than him...

Corey Hart, Pence, Desmond and PEDRO have all hit just as many...are any of those really better options. I'd argue that Alvarez is the only significantly better true power hitter and he shouldn't be going to these things yet. The 15 HR hitters included Soriano, LaRoche and Kubel. No, no and no thanks to those three. Then we have Votto, Holliday, Heyward and some other lighter hitting guys. I think any of those three would be cool, though Holliday has done it before and never really impressed.

I get why some are bummed. Hopefully he can put on a show like he does every single game. Though, hitting huge home runs is certainly not is M.O.

Oh well, I'm excited, and that's all that truly matters ;)

Just one clip, there are a million more. Sure, some barely clear the wall, but he's hit some BOMBS in his career. If you watch him hit BP, you'll see he can do it.

No player has hit more homers than him since May 8th. His longest HR this season is 446, which is longer than anything Beltran or Braun have hit (league leaders).

Again, I get that people want moonshots. I just want a show. Can he do that? We'll see....but watching him every day and seeing how he can hit BP, I think he can.

We'll see. Hopefully his selection doesn't ruin the entire thing for you all ;)

I personally think Pedro Alvarez would have been a good pick (more no doubt home runs this year than anyone else in baseball), but not a ton of distance either (because he pulls the ball every time)

So pretty much you guys are all hating on Cutch because he plays for the Pirates, earning no national exposure... Had he been in NY or Boston, he'd be your hero... Kinda reminds me of Bautista when he became one of the best players in the league, for the 1st year or so, no one cared because he played (and still plays) for the Blue Jays :)

Give Cutch a break, had he been on the Phillies/Marlins/Nationals/Dodgers/Cardinals... He'd be in discussion for MVP.

Uh, you forgot about the guy tied for the major league lead in WAR, David Wright.

I didn't forget Wright.

I thought about him when I wrote that.

But he isn't on par with Cutch or Votto.

Votto is easily the best hitter, but is playing first.

Cutch is behind Votto offensively, but he is playing center. His positional adjustment makes them basically equal, or close to it.

David Wright is behind both offensively, and he plays third, which is ahead of first on the spectrum, but behind center.

He is behind Cutch right now, who is basically tied with Votto.

He is a good third place candidate with Carlos Ruiz.

Center is above third on the defensive spectrum, in case you don't know.

And both are out-hitting Wright.

Votto - .451 wOBA, 186 wRC+
Cutch - .429 wOBA, 174 wRC+
Wright - .421 wOBA, 170 wRC+

Votto is easily out hitting Wright. By a good margin, positional adjustment or not, that's too large of a difference.
And Cutch is out hitting Wright despite playing the harder defensive position.

The only reason that Cutch is down on WAR is because his defensive UZR is ****, and I don't know how much stock you can put in that over 3 months. I don't like WAR in such a small sample size personally.

And the difference between Wright and McCutchen is that Wright is better defensively at his position. You could stick Wright at SS if you want to ignore defense and just get the positional adjustment.

Despite that Wright has been horrible defensively for three years running and is just now a positive defender? UZR in 3 months is pretty well worthless, and he could not play shortstop at a league average rate, no way. We'll see how he looks at the end of the year when the MVP discussion gets going.

Despite that Wright has been horrible defensively for three years running and is just now a positive defender? UZR in 3 months is pretty well worthless, and he could not play shortstop at a league average rate, no way. We'll see how he looks at the end of the year when the MVP discussion gets going.

Here's a quote from last November in the MLB re-draft forum:

David Wright said after coming off the DL this year that his range has suffered from packing on extra pounds of muscle to compensate for the huge ballpark. We'll see what happens this year now that Citi Field is still a pitcher's park, but not Yellowstone.

Total zone has Wright at +7 runs so far this year as well. If you watched him on a daily basis, it would be obvious to you that he is much, much better defensively this year than he has been the past 3. At some point, people need to admit they were wrong about the decline of David Wright and give the massive dimensions more credit for his struggles of the past.

Goldschmidt would have been perfect for this

Really? This is the HR Derby... I want to see the stars in there.

I think Goldie is a star in the making

.385 wOBA, 138 wRC+ this year, arguably should be an all-star on his own right.

Career .232 ISO, he has massive power

K, put him in when he does become a big name star, but not now.

You don't have to be a star to hit massive home runs and belong in the home run derby.

K, but if they want ratings, the casual fan isn't going to tune in to watch a guy he's never heard of before.

Josh Hamilton really made an outbreak because of the Home Run Derby. Before that he was a guy with character issues trying to get back on track.

Well Josh Hamilton was actually an All-Star that year...

I really don't want an argument over the merits of having Paul Goldschmidt in the Hr derby... put him in there w/e.

In all honesty, I'd rather it be the top 4 or 5 in HR from each league, wether they were selected or not, compete in the HR Derby and the only way you can get out of it is if you have a legitimate injury.

This year would be
Jose Bautista
Josh Hamilton
Adam Dunn
Curtis Granderson

Ryan Braun
Carlos Beltran
Giancarlo Stanton
Jay Bruce

And then replace Stanton with the next guy in line, Carlos Gonzalez

Both McCuth and Fielder are starting to hit homer's on a rapid pace, going to be a fun HRD. Not only does McCuth deserve to be in the HDR he is top 3 in MVP race imo.
