Yes, it has come to this...

Still waiting on the extent of Alvarez' injury.

BOSTON -- Henderson Alvarez was forced to depart during the sixth inning of Monday night's game in Boston because of soreness in his right elbow.

Alvarez is the fourth Blue Jays starting pitcher to leave with an injury during the past two weeks. The club said the move was made for precautionary reasons and the extent of the injury wasn't clear.

Toronto has already lost right-handers Brandon Morrow, Kyle Drabek and Drew Hutchison to the 15-day disabled list. Drabek is out for the year because of Tommy John surgery, while Morrow and Hutchison are both expected to miss an extended period of time.

Prior to the start of the sixth inning, Alvarez had a lengthy conversation with catcher J.P. Arencibia after just one warmup pitch was thrown. Alvarez continued on, but then called for trainer George Poulis and manager John Farrell three pitches into the frame.

Alvarez also previously called for Poulis and Farrell during the third inning, but it wasn't clear whether the two incidents were related. Toronto's second-year right-hander departed after having surrendered five runs -- three earned -- on six hits while striking out two.

Toronto's lone starter that has yet to go down with an injury this season is ace left-hander Ricky Romero. The Blue Jays have already inserted Brett Cecil, Jesse Chavez and Aaron Laffey into the rotation, and they are quickly running out of options at the big league level.

Alvarez entered Monday's game with a 3-6 record and 4.30 ERA in 14 starts. He has struck out 27 and walked 20 during his 90 innings of work this season.

Our rotation is unbelievably screwed for this year and possibly next if we don't start acquiring more good starting pitching.

I seriously don't think this "maple boner" thing actually exists. If it did, then clearly someone on this forum would be in support of calling up Richmond.

The heavy odds are on Villanueva starting and Richmond basically being an emergency long reliever, no? If Jenkins isn't ready then there's no reason to call him up.

According to Wilner they don't need another starter till Saturday, meaning Jenkins could still be that guy. Still seems weird to me to have to make room on the 40 man for a scrub like Richmond for just 5 games.

Brandon Morrow ‏@2Morrow23
Played catch today and felt very good, no timetable for return but everything is positive so far

Alvarez going for an MRI in Florida tomorrow. Farrell doesn't believe it's serious, but the #Bluejays want to get it checked out. #Jays

Arash Madani ‏@ArashMadani
Farrell says the Alvarez issue is not the ligament area, but the "inner forearm." The MRI will reveal more. #Bluejays #Jays

I don't know why everyone's penciling Richmond into the rotation. If he was up to start he'd have been called up the night before his start, not hopping a red-eye to Boston last night. He's just the next in line to take the lumps when a starter inevitably gets chased early in a game.

Exactly. Many here were whining when the rotation was intact, the Jays were 6 or 7 games over .500 and a couple of games out of first. I've got nothing against criticizing the Jays when it's called for, but *****ing about anything and everything gets old quick.

Didn't the Jays say the same thing about Santos when he went down that it wasnt going to be anything super serious. And Morrow...hmm and McGowan?

Yep, Jays are screwed (and even if Alvarez is back, he's not pitching any better than Jesse Chavez at this point)

Sanyo
06-26-2012, 01:47 PM
Ps- I really do want the Jays to do well...seriously but you have to be realistic with a rotation like that. May get lucky like they have been so far but the bats have definitely bailed them out a ton lately and we know how cold those bats can turn all of a sudden...
