Sounds like it will be the O'Malley family possibly.

Sell should exceed 800 million, but the ownership change can't be official until the next ownership meeting, which is scheduled for August.

Why the hell would someone pay $800 million for the Padres? They have a nice ballpark but the fanbase is terrible.

Not all bad. They have a solid tv deal in the making worth about that 800 million, not to mention their revenue has to be at a high percentage of that revenue mark already.

It's a great investment if you have the cash and are political enough that the other 29 baseball owners will want you in their 'club'.

And considering what the Dodgers went for (obviously less of a brand name and fan appeal) this is pretty damn cheap.

Edit: Asked & Answered :)

Yeah it certainly doesn't have to do with attendance, they are 22nd this year and were only 17th last year.

But it all has to do with the revenue in relation to cost of operations, the Pirates make a **** ton of money that way.

Keep your operation costs down, and the rest of it is profit.

Mega tv deals are what's driving these franchises prices way up though before anything else.

Hopefully this pushes this team in the right direction.

I haven't followed this in several weeks, is the O'Malley group the one that includes Gwynn and Mickelson? Either way hopefully they can attempt to create some consistency in San Diego.

Edit: this link explains it better, Gwynn said he is not, but I guess Mickelson ishttp://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/jun/22/two-groups-emerge-padres-bidding/

Sell of the Padres?

They've got alot of things going for them like SD being a cool town and that park being awesome (and taking care of their pitching). I would prefer them being a power in the west than the Not Brooklyn Dodgers.
