Tony Campana

Will be Billy Hamilton when he gets called up

TrueYankee

Gardner is an honorable mention, but not the fastest. Small white man Gardner!

Jeffy25

And it depends what you are asking.

Do things like hitting triples and stealing bases make somebody a 'fast baseball player' since those are things that we attribute to speed. But just because you do those things doesn't mean you are fast. Yadi Molina has how many stolen bases already?

The fastest guy in baseball right now to first base is Tony Campana though, in terms of getting to full speed quickly and being a good sprinter.

Tony Campana but, my god I can't wait to see Billy Hamilton. Dee Gordon is another trail blazer.

billy hamilton High A SS for the Reds....87 SB's in 69 games!! he's hitting .332 as well

he may steal 150 bases this year lol

He also has very little power.

In the end, I expect him to have a decent average in the MLB, with little walks and little power. A lot of those doubles and triples have been him feasting off of minor league mistakes. Singles into doubles, type of thing.

In the MLB, teams will challenge him. All the time.

I think he'll have some decent value but I'm not exactly the highest on Hamilton.

Also, to answer the question, currently, it's Tony Campana and it's not really close.

Jeffy25
06-24-2012, 05:45 PM
Did you know....

That Billy Hamilton has stolen 5 bases this year on pitch outs.

He is very fast, and his higher OBP helps him greatly.

He could be the first 100 stolen base guy in the big leagues since Coleman in 87.

Jose Constanza, he sucks and isn't on the roster right now but when he is up with the Braves he makes Bourn look slow.

What type of speed are we talking about? pure base stealing speed? home to first speed? first to third speed? triple speed? 40 yd dash? 100m? 200m? 400m? many guys have short bursts of speed that are unmatched but can be beaten on triples by guys with long strides gaining momentum

Dexter Fowler is a good example, only slightly above average at stealing bases, but in a very elite category of legging out triples

If the question is 'who is carrying an 80 speed tool?'

There are a lot of guys actually, Campana, Trout, etc etc.

I would think Campana probably leads the bunch though.

Dee gordan was clocked at 3.79 from the left side to first.

Mike trout was clocked at 3.53 from the right side to first.

Tony has been clocked at 3.6 on a batted ball and 3.3 on a bunt to first.

After watching a ton of video on these guys, I still can't definitively say who the fastest player is. Hamilton may steal a ton of bases, but I really don't think its because he is the fastest player around. Think he has the quickest first step and takes only about two steps to reach top speed. I love me some Michael Bourn and the way he runs, but dont think he is comparable to Campana.

Quintin Berry is ****ing fast. He has stolen 11 bases since getting called up and hasn't been caught yet. If anyone can get some stats on him that would be great. He has been doing decent for the Tigers

As far as speed in the OF,... Matt Kemp can catch fly balls in foul territory coming from CF.

I would probably not include Matt Kemp on the list. He steals a lot of bases and gets to a lot of balls in CF because of the jumps he gets and how smart of a baserunner he is. I also agree Ellsbury is up there when he is up there.

Other guys i would add are Tony Campana, Michael Bourn, Brett Gardner, Jose Reyes, and Emilio Bonafacio.

Cameron Maybin and Carlos Gomez are both pretty fast as well.. all of those guys just came off of the top of my head.

Fastest not fittest !

I'm intrigued by Hamilton. Just hope he doesn't turn into just another slap happy
Juan Pierre and struggle to get on base.

Campana and Gordon are fast little jittter bugs but I really like the powerful running style of a Bourn or Trout.
As a Jays fan I get to watch Rasmus patrol CF and the fluidity and speed at which he covers the gaps is astonishing. Maybe doesn't transfer as well to just tagging bags but in terms of baseball speed he has saved the Jays a lot of runs this year.

Clay Buchholz.
Reportedly he was clearly faster than Ellsbury when they were coming up together thru the minor leagues. Fastest guy in Boston's entire minor league system for several seasons...except he was a pitcher.
Out of HS, he was recruited as a 6'3" WR by Texas Tech Coach Mike Leach, among others.

Same here Campana looked really normal running there..

When I watch Mike Trout run it reminds me of Bo Jackson - Rickey Henderson type speed. Just flat out explosive..

For me its Trout and Dee Gordon neck and neck. Peter Bourjos also maybe the fastest 1st to third

Mike trout was clocked at 3.53 from the right side to first.

You guys realize there is a lot to base stealing besides just being fast right? Moderately fast guys can still be great base stealers.. Picking the right pitch to go and getting a good jump / lead is the key not just pure speed.

Yadi Molina has 7 stolen bases this year and 28 over the last 4 seasons thus far.

Not gonna watch him, he is going to just take second.

How fast was Herb Washington? How horrible was he at running the bases?

By that logic, than Tyler Greene is fast too.

24 steals. His only 2 times he has been caught have both been on suicide squeezes where he was forced home and the guy bunting didn't touch the pitch.

He isn't as fast as Emilio, you just can't use stolen bases as a measure.

Exactly. Deon Sanders could very well be the fastest man to EVER play baseball. Yet his caught stealing percentage was pretty terrible. Just A little over 33%

idk why the Reds are so hesitant to send him up to AA. unless they plan on keeping him in single A for a while and calling him right up to Triple A.

i honestly wouldn't be surprised if they move him to CF though. i thought they would move him to 2B but then they resigned Phillips and Cozart is doing good at SS now. unless they let Rolen go this offseason and move Cozart to 3B which is a possibility.

i don't even know if the Reds know what they want to do with Hamilton.

I dont disagree that guys like trout are explosive on the basebaths. But if were answering the question, I think Rajai Davis would eat trout in a 100 yard dash. Rajai doesnt run the basebath, he blinks in and out of reality until he touches the plate.

Yep his arms dont glide parallel to his body. Its more like they curve inwards with each stride. Anyways Im not complaining. When we picked up rajai, we thought he was only good on the basepaths. Hes quickly turning into a multi tool player.

I think Carlos Gomez deserves a little more love than he's getting. I also think it depends on speed though too. While Gomez does have a quick first step, he may be a hair slower than guys like Campana, but if you're comparing speed in a longer distance, I think Gomez takes it.

He's a perfect example of a guy who's running fast that doesn't seem to run fast. He's surpisingly tall at 6'3", so his strides are longer than other guys but he sure covers a ton of ground when he's running.
