I'm a Jays fan and he's my favourite pitcher of all-time, so I'm excited on a personal level. On a fan level, I'm not sure he'll be able to handle the AL East.

But at the same time, our pitching is pathetic right now because of injuries and he can't be worse than Jesse Chavez.

Hope they move him into a long reliever, I think he would be more effective, and possibly pitch again next season.

I don't see this mattering at all, even with the Jays injuries to the rotation.

Seriously..there is no one with upside they can call up or sign? I never understood moves like this.

Oh ****.

He also played for Texas and St. Louis (Moyer played for the Cards) and Colorado (Moyer again).

Oliver didn't pitch in the 80's though

He never did play with Moyer or Vizquel before though

Vizquel faced Oliver 32 times (2 for 27 with 2 singles and 4 walks). .293 OPS

He is like carrying another pitching coach, they don't have anyone that is really ready or has earned a call-up. It's nothing more than a depth move. If he pitches well enough in AAA for them, he might be able to eat some innings instead of giving it to someone who isn't really ready yet.

You aren't hurting anything by getting Moyer. It's a no risk, possible some upside deal. It's a good thing to do, especially if you are weak on pitching.

What's wrong with giving Moyer a chance? Sure, he's still very raw, but he's worth taking a shot for in my opinion. This kid just needs one chance to show what he can do. Great signing.

Blue Jays (3.6 UZR/150) and Rogers Centre are a good spot for Moyer. Big upgrade over Rockies (-7.1 UZR/150) and Coors Field.

It's amazing these kids at AAA can't touch Moyer. He was mowing them down.

Amazing that he's still willing to go pitch in AAA. He's really just a baseball junkie I suppose. I think it's pretty easy to say if I was in his shoes and had accomplished what he has I'd walk away quite easily.

Anyone see what he did for the O's in AAA? I'd say he earned another chance.

Don't forget Darren Oliver. Toronto is turning into Florida... a retirement destination.

yup, 4 starters of our opening day rotation within 2 weeks

Reports are saying Alvarez will not miss his next start.

If Alvarez goes down, the Jays will be down 4 of their 5 starters from opening day. In essence, it is Ricky Romero plus scrubs going forward...

To be fair, Hutchison wasn't in the opening day rotation. He joined shortly after because Carreno (sp?) sucked.

Carreno wasn't in the opening day rotation either, IIRC. He made the third start of the season, but he was called up for just that one start and then immediately sent back down after it.

They went with a 4 man rotation out of spring training because of off-days in the schedule it could work until late in April, at which point they called up Hutchison to fill the 5th spot.

Not making a legitimate competitive bid for Yu Darvish sure looks good now......

When he left the Orioles I figured this would happen with the injuries in Toronto's rotation

Why look at Rickey? Why not look at Franco? He played until 49, and loved baseball so much that even when the strike-shortened season ended, he signed in Japan to keep playing baseball for the remainder of the season!

Nah. He had a job in 2008 in Mexico, and then retired on his own volition. I guess 50 was good enough for him and his body really couldn't do it any longer.

Yeah. Just Rickey is a neat story too. Nobody wanted him, he goes to independent league, and then the Dodgers sign him after he played great.

I'd say it makes no sense, but if Alvarz is injured they are down 4 starters (5 if you count McGowan). They only have so many bodies in the minors.

Needed an arm, and I'm sure he'll be a good influence on one of the game's yongest staffs, but damn I can't imagine him pitching in Fenway or Yankee Stadium right now...

According to Shi Davidi of sporstnet.ca Moyer's contract consists of two starts, and then the club must decide weather to promote him or not.

It's so pathetic that winning the division is only ever mentioned by Ricky Romero and JP Arencibia. Winning a chance to play a 1 game road playoff game for the chance to play in the ALDS is the best we can hope for. No one else around the team at any level, from management to fans, seems to even consider winning the division as a possibility...ever.

Don't get this at all.....3rd team in 2 months, terrible after he faces each batter once....is this just to be nice or what?

I'd rather develop a young guy and have him do the same or slightly worse.....at least he would be getting experience.

Did you see what he did in Baltimore for their AAA squad?

He requested his release because they were not calling him up, and TOR has a greater need for him than BAL did.

His new deal requires a call-up after two minor league starts or to get another release so he can find another option.

It isn't like he is sucking it up or anything. He is still a capable big league pitcher who isn't ready to let go. Good for him.

He would be better out of the pen with extended mop starts or as an pen innings eater if a starter gets hurt in a start or gets shelled early.

Yeah I don't think people understand...the Jays are down to their 9th and 10th starters. We lost 3/5 of our rotation in 4 days and another starter got hurt the other day but will make his next start anyway. We've got pitching depth but no team can go into double digits in terms of starters.
