Let me open up with saying I'm a Lakers fan, so I don't really have anything invested in the current NBA Finals.

But I was curious, why does the NBA playoffs switch from a 2-2-1-1-1 format to a 2-3-2 finals format?? It seems like it penalizes the higher ceded team.

I think we've discussed this.. I'm not taking anything away from Miami or Dallas or other champions, but I feel that the team that earned HCA should have game 5 at home always... screw the media complaints.. Game 5 is pivotal to any series. Either a team puts the other on the brink of elimination, puts pressure on the leading team (If they were down 3-1 and make it 3-2) or eliminates the team. This should always be in the team with HCA. Last year, G.5 should have been in MIA, I guess this is a little redemption lol

I like it for the higher seeded team:

- If they win the first two at home, worst case scenario is they get to play Game 6 and 7 at home.

- And if they lose either game 1 or 2, in my opinion if they lose three games in a row they aren't deserving of being NBA Champions.

How about the higher seed chooses whether they want to be at home for the first two and last two, or the middle three?

If you're confident you can steal one of the first two on the road, maybe you would want the three consecutive home games. Split the first two, then take two of three at home, and you still have two chances to win the series on the road.

It changed because of the Lakers/Celtics series in the 80's. Media and the league didnt like all the travel from the west coast to the east coast so many time if the finals went a complete 7 games. With the 2-3-2 format, you're only traveling 3 times, and with the 2-2-1-1-1 format you're traveling 5 times in a 7 game series.
